2020 Official Member Review: Ben Hogan Golf ComPany-VKTR+, UiHi and GS53 FW

Recommended Posts

Got a little question for my fellow 3 wood testers. What are you guys looking for during testing? An alternative tee ball club? Something to reach the green in two? Or maybe a little bit of both? For me, I think it's both but mainly for the tee when I need a little bit more control over the ball on tighter fairways.

Have you played it before? I imagine if you get along with the UiHi it would be an awesome club to have at Bandon. I've played in some other coastal conditions in Florence, but Bandon was a different animal. Low and controlled off the tee is a big advantage.

For me it is something that helps me reach the green in 2 on long par 4's (or where I duff my drive lol) and on short par 5's (never have had an eagle opportunity on a putt). I hit my 3H fairly well but on my best days i get about 220 out of it so still comes up short on most par 5's and long par 4's. I will use the 3W on tee shots for positioning.

This will be my first time! Had a trip cancelled in April and my wife was gracious enough to let me go on a buddy trip for New Years.  I'm hoping this club gives me an edge since everyone else on the trip has been going for years.

For the courses I play, a 3 wood is a position club off the tee.  I rarely will use it to go for a green as I’m looking for about 260-270 yards out of it.  My 20* driving iron goes about 240 and my driver about 290-300.  I would want this club to fill that gap.  I’m also looking for accuracy.  I’m using this club to find fairways when it’s too tight or to layup to a number on the shorter par 4’s.

In the same boat as far as using it as a position club (wish I could hit it as far as you though LOL). But we'll see that may change based on how I get along with it.

I use mine in both situations. I can hit a pretty good knockdown with it off of the turf or take it high. I use my current 3 wood off of the tee a lot at my course. Its very tight and I need a lot of control over where the ball finishes.

Since I started collecting data for this test, I'm driving it about 245 off of the tee. I'm currently hitting the green with about 30% of my shots from about 235 out, and 70% are in a 15yd distance variance length wise.

I also found out I top 12% of my fairway wood shots. 😬

That's why I dropped my 3 wood for a 17* hybrid which I never top. Ends up being longer on average. Sometimes miss having the wood as an option off the tee though.

Just got a fedex package, but was an Oban Gold that I ordered for my G410 driver. maybe next week.

Thankfully I rarely top it, more likely to shank it though 🤣

I actually use a 18* (recently lofted it down from 19*) hybrid in addition to a 3 wood, my current 3 wood is old as dirt and is at 16* so hopefully the stronger lofted GS53 will provide better gapping. Cannot wait to get it in hand, the shipping notification could not come any faster

I hear ya. Playing a fun track tomorrow near the house that really sits up well for a driving iron. Of course in testing you could the UiHi on every non par 3, but this course gives plenty of opportunities without forcing it too much. Could play with score in mind as not a practice round. I'll come back to this course when I do have the Hogan UiHi in hand.

#2 - 313 yard par 4 with a waste area in front of the green. 225 in the fairway is a great shot.

#3- 580 yard par 5. Plays as a 3 shot hole. Could advance the ball with driving iron on second shot.

#6 - 191 yard uphill par 3. Normally would hit a 23* hybrid, but would try a punchy knockdown shot.

#7 - 596 yard pay 5. Again a 3 shot whole, second shot over water. Need a reliable club to advance the ball.

#8 - 210 yard par 3. Water on the right. Probably take some of it, open it up a bit, and see if I can get it to land soft at all. Good test to hold greens.

#9 - 375 yard par 4, but with water right center at about 250. Driver is risky, so the UiHi will be perfect.

#13 - 508 yard par. Can reach in two. Will try to run the UiHi up there on the second shot.

#14 - 374 par 4, but near 90 dog leg left. Fairway runs out at 250, and you cant cut the corner or draw it because there is a huge 80 yard waste area guarding the green. Straight 225 is perfect.

#16 - 419 yard par 4. Hardest hole on the course. Large waste area 240 out and the fairways narrows as you approach that distance. 200 yards is has the best landing area but usually you push for 220-230 just to shorten the second shot which is uphill to a narrow green. Should be a good hole for the UiHi. Depending on the wind, could even hit it twice.

#17 - 525 yard par 5. Fairway curves left the entire way to a very well protected green. Forces me to play as a 3 shot par 5, but UiHi on the second should set up a short wedge in.

ok to keep this thread live 3 UiHi testers. What are you looking to get out of this test? I know with my home course if I trusted my current 3 Hybrid to not balloon into the air I would probably play it on more holes than I currently do.

Do you have a lot of opportunities at your home course to game a 3 I/H?

Currently I do not have a Home course.  The 2 courses that I play most of the time are both Links style, narrow fairways that are tree lined.  I find the need for anything but driver on almost all the holes.  The 3 UIHI I am hoping to be the perfect fit.  Testing whether this is going to be the club of choice.  I find my iron play is stronger than that of my driver or hybrid.

I use my current 3h multiple times during a round .. I will use it to lay up on some holes that are tight and I dont want to risk Driver on ... my current 3h is my best club I can use it off the tee box, fairway, rough ... I can't wait to see how the ben hogan matches up

Just some quick numbers from the range yesterday with my current gamer 3H

Average swing speed of 89.5 mph ( converted from 40 m/s...my launch monitor is JDM so it only gives me metric swing and ball speed but carry distance in yards go figure)

Average carry 195 yards (usually total distance with roll out comes to 210-220 for me)

I am hoping that the Hogan 3W comes in between this and my driver

Just some quick numbers from the range yesterday with my current gamer 3H

Average swing speed of 89.5 mph ( converted from 40 m/s...my launch monitor is JDM so it only gives me metric swing and ball speed but carry distance in yards go figure)

Average carry 195 yards (usually total distance with roll out comes to 210-220 for me)

I am hoping that the Hogan 3W comes in between this and my driver

My average driver speed was 45 m/s which equates to 100 mph. Fastest I was able to get was 46.7 m/s = 104.5 mph. Good to have a launch monitor like this to track improvements.

ok to keep this thread live 3 UiHi testers. What are you looking to get out of this test? I know with my home course if I trusted my current 3 Hybrid to not balloon into the air I would probably play it on more holes than I currently do.

Do you have a lot of opportunities at your home course to game a 3 I/H?

Honestly I could probably use it off every par 4 on the executive course I play.  I'm really looking to see if I can get a little better distance than my 4 iron with the same control.  I tend to hook my 3 hybrid, off the tee especially, so if this can have a similar carry distance and more control I'd be thrilled.
