Do 70% of your shots come from only 30% of your clubs?

Scott Fawcett would probably say if you need to hit driver on par 3s that you should be hitting it everywhere because you won't hit it far enough to go OB (and you don't want to hit driver from the fairway after you layup off the tee). I only say this because my wife says the same thing... Then will randomly decide not to hit a driver on a 150 yard par 3, which is how far she hits her driver (or less).

Our bunkers are atrocious right now.  They don't drain well as it is, and since COVID hit, they basically stopped maintaining them.  So they're either wet, or rock hard.  Bad news.  She's either leaving it in the bunker or bouncing the club off the sand and blading it 30 yards over the green.  Otherwise I'd have her try to thread the needle.

Golf is putter, wedge, driver. That's mostly what you need to practice.

And with the putter, dont be too fooled by the percentage of strokes. People say "Oh you hit driver 14 times and putt 34 times, which is more important." Well, I am not going to dismiss the value of the putter but all 14 of those drivers really have a huge impact on your score. Of those 34 putts, how many are tap-ins that you probably picked up anyway? How many are over 15 feet where your expectation is to 2 putt and you did? What you really need to practice is that 4 ft - 12 ft range where you can really make birdies and save pars, or bogeys. Those are your 20 or so crucial putts.

totally concur.

putter is most, as people have to use it almost twice every hole...

all the while wishing it would only have to be used once per hole...

Driver is used 14 times.   5 wood used as 2nd shot on par 5's and long par 4's.

52* wedge is most used, followed by normal wedge.

This certainly applies to me also. I'm so bad with my irons lately that my wedges are probably my most played irons.

This is interesting.  I do not track how many times I use each club but thinking about it probably would be my driver, putter and wedges.  I think the wedges get used so much since I tend not to hit a ton of greens in reg.  That leads to all those short wedge shots around the green.

For me it is my Driver, 3W, Putter, wedges next.  I may change my practice for sure.

The stat makes perfect sense, and I think its importance is based on the gear golfers pay attention to and get fit for. While nearly all golfers love the big dog and plenty will schedule a fitting, the majority place less importance on selecting the right putter or wedges - especially wedges.

Ooh, very interesting! I took my last 50 rounds (many of those are 9-hole)

While the 50-degree was down the list a ways, if you just use the metric of "wedges" then yes, I've got 70% of my shots with 5 clubs. This tells me that in both my practice and in my fitting, I need to make sure these clubs are spot-on. (Though the fact that I'm as likely to hit a 5-iron as a 50-degree wedge is interesting...) On the other extreme, I've always been frustrated by the 'hole' in the top end of my bag. Sometimes carrying 3-iron, sometimes 2-hybrid (which I haven't used at all in the last 50 rounds). I geared down from 3-wood to 4-wood to try and help and as you can see, I've leaned on it a fair bit, which is helping, especially on the courses I play that often have elevated greens more suitable for a wood than long iron.

The thing that drives me nutz worse than the 'safe club snapper' is hitting the safe yardage club to keep from going into a hazard and I flush it & the Hand of God comes down and carries the ball 25 yards farther than I normally hit it or it bounces forever....right into the water.   😠

The approach to 18 at my home course is like this. The smart play is take an extra club and let the elevated green the slopes back-to-front do its magic. And the last two times I have done this, I've absolutely flushed it and flown the green entirely, a distance that Arccos categorizes as beyond my 'smart range.'

I was going to say it would depend on the course, but now that I think about it, i don't think it matters. Having to play longer approaches will typically mean more greenside wedge shots. So I think it kind of balances out regardless. Only thing I can see changing is possibly the driver to another preferred tee club.
