eBay purchase - what should I do?

Recommended Posts

Our Sponsors

I bought a set of 3-E Hogan Edge Forged Irons for $35 on eBay but, the E wedge is +1" and the 5i is -1/2" making the set, as is, kinda unplayable.

My question is if you think I should cut down the E wedge and reshaft the 5i and keep them or just return them?

I am torn because I got such a steal on them.

A separate issue is the grips - they look original and dry. I am wondering if wrapping grips with Hockey Grip Tape is a cheap alternative to replacing the grips? They are a bit slippery in their current state. (I haven't tried sandpaper on them yet)

Note: these are the old Hogan irons from 1989.

The clubs are pictured EW-3i. You can see the E is as long as the 8i and the 5i is about the same as the 6i length. And, I think the 5i has a different shaft all together because the ferrule is different too.

Any advice is appreciated.

It seems to me that you've thinking about the variables correctly. It you got a great deal on them, there's a real chance that to return them, you'll be out nearly as much in shipping as you'd be to make the adjustments that need to be done. It might be worth contacting the seller, bringing up the (I'm assuming undisclosed in the listing) issues with the set, and seeing if he'd agree to some kind of partial refund.

As for the grips: I assume that hockey tape would work functionally. I suppose if it were done carefully, it could look fine, but I guess I'm kinda skeptical on that. But if the goal is to get them functional at a discount, it's worth a shot. Keep us posted if you do it; I'm sort of intrigued as to how well it would work.

If you were to fix the issues (shaft lengths and regrip), would you do it yourself or have someone else do it?

Basic club repair type things and since I am guessing you are considering them as a "classic" set of clubs to have fun with.   I would cut down the wedge, extend the 5i, and then put on some inexpensive new grips.  You can try sandpaper,  but it they are dry rotted that probably won't make a lot of difference.   Hireko has grips in the $2.00 range.

I wouldn't bother to contact the ebay seller, to me it wouldn't be worth it.  It is easy to cut down the wedge to the length you want and to extend the 5i to the length you want.  Steel butt extension is $3.  The grips aren't worth trying to save as dried out as they are.  Golf Works has a lot of choices for under $4 each.

Forgot to add.....we need a couple pics of the iron heads themselves!!    😀

Depending on what your personal finances and/or interests are, you could use this as a beginning to learning about club building. IMO it's become a fun and helpful hobby. I've scavenges heads and shafts and put clubs together here and there. There's definitely some reward in using clubs you personally out together.

Also, as mentioned previously, you can have the 5i extended for minimal cost.

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

I'd suggest picking a club or two from the set that are (or close to) correct, sand and clean up the grips, try them out on the range, then decide on whether to invest more time and $$.

Thank you all for suggesting I keep them and adjust them as needed.

I haven't added a shaft extension myself before so, this seems like a perfect time to start. I have cut clubs down before so, I feel comfortable with that.

I did message the seller to let him know I would appreciate a partial refund to account for the item being not as described - he listed then in good condition without reference to length issues.

And, here are some more pictures. The two extra clubs are Adams b Tom Watson Gap and Lob wedges the seller threw in because of shipping delays 😁

Those are good looking clubs and I'm glad you're going try to make them work. Looking at the 5 iron, it does look like a different shaft because the ferrule is different from the others. All I can say is, if they are anything like the Hogan's I pick up you'll be happy with them.

Agree with everyone, keep them and and fix them. I bought what they call recycled grips - grips that have been removed of new clubs - in this case Callaway - 14 for $35 to re-grip my Topflite Tour Irons. I have an air compressor so it makes removing the old grips usually easy, did not need to cut them and putting the new grips on really easy.

After going on Golfworks, extension $3 and extension epoxy $7 = $10, Grips $3/each (x8), grip tape $7, grip solvent $4.50, shaft clamp $2.50, and shipping of $8 is just under $60 for all new grips and adjusting the length. I will put in the order soon. No rush yet. Sometimes they offer $1.99 shipping

Just my recommendation, get the Brampton HF100 grip solvent. All the other stuff seems super toxic based on smell.

They are good looking clubs indeed.

If you intend on playing with them, I would say get them fixed up for your lengths and grips, but if you are intending to just display them, I would keep them as they are for the history value and the original grips.

If you already have some JB Weld that will work fine for the extension.  Rather than buying solvent, I use a little gas for tape solvent to slide the grips on.

I will do that. They have a house branded Golfworks solvent but they sell Brampton too.

I did see a water based grip tape as well that I'm guessing just uses water but, I'm not sure it sticks as well?

I think so too! I still have another 60 dollars to throw at them to get them hitable. Then there is probably another $35 for loft and lie if I need that adjusted. Then I would be in them for about $130 to my specs and new grips.

I intend on gaming at least 8i-E to replace my Ping G2 irons for the scoring clubs if they perform as I expect. Otherwise, it will be more clubs for my vintage bag when I play with 'old dudes'.

You want to have good ventilation when using gas even though you just use a little on each club.  😄  I was the only one that didn't smoke way back when I worked at the golf course (70's) so I got to do most of the grip changes for the members so the other guys wouldn't ignite the fumes!  I ended up doing a few thousand grips while working there.  I tried the water based years ago but it didn't slide on nearly as easy as the regular tape back then.  Maybe it is better now?  If so that would be the way to go.  Or use an air compressor if you have one to get the grips on & off, no grip tape needed at all.
