2020 Classic Bag Challenge

Short irons have some significant rust,  grips are a bit worn,  and 7 iron has been re-shafted, and grooves are obviously worn.  The 7 iron was re-shafted with another Hogan shaft,  just not same as the shaft bands don't match up. Wood heads have some wear spots through the finish.   I know Bar Keepers Friend is the recommendation for cleaning up the irons.  What is the best way to polish up the woods a little?  

I had the putter and initially I will be gaming an old Spaulding TP Mills putter. 

 

Oh man, that's a good looking bag and should be spectacular with a little bit of shine. I think you'll be very pleased with the Hogan's.

Well guys I was looking forward to getting started this past weekend.  Yard work took a little longer than expected Saturday so that left Sunday for my first time around.  To make a long story short, I had to self quarantine for 14 days starting Sunday and am scheduled for a covid test Wednesday.  2 weeks +  with no golf.

I got out for my first classic bag round today, I took off work and thought it would be a great time to hit the course. 

Beautiful day, not so beautiful round. I was playing good until the last hole when I proceeded to top five...count em, FIVE balls in the water off the tee. I was finally able to shank a 2 iron into a playable position and end my misery with a 16 on the hole. I didn't have Arccos with me, so I made my own using Google Maps. 

 

I did hit a wedge to three feet and ended with a one putt. 

Shoot a 68 on a course with ratings of 70.4/114 for a total of 56.384.

WHOA those staffs are good looking!

I do appreciate it.  I'm stuck in quarantine through next week whether I test positive or negative.  Honestly at this point I would almost rather have it and be done with it.   I just want to play golf!

Thank you! I'm going to eventually paint fill them, since I've never done it I'm planning on doing a trial run on another club i have to work out any kinks I might encounter.

Yeah, being stuck without being able to play would drive me totally nuts. I hope you at least have a spot you can do some practicing to help with the withdrawal.

Thankfully we do. I can get some good short game work in. But no full swings.  Anybody have a skytrak I can borrow for 2 weeks?

What are your plans for the paint fill?

I'll probably go with just the basic black and red that the irons came in and try to get them back to their original look. I've bought the Citrustrip to remove the old paint and just need to find the time to get by a hobby store to get the paint. This is my plan for our winter shutdown coming up at Christmas, hopefully it'll help keep me from going stir crazy.

At least you saved that 16 with a 1 putt!!  A buddy of mine would say that was like putting whip cream on horsesh...........t  !!      The strategy shift for next round should be to play (or make up)  tees that put you in front of that water on the last hole!

Dude, I feel your pain.  Reminds me of the day I took a 14 on a par 5, hitting several balls OB or into the water.  I may have said bad words.

Nice sticks, though.   Purdy....

I think I made a mistake playing from the green tees instead of playing one set back from the whites. There's supposed to be around 20+ yards difference, but they had them a little closer together than that. 

I'll probably move up to the silvers the next round.

Thanks for pointing this out.  I've been taking myself right out of the competition by playing nines that are par 33.

For folks that don't have separately rated nines, that last part of the equation should probably be (Course Par - Course Rating)/2.  If you're playing a par 72 golf course with a course rating of 68, you should only add two to adjust for the course difficulty when you're playing 9 holes.  You shouldn't have to add four; you only played half the course.

I would suggest the USGA Course Rating database.  I found my course's ratings by accident, when checking to see if the ratings had changed since the printing of an old scorecard I'd had.

Good call.  I knew the two nines on my course varied pretty differently in the rating (I noticed it when I played the front nine two straight evenings), but I didn't know where I could find it until now.  Thanks for the tip!

Having visited recently, I can assure you the surface hasn’t even been tickled...let alone scratched. Stu asked me to post that today. If you think the shop is awesome, you should hear the stories that come with the clubs in the shop.

Sounds like someone needs to put a virtual tour together and have Big Stu narrate what we are seeing.

What John did not tell you is the clubs on the left side arrived after he left here. My fellow club ho and playing partner Bear showed up Tuesday with 10 sets of irons. No he ain't quitting hoeing but he ran out of room. Among the sets 99 Apex Plus which are really messed up just checked the 8 iron and it is 8* jacked. The really shining set so to speak is a set of 2014 TM TP CBs with Steel Fiber shafts which are light which should help my back. Another set is a set of Homna G1-X GI CBs which lol match my driver. Having to let the water drain out of the shafts. Bad rain the next 2 days so I have plenty time to tune
