Salted Smart Insole

Today's feature article on the blog: https://mygolfspy.com/we-tried-it-salted-smart-insole/

I'm deeply intrigued by this, as I am by virtually all golf gadgets. Here's my question: do you guys believe that there is enough available information for someone like me (who avidly keeps up with developments in golf science) to use this data?

It's one thing to see the force patterns in my swing; it's another altogether to take that information, see where there are problems, and use that information to make corrections.

I think you could do it because you wouldn't just apply some random youtube video to fixes. You have enough knowledge that you could use it productively. Not the case with everyone.

All that being said as technology advances and things like this become more normal to golfers we get deep into the weeds on making the swing work and forget we have to learn how to play and score as well.

Had I not just spent some money on a putter and an Exputt simulator, I think this would have been on my list of things to buy this offseason. Connecting a visual to a feel would be really nice for me, as someone who struggles with obtaining the correct pressure shift and rotation in my backswing.

I almost bought them anyway, but a few of the Amazon reviews scared me off. I'll wait for a bit to see what more people are saying!

I went ahead and grabbed the one that was available from Amazon Warehouse (at $120ish). I'll definitely do a review for the forum.

First let me say that this product seems very interesting and I think it would be very useful. I think if you record your swing on camera with the cell phone showing the force pattern at the same time would give you the most benefit. Just like they did in the promo except with the golf swing. This would allow you to see where in the swing the force increases and shifts. This could show you if you were not balanced at the start of the swing, achieving proper weight transfer, falling back on the heels, lifting your front foot, rolling on your left side too much or not enough. This just seems to be a great tool to add to your tool bag.

I've downloaded the app on my phone, and it looks like it's designed to do exactly this. I'm looking forward to syncing the video, the force data, and the SkyTrak information this winter.

I think I'd be interested in these as well. I've been interested in force plate technology for a while, but have no idea where I'd go to use one. If these are actually as good as Harry suggests, I'll be looking to buy when my budget allows.

If you didn't catch it elsewhere, the Smart Soles are $90 off for Prime Day:

I had placed an order yesterday for a "Like New" set through Amazon Warehouse for $120, but was able to cancel that an order a new set for $10 cheaper today.

In addition to full swing information, I'm interested to use these for putting and short game practice. I'm willing to find out otherwise, but it seems to me that putting with as little movement in the insoles as possible might be a fun and useful drill.

Pulled the trigger as well.  Early Christmas present 🎁. Looking forward to seeing this, I’m not a gadget guy but this has promise.

OK, time for an unboxing and first impressions post. First, the unboxing:

I put these in a pair of old True Linkswear spikeless shoes I have in my office. The fitting, for me, was spot on.

I charged them the recommended two hours, then I paired them with my Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite (Android 10). They paired quickly with no issues at all. I know that multiple users have complained about connectivity issues, so I'll be keeping a careful watch on that.

Once they were connected and calibrated, I opened the screen on the app where you get the real-time data. Everything appeared to be working very smoothly. I found it interesting to play balance games, trying to hit specific numbers (whether perfect balance, x% on the heel of this foot, etc). It seems to me that that kind of thing could be useful, because the point of tech is to teach you (with objective measurements) what certain realities feel like.

The insoles default to vibrating a beeping each time you get 70% of your pressure on a single foot. This ends up being useful, but it needs to be said: it's about the most annoying thing possible when you're walking: step/buzz/BEEP!, step/buzz/BEEP!. If you're looking to use these at a public range, that's gotta be a bit of a downside.

I have not done any extensive practice with these. I merely went out into the aisle of the church and took a few swings with the hickory I have in my office. First note: unlike some users, I had zero connection hiccups. The connection seemed rock steady during the entire "record a swing" process.

First, before I recorded a swing, I tried to get the feeling of getting to 70% on my lead foot when my lead arm is parallel in the downswing (a pretty common benchmark). It was clear to me right away that I'm nowhere close to this. I would not have considered myself to be someone who "hangs back" in the swing, but at the lead-arm-parallel position coming down, I got this:

Screenshot_20201020-122353_SALTED GOLF.jpg

The vast majority of my weight is hanging back on my trail foot. By impact, I've shifted forward significantly but still inadequately: I had 62% of my weight on my lead foot at impact, when 80%+ is considered more ideal.

So first impressions:

  • It works and didn't present me with any technical issues whatsoever.
  • The data is intelligible and the software seems to give decent options for analyzing a swing.
  • It looks like, right out of the box, that there is massive room for improvement and that these insoles seem like they'll be a helpful tool in making a correction to my swing that I wasn't aware that I needed.

I think at the outset, I'm interested in seeing if I get "better" numbers on these by

  1. trying to hit the numbers, or
  2. by working on something else (ie., PlaneMate or SuperSpeed) and having the pressure numbers change without conscious focus on this

In either case, I'm happy to have the data.

Good call.  Maybe so OG ipod Touch's instead

On a serious note - I really enjoyed working on a force mat two offseasons ago.  Really helped me learn to rotate more vs sway

I love the fact that you are practicing in the church aisle with a hickory club.

I am also interested to see how the feedback from those soles will change your set up perception and feet position/pressure as you use it more to practice.

Great initial write up and video.

Yep. I pastor a small church in Michigan. Having the building to my self during the week has some perks.

I can appreciate that.  Growing up, my father was a minister for the Nazarene church in the Ohio/Pennsylvania area.  I used to practice my soccer dribbling in the empty church between the pews.

Just tap it in.  Lil' taparoo.

My son and I have done a lot of putting down the center aisle. I can attribute Kirke's touch from 40' to our church aisle length:

That is a good looking stroke.  Wish I had that touch.

Total throwaway post, just for fun: my daughter Kate and Kirke were with me in the office this morning (I help with their homeshooling; teaching them to read biblical Greek!), and they wanted a version of the unboxing in which they could make cameos:

Did you take pressure readings of each whack? Awesome video @GolfSpy MPR, this is one of the coolest golf gadgets ( for lack of a better term) I've seen.

Yep, this is cool. So after you take a swing, you can record an analysis of the swing data. Shield your eyes, folks: this isn't pretty:

There's also a page that neatly summarizes the main data points, including the swing tempo data (you mark the address position, top of the swing, and impact position manually):

I think I'm going to try doing some SuperSpeed-esque step drills to experiment with getting my weight shifted forward earlier. Any other drills suggestions?

EDIT: Just tried my first "step swing" with the insoles. It moved the weight ratio at impact to very close to 70/30, though it's still a fraction late.

Great stuff!

The Gary Player Drill has always been a popular one for weight transfer.  I'm not in a position to go find and post a YouTube link right now, but it's basically walking after your shot, including purposefully stepping through with your right foot...

Great drill!  Here is one example of the drill:

There is a link in the description of the video to a clinic Gary Player did, which is fun to see.

The drill part starts at 2:40 in the video.

Throwing a slam ball (medicine ball) is a great way to feel the weight shift/transfer.  I have an eight pound ball and a twenty pound ball.  I set up sideways to a wall three or four feet away and take my golf stance.  I grip the ball on the sides--basically positioned the same as when I grip the club.  I then throw the ball, hopefully hitting the spot, and catch the ball when it bounces back.

I can get by with a less than ideal shift with the 8 pound ball.  But to toss the 20 pound ball, I have to get to the left side.  I try to throw it easy and hard, making the same movement.

Doing it left and right handed helps balance out the body as well.

A variation on the above is to throw the ball down the line as far as possible.  By trying to throw it further and further, you learn where your power comes from.
