Help! Is this scotty cameron real or fake?

Hey all. I recently bought this club off Facebook marketplace and it wasn't cheap. I'm now wondering if I've been sold a fake.  The guy selling it also bought it second hand so had no reason to believe it was.

It's in pristine condition, looks like it's never been used. There was no mention of whether or not it had been refinished.

It looks the part mostly but the face has been made entirely smooth and I know traditionally Scotty's have the characteristic milling. I'd appreciate some opinions and this is my first Scotty and can't seem to find anything on the web.  It came with a head cover that certainly looks authentic.

Is this just a good counterfeit? Have I been mugged off?

None of those mean fake. Hard to know if it is a fake without side by side comparison to a known real putter. Fakes usually have slightly different fonts and placement of the wording.

Agree with all of the above, can be almost impossible to tell.

We had a fake come into the store to be cut down. We were only able to tell it was a fake because A) the head was wrapped in plastic which we had never seen from a scottie (think box set plastic on the head) and the grip smelled bad and had a different font. Outside of that it felt similar and looked identical.

Grab a hex wrench and see if those screws budge.  Real Scotty's have real screws from this vintage.

This is from the Scotty Cameron website archive. The smooth finish is suspect. Did you ask the seller if he was the original owner? And, how did he get the smooth finish?

If you replace the grip with a traditionally red Scotty grip that is correct then it should be an easy flip.

The owner bought it second hand too, apparently it had been refurbished prior to him purchasing it. He says he therefore has no proof.

There's a couple of big names in the refurbishing industry that do the Tiger smooth finish for Scotties.

Don't think he's being dishonest about not knowing if it's authentic. He seemed fairly sure of the person who owned it before that, but looks like there's no way of knowing.

Is that epoxy on the butt of the grip?  It looks like hardware store epoxy which is kind of alarming as it obviously shouldn't be there and implies to me that maybe it was used to install that grip. No reputable refurbisher would use epoxy and I would think that anyone who had bought a real scotty would know enough not to install a grip using it.

Edit: I couldn't place it before but looking again, I'm pretty certain that is standard gorilla glue. I certainly hope it isn't or you're going to have a hell of a time replacing that grip in the future.

I CERTAINLY am no Scotty expert.  However, as I look at the cavity, it appears that there is material left around the edges of the cavity back.  Doesn't seem to be "Scotty level" quality of casting or finishing to my (untrained) eye.  Simply my observation.  I am usually skeptical.

"Where'd it go?"  "Right in the Lumberyard..."

It may be some type of glue. I wasn’t that concerned since it looks like it was used to fix a tear in the butt end. Looks like when they put on the grips they pushed down too Hard and the shaft ripped through the rubber.

I'll second that opinion.  The grip looks like a weekend warrior job.  This is a curious piece, I am interested to see the result.

Anyone smarter than me, aren't there serial numbers on the shaft somewhere?  Perhaps beneath the grip?

it does look that way now that you point it out. They must have used some serious force putting on that grip!

I’ve done it before. Usually broke through after hitting the bottom of my bag a few times.

If you are willing to pay a few bucks to find out for sure, you can send it to Scotty Cameron for authentication.  You can also pay to have it resorted to original specs or have them customize it.

I bought a used SC putter about 10 years ago for $50.  Had it certified and sold it a couple months ago for more then $50.

I'll see if I can find the links. I bought a fake-Scotty putter 2 years ago. It was a gamble, and I got it for $35 bucks. I figured I couldn't go wrong for that.

Well it did turn out to be fake. The first thing I was told is  "A magnet won't stick to a real Scotty".

Yeah, mine's magnetic.

My Son has the real deal, and mine feels 95% as good as his.

My putting improved 500% with this fake.

We laugh and call it my (Scooty Cameroon ).

I'll see if I can find the links. They gave several details and pics.

Always chasing different clubs
