Well if we were down here I could loan or give some away that is if you like Macgregor irons and a hodgepodge of woods.

Playing with a set of BIG STU owned Macgregors... that must be one of the highest ranking MGS forum honors!

With all the posts from @sirchunksalot refinishing thread and winter looming in MA it’s hard not to think of a nice winter project to keep from going stir crazy.

@sirchunksalot will you be renting sets for the 2021 classic bag challenge?

then it can be a business decision to keep extra sets 😉

and searching for clubs is your job... just sayin'

I think anyone should give it a go, it's both fun and relaxing to do some restoration on clubs. I'm hoping to have a setup to learn regripping by Christmas break along with paint fill. If I get too many I'll either have to rent them out or give them away, or Mrs Chunks might build a doghouse for me.

I was conflicted over which emoji to select for that post....

love it for the looks of those beauties ....

or   sad because you didn't pick them up!!!  .....  (yet)  !!  🤣

I'm probably going to stop back by either Saturday after work or head down Monday to see if they're still there. I'm debating on whether to get them or they had a set of Wilson's that I can't seem to remember the exact name. They weren't on Ironfinder and I wish I would have snapped a picture. Decisions, decisions.

This is not the classic club challenge but--- I was messing around in the shop yesterday morning and found a wedge I forgot I had. It was a Cally X forged 52* wedge. Rusty as heck so it had to come off the pile. Played a 9 hole practice round with the metals mostly working on fairway shots. Ditched the hybrids and put my Adams 5 wood and old TM V-Steel 7 wood in. the surprise was the Wedge. The grooves are in great shape and it spun the crap out of the Super Soft Cally balls and to boot it has the little CC stamp so it is conforming. In fact that wedge scuffed both of the balls I was playing

That's pretty impressive scuffing a soft cally ball.  This has quickly become one of my favorite threads.  Keep the photos and scores coming guys.  I've got one more serious round this week (tomorrow) w/ the new driver in play for the first time and then I am jumping in the fray.  Can't wait to hit the old butter knives on course for the first time.

I’m a little further ahead in the game than I thought I was I guess.. I forgot that I had this in my office.  My dad gave it to me and I know absolutely nothing about it.  But it certainly LOOKS like it will qualify.. didn’t feel too bad rolling some putts, just felt really light.

From what I can tell its a Spaulding & Bros Tru-Focus.

I am glad they got a good home. Glad someone is able to swing those stiff shafts. I played 3 rounds with them. 2 at my former home course Indian Wells and one at World Tour. Those sans the 8 iron were a scrap pile find. My buddy over on WRX sent me the 8 iron free. Me and him do a lot of stuff as far as trading etc. He was glad I found them a good home. Part of the fun of classic clubs for me playing them and finding good homes.

Those putters are really fun on wet Bermuda greens that have not been cut. Do the little pop stroke thing and it will get the ball on top of the grass. For a really true feel putt a balata ball with one of those. I have several that style but my favorite is a Otey Chrisman with a hickory shaft. I mess with it sometimes with a balata ball just for the joy of the feel

Too bad I didn't bring my woods with me yesterday.  I'd played my 1-SW TW282 Rams, shot even par 35 on the back, rated 34.8/125.

Now when I go live, I'm sure I'll shoot something a million higher.  LOL

Have something to share.  Not as good as what I did this past Tuesday, but I don't shoot even par on nine holes all that often.  😉

Clubs in the bag!
Ping Zing Blonde driver (green dot) and 3w, KT-M shafts
1 iron, Golden Ram Vibration Matched, DGS400
2-PW, Golden Ram (1980) Tour Grinds, Dynamic S
SW, Ram Troon Grind 58*
Wilson Staff 8813, with a lot of lead tape  LOL

And I played the TaylorMade TP5 ball.  Don't really have any wound balls left.

Conditions were windy, we were a 2 club wind with gusts higher.  It made life interesting, for sure.  Wound up shooting 41/38 for a 79.  Hit the 1 iron four times, hit it well three of them, the fourth was a bit of Mr Snappy, wound up in the left rough.  The Troon Grind was entertaining; no sand shots, but I took a divot the size of Shaq's foot on a 60 yd pitch.  🙂

I'll do the math here:
Gross score - ((slope/113)x(handicap/2))+(72-course rating)
38 - ((125/113)x(7.6/2)+(72-69) = 36.8

So, there we go.  🙂

Great round! I'll be sure to get a leaderboard up this weekend to track everyone's progress. So, I'll apologize for not having it up yet, work had kept me crazy busy, but I'll edit the first post to keep up with it once I get some time at home.

On another note, how did the TP5 do off the driver? I'm planning on playing the Wilson Zip during most of my rounds, but I do have about 4 dozen of these and I do love them and would love to use them at least once.

New air compressor means new grip changes! New blacked out ping grip on the OG slotted Anser. New grips coming for the classics next week. So will be closing my eyes hoping the swinging clubs don’t go flying during the upcoming round 😬

@NRJyzr - Nice round!  I have a Troon Grind as well, and it's been lots of fun to play with.  It definitely takes beaver pelts.

@JohnSmalls - That blacked-out Ping grip is going to look sick on an OG Anser with the sound slot.  If only I could putt with a toe-hang putter.

I don't think I'll be playing a classic round this weekend, but I might put the Hogan 4 or 5 wood in the regular bag.  I basically can't hit anything off the ground that's longer than a 4 iron and keep it on the planet.  Maybe one of those two are the ticket.

I may try a Classic round this week after seeing how I hold up today. Got the 18 hole shootout then right after the 9 and dine with my wife. I do have my lighter Infiniti CBs with FST 90 shafts in the bag today. Went back to the original specs they were built to for me. Hit them pretty decent on the range yesterday. Hit about 60 balls with no pain. Have finally got my legs working and loading which takes stress and torque off my back. That dog will hunt IF I can keep it timed up. Also found another hidden gem in the stash. When John Smalls was here we were messing around in the shop. He found a Cobra Trusty Rusty 56* SW I had forgot about. Picked it up Thursday and like how it sat. took it out and hit 30 balls or so with it. Loved the feel, So the hodgepodge of rusty wedges are in the bag this weekend. Yep if I can get the move going today in the line of fire I may be able to play 9 Monday with the classic stuff

TP5 seems fairly decent off driver.  I've been playing it for a fair bit of time, picked up the practice balls that were mentioned in the forums.  Get good distance with it, doesn't seem to have too much spin, as I'm getting some good roll.  It's definitely not short.

That's meant as an overall comment, not just in my round with the Zing Blondes.

Added comment on my round...  comes with a penalty stroke.  I hit 3w off the tee on the lone par 5 on the back, hooked it left into some water.  I was hitting the 3w to stay short of another small water, the one i hit into was closer.  I used to always hit the 1 iron there, i guess i should have this time, too.  LOL

I had to work again today, so I thought a trip back to the thrift store was in order after getting off. I went back with every intention of buying the Titleist irons, but the set was only a partial. It was in a bag that had other clubs and that gave me the impression that it was a full set. Bummer.

They also had some Wilson Blue Ridge irons, also a partial set. Included with the set was the woods, so I picked them up. I ended up with a 1, 3, and 5 Wilson Blue Ridge Sam Snead edition woods that are just gorgeous. 20201107_184206-01.jpeg.31a6cec6ec3875077d449cf904e1e9b3.jpeg

I'll get more photos tomorrow when it's light outside because the light in my room really doesn't show how nice these are.

When I was standing in line paying for them, a gentleman asked if they were some of the older woods and asked to see one. He proceeded to tell me he used to work for the Arnold Palmer golf company that was located in Ooltewah, TN and we had a very nice conversation about his experience working there. He also told me to visit the headquarters store of this chain of stores, as they carry a lot more clubs. It's not located to far from the house, so I see a field trip in my future.

A question for brother @sirchunksalot....

The formula above has 72 included, but my course is par 71.  Also, should I (could I?) change the calc for the par and course rating of the back nine?  I have the details of the rating and slope for each nine of my course.

Thought I'd ask.   🙂

You can calculate using par for your course, and I think if you have some and ratting details for each 9 you play, I'm cool with that. My course has different ratings for each nine on the USGA database, but usually if I play nine it's the front which rates easier.

I thought of it because my better score came on the back, which is par 35.  In light of that...

38 - ((125/113)x(7.6/2)+(35-34.8) = 34.0

FWIW, my course is Pheasant Acres Golf Course in Corcoran, MN.  It's rated 69.0/122 from the white tees that I played, with the front being 34.2/119, the back is 34.8/125.  Par is 36 front, 35 on back.  There's one par 5 on the back, and the par 3 holes are 175 and 196, from north to south, frequently playing into the wind.  The par 3's on the front are 120 and 126.

In the no one cares category, the disparity is somewhat made up by two of the par 4s on the front, which are 431 and 409.  🙂   Fun little course, I like it for both classic sticks and modern clubs.

Anyway, there's my revised score, and more background than anyone would care to read.  LOL

Picked up some clubs for the challenge.  Bought a set (2-E) of Hogan Director irons (circa 74-79), and 4 Hogan woods; yes 2 drivers).  Not in the greatest condition but should be fun to cleanup and get on the course as I always wanted a set of Hogan clubs.

Short irons have some significant rust,  grips are a bit worn,  and 7 iron has been re-shafted, and grooves are obviously worn.  The 7 iron was re-shafted with another Hogan shaft,  just not same as the shaft bands don't match up. Wood heads have some wear spots through the finish.   I know Bar Keepers Friend is the recommendation for cleaning up the irons.  What is the best way to polish up the woods a little?

I had the putter and initially I will be gaming an old Spaulding TP Mills putter.
