What are some of your favorite golf books that you have purchased?

Recommended Posts

Love golf books.  Couple of my favorites: All of the Bob Rotella series.  All of the Pelz books, though the putting ones are a little too in the weeds and can cause you to over think.

One that is not specifically golf:  The Talent Code - about how to be good at things, mostly sports.  It is very interesting.

And two good fictional ones: Seven days in Utopia and Johnny's US Open by Dr. David Cook.

Cheers

Tigger

Bob Toski ….. While I read Hogan’s 5 lessons firstthe real eye opener for me was Toski’s 1978, How to Become a Complete Golfer. I believe it was the first book containing tips and drills to help you improve, not just the swing theory of a famous tour professional. Only one I remember now is chipping over a golf bag. Toski was so popular, especially his breakthrough club head redirection, the PGA used his books and theories in their PGA School.

Unfortunately, I loaned my book to a golf pal, and never saw it again.

Might sound sacrilegious to some, but while Hogan’s book certainly has its place on any golfers book shelf, that book might as well be called “how to not go left”.  Point being, really not the best prescription for most.
Sounds like Toski’s was a good one…

... Or as we called it "Hogans never hit another hook" manual. I have quite a few golf books but these are my favorites and I go back to them again and again:

Toski/Love was my first golf book and still holds up.

If You are a DLIII fan you will love Every Step I Take and if you are not a fan, you will become one.

While not a big Leadbetter guy, his book breaks down many of the great swings very well. (pre Tiger)

Freddie's book may not help you with your swing but as always there are some great thoughts in it that you might be able to incorporate into your swing.

And as a Zen kinda guy I gained more from Bagger Vance than any golf book I have ever read. Golf in the Kingdom is also a very inspirational read.

Hogan even admitted his swing was meant to fight his tendency to hook the ball.

Penick’s Little Read Book was enjoyable because I grew up with the people he talks about, like Crenshaw and Kite. But the biggest impact was his teaching techniques, specifically not overloading the student with more than one change to their swing. As they master one change, you build on another.

... When I first started teaching an old "country boy" North Carolina instructor in his early 90's told me "When your givin' out infer-mayshun, do it by tha teespoon not tha shovul" It was great advice and became the cornerstone of my teaching.

"Golf Anatomy" - the second edition by Craig Davies. I fell in love with this masterpiece. Similarly, I am in love with plays, novels and dramas. Do you have some recommendations?

Oh, I also like novels and plays with some interesting messages. I recently read my favorite story, "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry. While people may have to defer or put off realizing their dreams at a later time, they can still make their dreams a reality. I understood this message after checking on the service an essay on A Raisin in the Sun with explanations of the main ideas from the most excellent writing experts. I like reading free essays on that source since it facilitates getting the subject. I once found a paper about a golf book, so this site impresses me.

"Be A Player"  by Pia Nilsson & Lyn Marriott. The Jolly Fat Man dropped it under the Tree at Christmas Time.

Written by a couple of smart ladies who got me thinking about Vision 54 only personally changed to Vision 84 knowing I could make some Money off The Whiners!!

Yep; Agree on: Bob Rotella, Dave Stockton, Ben Hogan & Harvey Penick.

Best ever golf reading (non-instruction)

- A Course Called Ireland (Tom Coyne) - over many months he walks the perimeter of Ireland playing popular links courses as well as some hidden gems; local color & people (fantastic)

- The Match (Mark Frost) an epic Pro’s (Hogan & Nelson) vs Amateurs (Venturi & Ward) match at Cypress Point in the ‘50’s; plus personal history of those 4

A few others have said it, but I'll echo "Golf in the Kingdom" is genuinely beautiful - I'm nearly done, and can imagine it being a book I'll revisit frequently.  I've added a bunch of the ones suggested above to my Wish List so my wife doesn't have to feel like she has to buy me a new club for birthdays 😉

Driver - PXG 0811 XF - Gen 5, 9 degrees (+1 setting), Oban Devotion TR 65 04
3/5 Wood - Cobra LTDx Max (Blue Colorway)
Utility - Caley X01 Driving Iron (3 = 18*)
Irons (5-PW) - Caley 01T
Wedges (48, 52, 56, 60) - Indi Wedges FLX 48 / ATK 52, 56, 60
Putter - L.A.B. Directed Force 2.1 - 65*
Ball - Chrome Tour Triple-Track
