TM SIM 3Wood Unofficial review

Hey all for anyone that does not know me, name is Mark and I have the luxury of living up in the Northeast where I wish the golf season was year round, but here we are end of season. My game is decent. Have dropped my handicap this year almost a full point from 7.9 to 7.3.

I added a 3W to my arsenal this year early in the season because I was not happy with the consistency of my driver and also wanted to give a new shaft a whirl. Also got a good deal. Well the driver really turned around this year and the offseason work payed off but the 3W came in handy a lot and figured I would do a quick unofficial for yall.

Looks:

If you are not a fan of the carbon fiber than buyer beware, but for me you cant beat the Taylormade look. I do enjoy a more classic look that a Titleist provides but damn does TM make a sleek looking club. I prefer the lighter carbon that the SIM provides here as well as the white line to give you some depth when looking down at address.  Bottom is great and cleans up well from tee marks. Gives you a great visual for tee marks down the middle as well. I also like the plane face and markings. Ball marks show up well and wipe off easy. Also classic Taylormade alignment aid.

 

Sound/Feel:

As usual very subjective. Little clicky but sound isn't what does it for me but feel on the other hand very important. Compression is soft on this club, feels great every time and the ball really jumps off the face.

On Course:

Like I said in the beginning my original intention for this club was to be a more consistent ball off the tee, I go through ups/downs and I wanted this to be the club I could rely on to get out in the fairway without losing much distance. Also really wanted to get the HZRDUS Green shaft to see if it would be a good fit for me and potentially go in my driver (and yes perfect fit).

Well the numbers speak for themselves. The 4 balls that were left out to the right came in the first 2 rounds I had the club so I think those are really going to be few and far between. This club has done exactly what I wanted and then some. Have not lost much distance from this to the driver. I can also bank on it being down the pipe or a little left so I set up for that. 

I attribute a lot of this consistency to the shaft. Its a perfect fit for me but the club head gives me confidence  when I line up that I am going to get the ball out there and its going to be in a spot I wanted. My swing speed is also keeping up with my driver. 123 was my max on this bad boy but typically is around 113-116 similar to the driver.

Overall:

This club is my go to off the tee when driver is misbehaving. I did not use it as much as anticipated this year (27 shots total) just because my driver was on point, but was a great club to utilize when I was in a tight spot and the landing area was just a little too close to something for the driver.

I think that the price point originally was very high but now that these are reasonable and affordable online that if you are in the market you really should look at these woods. Taylormade has done a fantastic design on this and love the carbon fiber, very modern look.

Does the twist face throw you off?  I tried the SIM driver a few weeks ago, hardly noticed it, but I picked up the 3 wood and though how in the heck could I Keep this thing in play.  Looks like the ball would go all sorts of crazy directions.

So didn’t notice anything crazy that would throw me off. The twist face definitly did what it said I think I mean the numbers speak for themselves. You can see in the picture of the face I had a good amount of toeish contact and the ball flew straight as an arrow.

that V sole is awesome to. Definitely helps hitting off the deck with that

Visually? Or it was going different directions? When I got mine it looks funky on the ground, in fact each time I hit it when I look down I have to tell myself to trust it. Very consistent though.

What are you seeing visually? Maybe I’m missing it because at address I really like the look especially with the white in between the CF and face. I understand the curvature but I am not seeing that at address

To me it looks like an upside down spoon.  Very convex.

If I don't look at the face I love it. I love the look of driver. 3W sits super closed to me (I even have it set open), it is not but just a visual. Almost like the curvature is not uniform, which I have no idea if it is or not.

Ok gotcha. I see a little bit but overall address don’t see it which is good. Regardless this has been extremely trusty for me as a straight slight draw ball flight regardless of where I’m making contact (relative to on the face anyway)

Good deal.  I think the SLDR TS I have does have some bulge and roll to the face, but it is silver, might just be that contrast from white to black making it look more pronounced.

Glad it is doing its job.  Like all golf clubs should do.

That was definitly a rare occurrence at 123 with the shaft though I feel like I can swing really free. I struggle with my current driver at times because I have a pretty strong load and I lose track of the head so I tend to hesitate on the down swing and messes my tempo all up. This has allowed me to just really swing it....which is awesome

Time to hit the gym! Pack in a few protein shakes, too...

Nice review @Lacassem. Do you hit it a lot from the fairway or just the tee? I like the results with my Cobra SpeedZone from the tee, but the sound is something I'm still not a huge fan of. Does this sound similar to a driver/hybrid or is a more of a dull wood-like thwack I get from the SpeedZone?

Have not worked out since this whole crap started gym was free at work too. 
 

I have used it off the turf on course only a few times and no issues. I wouldn’t use it off a weird below or above my feet lie. Nothing against the club I’m just not comfortable doing that with a club like this. No issues.

its very similar to the cobra. I wouldn’t compare it to a driver sound. It’s pretty drowned out overall not very loud/overpowering if that makes sense

Quick update, few years and still using the SIM 3 wood. I love it. Off the deck, off the tee doesnt matter its an absolute smoke.

I am 53% fairways hit with a left biased 35% left miss. With a smart distance of 243 yards from 123 total shots. I love this club and its going to take alot to remove it but its aging and I am sure something down the road could knock it off.

My favorite thing about the club is the feeling off the face. It honestly feels better than my driver on the screws. Its just an absolute blast off the face and for me has the perfect flight for windy days.

I actually have the Sim 3 Wood in the Rocket (14* loft) version. It's one of my favorite clubs in the bag. I use it off the tee when my driver spin is too high. I use it off the deck on Par 5s with a cut swing to increase spin into a green. It's such a versatile club. I am curious your thoughts on the Hazardous Green? What are your thoughts on the shot profile? I have used the Black and Smoke versions. I like them quite a bit, but the Black was too high flighted and the smoke was a little butt stiff for me.

Honestly I probably should not be swinging it. Its robust but it just works really well for me. It is draw biased. Very typical flight, I do not miss right with it. I just know exactly what its going to do so I cannot change it. Really makes par 5's reachable on 2 good shots.

I am currently gaming the SIM Ti at 15° for the 3 wood slot in my bag and nothing seems to be able to kick it out as much as I try. I was just at a demo day for Taylormade yesterday at Heron Glenn and the only thing we changed after the session was a shaft upgrade to hit the right window. The new stuff just couldn't compete for me and I would argue that this is as big of a jump in the 3 wood space as Rocket Ballz was.

For me the ball just seems to explode off the face, its so smooth. Its a great club for me on any day but on a windy day and I am not hitting driver well with the wind I know this will be a piercer.

Not the exact same line, but I picked up a Sim 2 Max 3 wood with a Lin-Q Purple shaft last year and while it took some getting used to as the shaft loaded a lot differently than the stock atmos shaft I had in my prior M4, the thing is an absolute hammer when struck well. I don't have near the speed as you do, but you're so right that when you hit it on the screws it's just a completely PURE feel. Awesome, dead straight and piercing ball flight. Been struggling with all my woods a bit this year, but I know it'll come around again.
