Unofficial Review: L.A.B. Golf Directed Force 2.1 Putter

@yungkory - Any news on your putter? I would guess I got my order in right before a rush. Literally a week or so after I got it, both Shiels and Peter Finch reviewed them, along with a massive social media blast from them.

The goal in getting fitted and purchasing a new putter was to really work on my putting this offseason. It's been a huge help having the EXPUTT simulator, since I can practice putts up to 50 feet indoors without taking up much room. I also enjoy the path and face measurements (even if they're not perfect), as I can see trends with how changes to my setup, grip, etc. effect my stroke.

Anyway, I've made a few changes to my putting setup and have been getting some good results. From tonight's session of 35 putts randomized between 5-30 feet:

IMG_20122020_174419_(1280_x_1080_pixel).jpg.45586ca7010c2e6039b942e5ce831ebd.jpgIMG_20122020_174440_(1280_x_1080_pixel).jpg.9030e1a64e2ee12cb95202396594bca6.jpg

One lone putt that was not within a three foot circle, and I made 16 of the 35. Pretty sure the long miss was a seven footer, and I tend to struggle with short distances on the EXPUTT.

Obviously, this is not the course and I'm hitting dead straight putts, but I'm thrilled to see changes to the putter and my stroke making an improvement.

Supposed to go into production this week, and I'll hopefully get it sometime between Christmas and New year's. Matt was saying when I put my order in that they were moving warehouses because they outgrew their current one, plus the holidays I'm sure didn't help. Order was placed on 12/2 so they're not far off the 14-21 day estimate they gave me.

The wait is killing me though!!!

I learned over the past few days, don't mess around with removing and putting back in shafts in the DF 2.1.

I am selling mine anyway, but was trying to pull the Stability shaft and put the stock shaft back in. Needless to say, I learned that there is a massive amount of lead shot (or maybe tungsten in the newer version), in the shaft tip. Learned that after I was removing what I thought was a plug of epoxy in the tip of the stock shaft.

When they say it's unlike anything you've ever felt before, they mean it. I took it to the practice greens yesterday to give it a few rolls. Practiced for about 45 minutes or so before it got too hot (low key brag) and I had to go pickup dinner. Early takeaways:

1. It's not as horrible to look at as I anticipated.

2. I like the extra inch over my ER5.

3. Feels easy to line up. If the absence of torque doesn't end up meaning anything for my performance, I have some confidence that I'll at least be aligning better.

4. Feel off of the face is somehow both firm and soft? Softer than my ER5 and firmer than the old stroke lab I had a few years back.

5. Seems to put a really good roll on the ball

Playing 9 after work tomorrow so we shall see if I find myself making more putts that I feel I should.

One quibble with your last sentence.  You should never be able to have that thought, since the thought should be that EVERY putt is going in.  Lots of times the body will do what the mind conceives...

Hello All,

I bought one of these when Peter Finch switched to the LAB putter.  I had seen them online but had never given them a second thought until I watched his review.  So I found one on line and put it in the bag.  Notice, I did not get fit for this and it is the standard set up for loft and lie.  After I bought the putter, I found this forum and began to read.  Here is what I have noticed.  I do not struggle with getting the ball to the hole.  I feel more confident with 3- 6 foot putts, and long putts actually have a chance now.  And my alignment is significantly better.  My initial putting with this putter was not great but, I'm committed to it.  My last outing was nine holes.  I short sided myself and was left with about a 25 foot putt back up the hill.  I made that putt and that's when the magic started to happen.  For that round I had 5 one putts and 4 two putts.  This is awesome for me.  I average 32 putts a round.  Normally I don't switch putter, but this year I went through 4 putters.  My old three ball is illegal and now that I'm playing in a league, I have retired it.

The one thing I can say as I have read this forum is that most people are talking about the putter.  But let's not forget about the basics.  Alignment, starting point and reading the green.  I have realized from this forum and the putter, that I need to take my time and read the greens better.  This has made all the world of difference(putter probably has something to do with it too  LOL).  No matter how much you practice, if you aren't reading the greens correctly for your pace of putting, then you wont make putts.

Definitely the ugliest putters around, but I have seen so many reviews on these and how good they are I am intrigued.  There is no way I would be able to find one close by so I will be following closely as well.  What made you try that model as opposed to their other model?

Coming from a Spider Tour Red and then Spider X, I preferred the looks of the mallet/original model. I didn't roll the blade, but I've read they feel slightly different. It would be interesting now to try the other model to see what differences there are between the two.

There is a used blade one for sale near me, it looks like a block of steel on a stick.  I can see how the design of the 2.1 is supposed to help with controlling torque but the blade I can't see it.  I think I would also opt for the 2.1 design as well.  It will be interesting to follow along through the summer to see if you think the putter helped you or just your overall practice helped you more.

That's going to be the big question in my mind as well. However, I can say with certainty that going to a longer shaft has taken some of the pressure off my back and so more practice is possible. I'm hoping that the L.A.B. in combination with the EXPUTT this winter will have my season started off on the right foot come spring.

That's going to be the big question in my mind as well. However, I can say with certainty that going to a longer shaft has taken some of the pressure off my back and so more practice is possible. I'm hoping that the L.A.B. in combination with the EXPUTT this winter will have my season started off on the right foot come spring.

With a longer shaft, and you being more upright, do you still have your eyes over the ball or are they more inside now?  How has that changed in your setup?

My eyes are now 1-2" inside the ball. I line my balls and use those lines to aim, so not being directly over the ball isn't a big deal to me.

I know you asked @edingc but I'll chime in as well with my experiences. From my video fitting, Matt saw that my eyes were actually outside of the line. He wanted me to be inside the line, and I wanted to stand up straighter because my back was getting sore when practicing, so the longer shaft worked for both of those.

I had 14 putts today during my weekly 9-hole round, with one 3-putt on the first hole from barely on the green. Bad leave, bad read on the 2nd putt, etc etc. Whatever, I made up for it later. I like how point-and-shoot this putter feels for me, and I've stopped trying to use the line on the ball to line my putts up. Seems to be working decently.

Sounds like the L.A.B. been working well for you, then?
