best practice net?

Recommended Posts

i’m starting to look into setting myself up to practice this winter. i’ve got the BirdieBall putting mat in the basement, but unfortunately i’ll need to take full swings out to the garage.

what’s the best practice net to set up in there?

something relatively easy to put up and take down would be ideal, as my garage is set up as my gym and i don’t have enough room to leave it up full time.

a net/mat combo would be great, but isn’t a deal breaker. i can deal with the mat after getting the net

what do you all have?! let’s see em!

i purchased the Rukket net a few years ago and have been very happy with it. It uses a unique folding system that turns this large net into a small round package almost instantly (disclaimer: once you figure out what they are saying to you in the instructions). Durable double netting and easy storage.

My golf coach just has some netting hung up from the rafters in his garage. Definitely quick up and down.

thanks @cnosil

i put "practice net" into the search bar and came up pretty empty, otherwise i wouldn't have made another thread.  i'll take a look at what you linked in your post.

hanging a thick net from the garage ceiling is actually a great idea.  i have a long exposed beam that i could just put a few eye-hooks into and roll the net up when it's not in use...hmmmm i'll have to take a few measurements later.

i also found this, which looks pretty good:

Search terms can be tough. I generally start broad and just put in “net”.

Also, my coach has a mat but said he likes low pile carpet to hit off as well; said it could be better than hitting mats and can just be a remnant from a local carpet store.

i've got rubber flooring in my garage, so that would actually be a great option.  the carpet square wouldnt really move around at all because of the rubber base and it would be somewhat cushioned underneath.

that's an awesome option to start.  i do have my eye on this mat though, so it might go on the christmas list:

i was looking at the rukket website, their stuff seems really nice.  i've got a decent amount of space in the garage so the one you linked wouldn't fit the bill but their haack net seems about right.  good to know it's quality stuff

Another thing for you to keep in mind is ball speed and net durability. Most of us probably don’t have the potential issues you have, but if I were you I would be concerned about balls going through the net.

I've got the most wanted Net Return V2 and if you want a fixed net it is hard to beat.  But since you want easy up and down this should be your last choice.

it's a definite concern.  i think no matter what net i end up with, i'll be fixing a section of tarp or blanket to the center just for safety sake.

this is another reason i like the idea of just hanging a net. that way i don't have to worry about buying a structure, and can spend more on a higher quality net.

The Rukket has 2 nets, a heavy duty net hanging straight down about 2/3 the way in and the actual practice net behind it to catch anything that happens to get by. I just put mine up for the winter and looked it over good and there is no sign of any wear or tears.

@cnosilyou really got me thinking so i went out to the garage as soon as i got home and took some measurements.

please excuse the mess, my wife doesn’t re-rack her weights 🤦🏻

i’ve got 7’ to the bottom of that beam, and 12’ across to where it contacts the ceiling.  from the back wall (mirror) to the back of the beam is 3ft.  i set the foam roller at my intended hitting location, which is 6ft from the beam/net

id have to move the bicycles out (i already have to do this when i work out anyway) and maybe slide the bike and GHD closer to the door  in order to swing a driver comfortably, but that’s minor.  i’ve also got 8ft comfortably to set up the rapsodo mlm.  things are looking up

i have NO idea why the pictures are upside down. i can’t get them to flip around either 🤷🏻‍♂️

Earlier this year just before Covid, I purchased an Amazon Basics golf net. It was ridiculously cheap, and if it was terrible, I was only out $70. It wasn't terrible though. I had a Rukket net for a long time before I got rid of it, and this net is practically the same thing for half the price. It handles all of my clubs, even driver. If you are looking for something affordable that isn't hard to store, I recommend it.

It seems to have gone up in price to around $90 for some reason, but it's still cheaper than most.

thanks, i’ll take a look at the amazon net.

i’m kind of leaning towards just dropping a net from the beam in my garage though. that gives me the ultimate ability to put it up and take it down

i’ve started searching for the heaviest duty netting i can find.

With your speed, I think you will want a combo of a baffle net to go along with some high-impact netting. I don't know if one piece of netting will hold up to your ball speeds for too long, even high speed impact netting.

No endorsement of this particular product, but it's something I've had my eye on for my garage (similar setup where I hope to one day hang some netting from the rafters.

thanks for the link! the 10x15 would be a good fit. that would give me wall to wall coverage and an extra 3’ on the floor to make sure the ball gets deadened well

i think i’d still want to double layer the middle. something like this:

I picked up the Sporina net. It has has a  target sheet that hangs down a couple feet from the back of the net.  I really like the sloped “floor” that rolls the ball back to me. Has a nice chipping net you can hang as well

I really like my rukk  net. Good luck. https://www.dropbox.com/s/a9z15tj5w8zw4qw/VID_20180102_132646_out.mp4?dl=0

Expands and folds up easily  It’s compact...  It has chipping targets or full swing for every club  Ball returns to you... I hope this old video works.

thanks for the link! the 10x15 would be a good fit. that would give me wall to wall coverage and an extra 3’ on the floor to make sure the ball gets deadened well

i think i’d still want to double layer the middle. something like this:

https://www.parbuster.com/collections/golf-impact-panels/products/3x3-hd-target

thoughts?

You could definitely that go that route. I was thinking netting behind with this panel in front, but two panels would be even better, I'm sure!

Earlier this year I bought a 10 x 15 from Florida Net Company.  I have it hanging from the rafters in the pole barn.  I used a heavy duty rod fastened to the rafters and the carabiners on the net slide like a shower curtain to stretch it open and bunch it up in a corner when done.  They have regular and high impact for golf.  It has worked very well for me.

Pics of the set up.  Its a pole barn so its not especially pretty but the one side of the net is fastened to the rafter support brace.  There are carabiners on the net hooked over an unused ground rod from a past job, probably the most expensive net rod ever!  The other upper corner of the net has a carabiner attached to the corner of the sliding door so that as I open it it pulls the net along with it stretching it out across the opening.  In the pics it looks like the rod and door track are attached in some way but they are not.  The rod is only supported on each end and hangs in front of the track.

how tall is the doorway? looks like you’ve got 2-3 feet collected on the floor? does that work well for deadening the balls and having them collect at the base of the net?

I'll have to measure it again but if my memory is semi intact, the doorway opening is about 9' and the  10' side of the net is hanging from there so only a little over 1' is gathered on the ground.  It catches the balls nicely and they lay there.  Once in a while if the previous ball is laying just the right way on the net bottom the next ball hitting the net will cause it to roll back to me.
