instead of all of this guesswork, why not to do a fairway/hybrid fitting to see what you can consistently hit the correct distance to fill that gap?

the fitting will be a lot cheaper and faster than buying 2 or 3 or 4 clubs that don’t work.

I did kinda this summer. Said I just need to practice more and work on my swing and that my setup is fine. There is truth to that and I am working on it.

Going to do super work along with fit for golf. Looking for some serious gains so I can take less club into greens and from the tee on short or strategic par fours.

Hopeful that my increased speed, fitness and swing work helps me be more consistent next season.

Make sure you have some sort of radar to track your swing speed and log the progress so you know what works and what doesn't.

Start of the season goal is being breaking 90. First round was 105. Good start. A month into lessons. Will see if that can get me anywhere this year. I expect higher scores initially and maybe an improvement. Real gains should be near end of year to next year.

I like the new position at the top.  Keep it up!  Slow swings work.

My one comment is to focus on starting the downswing by moving the arms first; they should start before your body rotates.  I see your arms and body turning turning as one.  When you speed up your swing, the arms will lag behind, causing early extension and OTT.

I fully expect you will be breaking 90 routinely by mid-summer; that's assuming your short game is solid.

ya, once i nail this position and start seeing balls flying, i hope my sequencing starts to get better. Jayson has been great so far as a coach and feel he will really help me improve. Its nice to have guidance. I already feel the shaft naturally shallowing. Will just need to trust it with the more work i put in.

Worked about and hour in my park on slow swings with iron and driver and then worked on speeding up. Realize I get to across the line when I back swing to aggressively, so for now I’ll be more moderate back and quick through. Need to focus more on pushing elbows together on downswing (feel to get the trail shoulder to externally rotate and shallow the club). Curious how things will look by my birthday round (end of May).

Three things I notice and wondering if your coach has talked to you about them.

I setup you aren’t stacked with knees, hips and ankles in one line and the back of you armpits aren’t really over the balls of your feet

You have no wrist set in the backswing until the top where the weight of the club does most of the work which is why you see the across the line and more cup in the lead wrist. (Think Monte’s initial move in the no turn cast videos)

It looks like your left hip moves forward that pushed the right hip back which is opposite of how the hips should move

He hasn't talked to me yet about these. He told me everything looks solid and then once I get my club in a good place at the top and work on external rotation of trail shoulder that he will give me some minor tweaks to work on path and club face.

You said he wants you to get the club in a better position. What drills or movements does he have you doing if it’s not based around wrist set and hip rotation?

Smart ball holds keeping my arms connected and remove a flying elbow. Elbow squeeze on down swing/right shoulder start down for Driver. He told me my turn was great and never commented on wrist position.

Smart ball holds keeping my arms connected and remove a flying elbow. Elbow squeeze on down swing/right shoulder start down for Driver. He told me my turn was great and never commented on wrist position.

matchup based instruction vs perfect swing cloning

I’m good with the matchup approach, most instructors look at that and will tell you there’s no perfect swing. All the top level instructors I’ve worked with in the recent past and that I follow for leaning the swing all have a window for what’s acceptable in the swing at each position.

If your coach is one of the guys that falls under Shauheen’s coaching which is very similar to GG, Larry Cheung and Dan Carraher style then it’s all matchup golf related and not a stock swing for each golfer. I’ve been following Shauheen for several years on social media

It’s an interesting approach he has you working on, if you are getting long and across the line and that based on previous picture of where you want to be he’s not working to get you into that position to make the transition part you are working on easier.

I fight the long and across the line in my swing and the last two instructors I worked with focused on wrist set and arm movement to get into a better position at the top. Them along with Monte and several others talk about how if in better position at the top the transition is almost going to happen naturally

Yes he is a disciple of Shauheen. Jayson Nickol. Same coach @GolfSpy MPR uses. So i did try some swings just to see with a set wrist, my club face is sky high at the top, and i already fight a pull/hook. Maybe that is why he hasn't addressed it yet? Who knows. I think what is going to take the longest is implementing this change at full speed. I did 5 slow swings then a couple full speed and its great at the top (with the wrist set), the transition shallow isn't there though, even with the elbow together thought. I am playing 18 tomorrow. Likely will take a club more and work on more controlled swings to not swing with too many bad habits.

Cool. Thanks for explaining what his approach is and what he has you working on. I’m always just curious about the swing itself and seeing how instructors work/think.

Thanks for the advice. I will keep that in mind. My iron SS is a little slower so my 4i gets me about 205, which is fine although that may improve with my swing fixes. It is refreshing when I see those distance numbers that I hit it farther than my handicap but then again score way lower than I supposedly should. In fact, yesterday I played .4i, 4i (drive got plugged sadly) to just in front of the green so I know that is manageable. I need to leave my ego at the door and know what is in my means. I may spring for full 6 months of foundations. Currently doing the month trial and those videos were already helpful. Getting Arccos soon so I can better track my game. Looking forward to gaining some understanding and improving my game.

ps you all are way nicer than the guys on wrx. I posed a question about leaving driver in the bag and some were not so nice. I love MGS.

just go slow....move up a set of tees......work on short game........I worked on my short game early in my golf adventure, never been a long hitter but with short game skills I was very competitive ......drive for show putt n chip for dough........old but true.......you are a bogie golfer , set your par at 1 over score card n work down from there......enjoy the game and let it come to you..............good luck n have fun

PA I've been playing for over 60 years and have moved up 3 sets of tees.......haha

I would say an ok round today. 102 (48/54) but that was being +8 the last four holes. Driver was a mess most the day and one bad hole was due to poor strategy after a bad drive. Only lost one ball but not ob. Likely plugged somewhere or buried under all the downed branches.

positives: no 3 putts, mostly solid short game (just one hole where it let me down), solid pitching game from 100 in ( one bad hole where things didn’t go well).

things to work on: driver and really anything of the tee,  only really hit two fairways and when I was in the rough my distance wasn’t there. Should come with swing improvements. When I didn’t take driver off the tee I only had two good balls. Long irons I was hooking them like crazy, no idea if offset or my grip. Keep ingraining swing feels. On the short irons things feel pretty good. Stick to a strategy. This killed me on one hole. 3H drive into a bunch of trees off the tee. Tried a hero shot and hit a tree instead of punching out. Then next shot over cooked a 7i and hit a tree. Ten fatted an 8i. Overall keeping composure and making the smart shot. Lastly is fitness. Although I am going FFG, I am gassed. I forgot my snack at home which didn’t help and this course had lots of elevation. This was my first walking 18 of the year and by the last three holes I was not in a good place.

Overall I’d call this a net positive and see spots to improve and keep growing this season.

Sounds like my game.  I've been playing for only 30 years, but I started at age 45.  For me... low scores come with how well my short game is working that day.

Have you ever tried teeing off with a 3wood instead of a driver, some people find them easier to hit than driver?

Don’t own one. Have a 17* Super hybrid turned down to 16. Hit it once from tee. Went only like 209 (not a good swing) but in fairway. Needed to hit 4i to try to get to green. That was hole #11.  I have been contemplating going back to a 3w or 4w.

Based upon your swing speed and driver distance you should be able to get it around 230 ish or so.

Chatted with my coach after working on feels yesterday. If I incorporate the NTC cast A (feeling letting the wrist flatten out) felt much better and videoed better. Here is a short of how that is looking. Excited to try to get this to the range.
