Broke 100, now bring on 90

Recommended Posts

Passages.  They are the principle component of recreational golf.

Consistently breaking 100 is a major passage as it brings you directly into a huge community of recreational players who never get too far beyond that.

One may play fifty years and not get by that, or one can become a single digit player or better.

Either way, we're playing golf.

Everyone should have such problems.

Realized I am still over rotating, even doing the NTC drills. Tired to rectify that this morning.

I don’t see any of the NTC drills in this video.

in pic 1 there’s no wrist set which is the very first drill/move in NTC and pretty much all of Monte’s teaching. Your chest and arms get disconnected early the takeaway and the club is way outside the ball. It appears more of an arm lift.

This ends up with almost a false turn at the top(pic2). Things looks good in a pic or video here but in NTC the right hip should have moved back slightly…not a bad position tho

in pic three and four you didn’t do cast A. You pushed your right shoulder and hands back. Not a bad move this is some that AMG uses as a feel for shallowing. If you were doing cast your right arm would have straightened out and you would have had a lot more wrist bending back in the right hand and more  bow in the left wrist.

The move in pic 4 helps get the shaft a little shallower than what you posted the other day on the range as we can see in pic 5, it’s not quite bisecting the right forearm but because of how you got to the top and to lead arm parallel in the downswing your right elbow is even or slightly behind the seam of your shirt so and not a lot of left hip going back and out to clear out so you are in what many refer to as stuck and will have to compensate to get the club square to the ball. It’s hard to see in pic 5 but the face is toe up where at this point in the swing it should be more matching your spine angle. In pic 5 hips should be open lens already and the shoulders square. Both your hips and shoulders are square to the target line. You really can’t rotate at this point or you would miss the ball or swipe way across it. As we get into impact in pic 6 you can see the club coming a little outside the ball instead of from the inside.

You have put in some good work but when you think you are doing something too much you overdo the correction or vice versa.

My suggestion is if NTC is the route you are going for swing technique. Film yourself probably in selfie mode doing backswing A drill. Start with just the wrist hinge and flexing if the wrist. Get that feeling. Then from there work on the move of pushing the hands to 7 o’clock. Then work on combing those movements. Up to this point that is the most important aspect of the swing.l because in reality it’s half way over at that point. There’s barely over .25 seconds left in the swing to impact from this point.

Thanks. I have mainly been trying just to backswing A for now trying to get that better. Yes there are no drills here. The pic I posted was the backswing A position in hopes I was close. In NTC the wrist set happens with the no turn. The set you are talking about is in efficient swing.

Correct the wrist set is of backswing A where in efficient swing it’s a separate drill and also a different way of setting the wrist. If you watch the backswing A drill Monte breaks it down into wrist set, then turning the wrist then the push to 7 o’clock at the start of the video. Which then becomes a single movement. My suggestion is to segment your practice into those 3 steps. Work the feel of setting the wrist. Then set and rotate them a bunch of times after setting them. This turns into set and rotate of wrist movement. It teaches your wrist how to move. Then once you have done that blend in the push to 7 o’clock and drill that over and over. You have to teach your body new movement patterns and you can’t do that at full speed.

More NTC work. Needing lots of work. I can almost get wrists right but loose it. Need to rinse and repeat more. I need to get my left shoulder drop gone in transition. I think when I can start to focus on cast A and turning I’ll be able to not drop my shoulder. Tried to also look at the club staring a little farther away and the sole of the club was flush even though, IMO, the down the line angles look better

Some good progress in these videos. Keep working this and youll start seeing them blend in better.

Couple things that stand out.

You use more arm lift than wrist hinge. Compare how far away your elbows are from your body compared to Monte’s. Last pic attached

in the second pic you are in a better position but then in the third pic you had pushed your hands further away from you before starting the push to 7.

The other thing is you are leaving out the second part of the wrist movement from backswing a which is to turn the left wrist to flatten it. Cupped left wrist in the last pic of your swing. To make sure the left hand is in the base of the fingers so it can hinge properly

Thanks. Actually did break 95. After I broke 200 my next round I shot a 92 that should have been an 88 if I didn’t blow up on 16 and 18

But you’ve obviously minimized the blowups during the round. 2 out of the last 3 holes is frustrating but you put together a fantastic round outside of that.

Minimizing the double bogeys is huge. Whatever you have to do to get those to no more than 1bogey every 9 holes will help you substantially from a scoring factor. Big thing is to make sure your game is consistent no matter what your handicap is. Many golfers have a lower handicap but shoot roughly the same score because of compounding errors no matter what the slope is, I.e putting or driving errors that occur no matter the course difficulty. Keep grinding!

why? aside from a huge gap at the top of the bag, you’ve got really consistent gapping all the way through.

That’s my thinking. Got the super since I struggled with my EF SZ 3w. I can get this off the tee 230-240 but the deck is hit and miss. Any suggestions?

As @Chip Strokes said, 4 wood. Or maybe even a 5 wood, but depends how you hit a 5 wood, may be similar distance to the Super Hybrid.

Drop one of the hybrids. Check the lofts on all your irons and wedges. Find a fitter or someone who knows how to use a launch monitor as well. Since the distance measuring devices only account for total distance something isn’t right with the clubs. Either lofts are off or something with ball flight is.

Get fit for a club that you can hit off the deck. Take lessons to fix the swing

So I used to have an aetoburner 3w that I was told was too spiny for me. I did like how it generated speed. 5w was a beast for me. I have a chance to get a HL 3w TP version. Would something this old still be legitimate to use and go after?

Fairway woods seem to be an interesting club since people tend to hold on to them for long periods of time and they are often the oldest club in the bag.  As with any club it comes down to how well you hit it and does it fit in the bag from a distance perspective.  I don’t personally think there is anything wrong with older clubs.

The hl is going to be higher lofted than the 3w. It’s still going to spin alot even with the tp version

Trying to something in a blind buy may just continue to lead to not finding a club that works. I think something like a 3hl is a good option as is a 4w because of the added loft is easier to get airborne and play off the deck.

What you should do is find a fitter that does gapping session. They can look at the numbers with your current bag. They can see if it’s loft issue, launch characteristics and/or swing and find solutions to adjust your setup or find a club that fits in

I have an M2 3HL at 16.5 deg but it only goes about 10 yards farther than my 17 deg 2h but with the greater number of mishits and struggles off the deck, it didn't help my scores. I previously had a 17 deg 4 wood and a 19 deg 5-6 wood, again were very similar to my 2H distance with more mishits.

My 2H has a taller face than fairways and a shorter shaft. I still haven't seen a fairway to displace it and am looking to test a new Epic Super Duper hybrid to see if I could get similar performance/forgiveness but pickup 10 yards or so compared to my 11 year old hybrid.

If you hit your driver 270 and your hybrid 230-240, you might be able to get a 3 out to 250. This will only happen off the tee and the difference will shrink off the ground. I don't think a bag change is needed unless the Super hybrid is not working as a 3 wood will be more difficult to play.

When considering this area of the bag, are you comfortable hitting into greens from this distance? Or are you more likely to hit the ball far offline or into traps... You're likely only carrying the 3 wood about 220 and then needing to roll a ball into a narrow opening between hazards. Is your sand game and greenside chipping good enough to take this on or is a shot 20-50 yards short of the green going to work better. I am very hesitant to hit into a green beyond 200 yards as that is my longest iron or first hybrid. Unless there are no penalty areas on either side of the green.

I agree with all you have said. I am comfortable from about 220 out but most of the times I am short. The super is a great tee club for me. Off the deck is lacking, probably due to practice needed. It took me a while to really gel with my sub70 3H but now I can trust it mostly. My sand game is pretty good. Better than my 20-50 pitch game. In that scenario I would prefer to play a bump and run.

I am tempted after seeing my data and after hitting an epic speed 3W at DGS. Although, my carry numbers there weren't stellar either. Thinking a slightly high loft would help. Maybe i should try setting my Super back to 17* and seeing if a little more spin can help me carry better.  I guess another option could be a mini driver as a back up tee club and go Driver/Mini/3H.

I am skeptical of the Mini Drivers, but it is worth a test. I see them as less flexible 3W alternatives with less forgiveness than a driver. The dispersion is unlikely to be significantly smaller than a driver where you would use it as a "safe" club off the tee. It would only be where the extra 10-20 yards with driver brings in extra hazards you want to stay short of but in that case the 2H meets the need but only gives up another 10-20 yards.

In my fairway woods I always go 16.5/17-17.5. I have never got along with hybrids that’s are lower than 19*. I also like the ball flight if the fw over low degree hybrid. If I’m not tinkering with clubs in this bag I do a fitting with one of the club brands to find a setup that fits the gap I need after the hybrid that replaces my longest iron

instead of all of this guesswork, why not to do a fairway/hybrid fitting to see what you can consistently hit the correct distance to fill that gap?

the fitting will be a lot cheaper and faster than buying 2 or 3 or 4 clubs that don’t work.

I have played several mini drivers since 2015 when I was mid to almost high cap. The mini driver is a good alternative even for someone who doesn’t swing driver well. The shorter shaft and higher loft help off the tee. For some the design can help reduce spin and keep the ball in play.

I have a buddy who hovers around 12-14 cap who still plays the callaway one from 2015 and loves it as an alternative late in the round when fatigue sets in
