putter length

Chip Strokes

Recommended Posts

i was doing some putting drills today using my sand wedge, and choked down on the grip to where i felt most comfortable and realized my grip was way shorter than my putter length.

i currently game my putter at 34.5” and was holding the wedge at around 32.5-33”

is there a point where a putter is too short? or is this something that’s purely comfort and feel?

It's all about what is comfortable for you based on your stance, grip, and stroke type. Not to mention the physical stuff like height and wrist to floor.

Michelle Wie used to putt fully bent over with her back parallel to the ground. Her putter had to have been less than 30".

Comfort and feel. It's about what best allows you to have a smooth, consistent, comfortable swing. Think of it similar to blade vs. mallet putters. There are tangible benefits, but you can easily rock other types and make it work.

My putter is a 33 inch blade, but for fun I've gamed other people's putters which ranged up to 36 inches for full rounds and been fine.

Rag tag bag, but it does the job.

Taylormade R1 driver.

Ping G400 3 wood.

Cleveland Halo Launcher 3 hybrid.

Cleveland CBX launcher irons (5-PW).

Assorted wedges (48, 52, 58).

Odyssey White Hot Pro 2.0 putter.

thanks, i’m 5’10” with long arms, so letting them be a little more straightened out felt a lot more comfortable

thanks for the input. i started feeling a little crowded with the longer putter. i’ll see how it goes practicing with the shorter length

if you are going to toy around with putter lengths I would advise that you toy around with putter weighting as well. I had a 35in putter... cut it down to 34.. and then 33 and the weight of the club head is way off now. Might add some lead tape to the head to make up for the change.

thanks for the heads up. i found the “sweet spot” for where i’m most comfortable gripping the putter.

i decided to mark it with some tape for now and play a few rounds choking down. if i like the results, i’ll cut it down after figuring it out if it works

Thats what i did on mine before cutting it. I recently just added lead tape to the bottom of my putter and I got the feel back that I was missing.

But at the end of the day it is YOUR putter. No need to cut it if you like how it feels and you can drain putts.

Only reason I cut mine to be honest was because one of my friends said I shouldn’t be choking down so much that I’m near the shaft. I used the letters on my putter grip so I knew how to hold it consistently every time. thankfully the lead tape saved me from having to purchase or look for another putter.

I found out by sheer accident that the shaft length on my Byron Anser 2 model , Byron experimental and PING center shafted piper C are all different sizes in order for me to find the sweet spot consistently.

absolutely.

im gonna try the choked-down length on the course for a few rounds.

the only reason i’m considering cutting it down is that my pistol grip has a curve at the end and i like that feel in my left hand
