Slazenger Ben Hogan Bounce Sole 1+

Hello MGS,

I recently purchased a set of Slazenger Ben Hogan Bounce Sole 1+ irons and laminate woods (2-9, SW; 1, 2, 3, 4) from the local Goodwill for a whopping $34. I’ve been collecting Hogans for 7 years now, but I’ve only ever seen Slazenger Hogans on the internet. I know they’re rare, and the only eBay listing I’ve found for the exact same set is 3-PW for about $2000. They have a shaft band that says “Made in Australia.” I have been searching for more information on these clubs for the last few days, but I haven’t been able to find anything. If you are or know someone that could tell me more, I would love to get in touch. I have no intention of selling these and they’ll probably be buried with me.

I'm no expert, but from my own Hogan obsession, I would have to guess these were late fifties, early sixties. Slazenger was the first company to license hogan gear, and they made balls for him too up through 1958. Hogan went on to work with MacGregor, and released a few lines of clubs through them during the sixties, before eventually starting the namesake company. The Slazenger Hogan line was more widely distributed in the UK, and outside of the US in general, which may have had something to do with the switch to MacGregor who had the US market on lock with every endorsement you could dream of. These are gorgeous, and as you know, quite rare. Amazing find, thanks for sharing and I hope you find more info on these beauties.

Thank you for the info! I knew Hogan worked with Macgregor (actually found a Parmaker 6 iron today) so I figured Slazenger must’ve come first.

I cleaned these up a bit more and put some pictures on my Instagram. I really don’t know what to do - regrip and play a round with them, or never touch them again, haha. They sure are gorgeous though. Here are some more pics.

Those are gorgeous. Gotta love the pre-speed slot speed slot. There's lots of legend around Hogan, and seeing that kind of  commitment to his vision makes me think the vast majority is true. Let us know how a pure strike off of that 2 iron feels.

I am jealous!  I have been looking for the bounce sole clubs to add to my own Hogan collection.  Great find and great buy.  The fact that you picked up the woods also is amazing. Enjoy!

I’m thinking about it. They look fantastic sitting in a display bag, but the urge to hit them is VERY strong. I think I’ll regrip them with new Swing Rite grips and play a half set the next time I go out. I’m not sure about those woods, though. I don’t want to make them look any worse than they already are. But hey - tools, not jewels... except, these actually do feel like jewels to me, haha.

The only clubs I’m missing are the Equalizer and 1 iron! I couldn’t believe how complete this set was when we got to the store. Ive never swung the Bounce Soles, but there are multiple versions of that set iirc, from this, to a Mac (I think) and then the actual Hogan Bounce Sole. To be honest, I never wanted the set because of the big “1+” stamped onto the club. Kinda funny how something like that can influence what you play/collect.
