eBay purchase - what should I do?

Buffly

Recommended Posts

I bought a set of 3-E Hogan Edge Forged Irons for $35 on eBay but, the E wedge is +1" and the 5i is -1/2" making the set, as is, kinda unplayable.

My question is if you think I should cut down the E wedge and reshaft the 5i and keep them or just return them?

I am torn because I got such a steal on them.

A separate issue is the grips - they look original and dry. I am wondering if wrapping grips with Hockey Grip Tape is a cheap alternative to replacing the grips? They are a bit slippery in their current state. (I haven't tried sandpaper on them yet)

Note: these are the old Hogan irons from 1989.

The clubs are pictured EW-3i. You can see the E is as long as the 8i and the 5i is about the same as the 6i length. And, I think the 5i has a different shaft all together because the ferrule is different too.

Any advice is appreciated.

It seems to me that you've thinking about the variables correctly. It you got a great deal on them, there's a real chance that to return them, you'll be out nearly as much in shipping as you'd be to make the adjustments that need to be done. It might be worth contacting the seller, bringing up the (I'm assuming undisclosed in the listing) issues with the set, and seeing if he'd agree to some kind of partial refund.

As for the grips: I assume that hockey tape would work functionally. I suppose if it were done carefully, it could look fine, but I guess I'm kinda skeptical on that. But if the goal is to get them functional at a discount, it's worth a shot. Keep us posted if you do it; I'm sort of intrigued as to how well it would work.

If you were to fix the issues (shaft lengths and regrip), would you do it yourself or have someone else do it?

Basic club repair type things and since I am guessing you are considering them as a "classic" set of clubs to have fun with.   I would cut down the wedge, extend the 5i, and then put on some inexpensive new grips.  You can try sandpaper,  but it they are dry rotted that probably won't make a lot of difference.   Hireko has grips in the $2.00 range.

I wouldn't bother to contact the ebay seller, to me it wouldn't be worth it.  It is easy to cut down the wedge to the length you want and to extend the 5i to the length you want.  Steel butt extension is $3.  The grips aren't worth trying to save as dried out as they are.  Golf Works has a lot of choices for under $4 each.

Depending on what your personal finances and/or interests are, you could use this as a beginning to learning about club building. IMO it's become a fun and helpful hobby. I've scavenges heads and shafts and put clubs together here and there. There's definitely some reward in using clubs you personally out together.

Also, as mentioned previously, you can have the 5i extended for minimal cost.

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

I'd suggest picking a club or two from the set that are (or close to) correct, sand and clean up the grips, try them out on the range, then decide on whether to invest more time and $$.

Thank you all for suggesting I keep them and adjust them as needed.

I haven't added a shaft extension myself before so, this seems like a perfect time to start. I have cut clubs down before so, I feel comfortable with that.

I did message the seller to let him know I would appreciate a partial refund to account for the item being not as described - he listed then in good condition without reference to length issues.

And, here are some more pictures. The two extra clubs are Adams b Tom Watson Gap and Lob wedges the seller threw in because of shipping delays 😁

Agree with everyone, keep them and and fix them. I bought what they call recycled grips - grips that have been removed of new clubs - in this case Callaway - 14 for $35 to re-grip my Topflite Tour Irons. I have an air compressor so it makes removing the old grips usually easy, did not need to cut them and putting the new grips on really easy.

After going on Golfworks, extension $3 and extension epoxy $7 = $10, Grips $3/each (x8), grip tape $7, grip solvent $4.50, shaft clamp $2.50, and shipping of $8 is just under $60 for all new grips and adjusting the length. I will put in the order soon. No rush yet. Sometimes they offer $1.99 shipping

Just my recommendation, get the Brampton HF100 grip solvent. All the other stuff seems super toxic based on smell.

If you intend on playing with them, I would say get them fixed up for your lengths and grips, but if you are intending to just display them, I would keep them as they are for the history value and the original grips.

If you already have some JB Weld that will work fine for the extension.  Rather than buying solvent, I use a little gas for tape solvent to slide the grips on.

I think so too! I still have another 60 dollars to throw at them to get them hitable. Then there is probably another $35 for loft and lie if I need that adjusted. Then I would be in them for about $130 to my specs and new grips.

You want to have good ventilation when using gas even though you just use a little on each club.  😄  I was the only one that didn't smoke way back when I worked at the golf course (70's) so I got to do most of the grip changes for the members so the other guys wouldn't ignite the fumes!  I ended up doing a few thousand grips while working there.  I tried the water based years ago but it didn't slide on nearly as easy as the regular tape back then.  Maybe it is better now?  If so that would be the way to go.  Or use an air compressor if you have one to get the grips on & off, no grip tape needed at all.

Well, I had a chance to hit the 9i, 7i, and 4i, which all were factory spec without the problems I originally listed.

I currently game Ping G2 TT stiff, 2° up with new midsize Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips. The Hogan Edge Irons I have are definitely more flat, less bounce, and no leading edge relief that are all features I have gotten used to with my Pings.

I definitely struggled with the difference but, the feedback on miss-hits is what I was really looking for.

I did place an order for an extension for the 5i and, I found new old stock Golf Pride Victory Swing Rite grips to replace the two I am fixing so they will all match. Cost about $60.

And, if that was not enough, the seller on eBay have me a partial refund of $20 for the error.

Paid $35 for the irons then partial refunded $20 = $15

Paid $37+22 = $59 for parts/supplies and grips

Total $74 so far.

Only further cost could be hockey grip tape and loft and lie.

I would be interested in your review of the condition of the victory grips when you get them.  I have looked at a few ebay listings but thought they may be dried out and cracking just from age even though they hadn't been used.

Well, good and bad news on the grips. They arrived today, they are in good shape, pliable, not cracked at all. But, they are not Jumbo like the rest of the set already on my clubs. The eBay seller is going to give me a refund and let me keep the grips.

The pattern on the grips does not provide as much grip as a new TackiMac or Tour Velvet. The design of the Golf Pride Victory Swing Rite® grip has a lot of smooth areas in between the shallow grooves.

So, I guess I have 4 NOS grips for sale?

I ordered TackiMac grips and will replace all of them. (Jumbo)

If you were to fix the issues (shaft lengths and regrip), would you do it yourself or have someone else do it?

I would fix them and use them. For what you paid, it's still a deal. If you don't like them after fixing them, donate them to The First Tee or other worthy organization.

Forgot to add.....we need a couple pics of the iron heads themselves!!    😀

I did some work on the clubs and found something very fascinating.

The E wedge had a wooden dowel installed like a shaft extension to make it 1" longer. I drilled down the center of it to remove most of it but, I felt leaving some of the wooden dowel might be a cool shock dampener. I trimmed it to the correct length and, installed a TackiMac Jumbo grip - much more grip than the NOS GP Victory Swing Rite° grips that I ordered (more on that in the previous post).

I also remove the grip and installed the shaft extension in the 5i. It will also get the TackiMac grip when the second batch I ordered shows up.

Pic: 5i with shaft extension installed to bring it back to standard length and the E wedge cut down and new grip installed. The 8i to the right shows the original grip.

5i playing length 38"

E wedge playing length 35 3/4" (E same as PW)

Note: 9i is 36" and each iron is +1/2" so, only the E wedge is 1/4" but, that was because it came in at the right Swing Weight at that length. With the Jumbo grips, the swing weight on the set is D0. (I have a swing weight scale)

Grips are installed! Ready to play them for real.

I think they are going to need a lie adjustment more upright for me but, that will be after a few practice sessions first.

Solid find on those. Glad to see you are going to get them into playing shape. All the work that needs to be done should be pretty straightforward. Just be sure to buy the right diameter extension for that shaft. My guess is it would be 0.580 but I know nothing of vintage Hogans so I'm sure some of the collectors here will chime in on what to buy.

Edit: This is why it's important to read all the way to the last post before posting. Looks like everything turned out well, now you just need to report back on how you hit 'em.

I hit the 8-E at the range today. The feel was good. The forgiveness is much less than my Ping G2 irons, as expected. But, the consistency on distance is fantastic.

I still hit mostly a slight to moderate 5-12yd fade which tells me that the lie is too flat for me - I can feel the toe digging in.

Loft and lie is the next step to make them suited for me.
