Fitting Quandry

Recommended Posts

So a couple months ago I was Tour Van fit into a set of PXG 0211 clubs. I really like them for the most part. Specs were +1/4" and 2.5-3* upright in lie. Yesterday I went to a trackman session at a my local course. The pro that runs it also does fittings and i recently told him about the zipcore testing being standard specs and how I was just fitted for irons. He ended up statically measuring me (first time I have had this done). I forgot the numbers, but he basically told me from standard length, I need to have clubs 1 1/2" longer and a flatter lie angle than the 3* my set is currently at. I am now more confused and frustrated as I dropped a fair amount on the PXGs. Have you had instances where you get different results from different fitters? Is there benefit to playing clubs to short? I already struggle enough with my game and now I don't know what to think. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Remind me, how did The Tour Van assess length and lie angle?

1.5" long sounds pretty long. Are you tall? Note, height isn't necessarily a good indicator, but just curious.

Assessed lie angle by divot pattern. Length he just said he kept it short for me to be more athletic. That fitting was a trackman fitting.

I am only 6' but my wrist to floor measurement was long, i want to say 38 1/4" or something like that.

Assuming you aren't seeing a specific problem with your current clubs, go with your actual fitting not static measurements taken by someone quickly.

Divot pattern is the way everyone seems to recommend fitting lie angles and from everything I've read, + 1 1/2 is extremely long and almost no one is fitted into any thing over +1" unless there are very specific circumstances. I can't imagine that any competent fitter would actually order you clubs that long based solely on a static fitting.  Giving the pro the benefit of the doubt, I'd assume that he would come to a different conclusion if you actually went through the full fitting with him.

Thank you for that. I do trust my fitter as he has fit several top pros. The pro I did my session with it seemed to be more analytical and up with the science. The only benefit i could see to getting longer length is more potential distance, but i do worry my dispersion may go through the roof.

I echo everything in this post 1000%. Couldn’t have said it better.

Did either the fitter or the pro have an iron in the length they recommended for you to hit?   I suspect i know the answer from the pro 😎

Also, I would trust the fitting from Ben. Although its possible he could have misfit you, he is one of the best out there. He may not be as well known, but he is up there at TXG level quality.

Seemed strange to me that at 6' and long arms that you would need longer clubs.  With that upright lie angle, you would tend to lose spine angle with long clubs.

I would guess that your wrist to floor measurement would be more in the 36" range.

If you go into the Sub 70 website and select a set of irons. There is a button for "Get Fit". If you enter your height and a wrist to floor measurement it will tell you how much longer the clubs need to be. In my case at 6' with a wrist to floor measurement of 36" it states I should add 1/4" to my club length. This is actually what was fitted for me and working perfectly.  Unless you have "T" Rex arms + 1-1/2"  sounds like someone measured wrong.

Ya, i have done the Sub70 get fit and  even with 38.25" I get +1/4". yet the chart i just posted says otherwise. I need to just get out of my head.

80% of golfers fall into a standard length. I would start by double checking your wrist to floor measurement. Usually tall people have longer arms, short people have shorter arms so the 80% rule works. You could be shorter armed but the difference seems a bit high. Too long a club will hurt you more than one that is a little short. The correct fit is important.

Who's your fitter?  I was fitted at Redtail 8 years ago, and thinking of heading back when I have good weather through the Gorge.  I'm open to other fitters in the area.

Too long a club will hurt you more than one that is a little short. The correct fit is important.

I know the WTF measurement is the usual approximation for club length, and it's very convenient for online fitting by club manufacturers, but IMO peoples' swings are so different, and with it, spine angles.  Not a fan of static measurements.

Who's your fitter?  I was fitted at Redtail 8 years ago, and thinking of heading back when I have good weather through the Gorge.  I'm open to other fitters in the area.

Who fit you at Redtail?

My first set of clubs i hard were retrofitted to me at Birdie Finish golf in Oregon City (TM Speedblades and my current Driver/3W setup)

My new PXGs were fit by Ben Giunta (former fitter for NIKE back in the Tiger and Rory days) who has a trailer at Pumpkin Ridge, although he is probably packing up his van and heading to his other course location in AZ until March since the weather has turned.

Nick Mabry (formerly at Redtail, now at Meriwether National near Hillsboro, hence why I asked who fit you there) was the pro that later did the static measurements on me when I went for my trackman collection for wedge testing and noted how short my clubs seemed and gave me a tip to widen my stance.

I do feel my current length of clubs are fine, it is just my head is spinning looking at charts based on static measurements and how crappy my ball striking round was on Sunday. I just want the right setup for me and I feel like I am on the verge of a mental golf breakdown.

I looked up an old email, and I was fit by Jason (don't know the last name) in 2012; he's no longer there; was fitter for Ping i20 irons and RBZ 3W/hybrids.  Then in 2014 Jason Burnett, Master Club Fitter, booked me with Tom Kostelecky.  Don't remember either one actually, so much not have been memorable; SLDR and Ping G25 drivers, bought the SLDR.

I did stop by Birdie Finish a few of years ago before playing Stone Creek to try out Recoil shafts but they didn't have the one I was interested in at the time.

Thanks for the info.

@dlow206thanks for posting Ben’s site on the wedges grinding thread. I read more of his testimonials. I am now more reassured.
