Hello Fellow Spies! I can’t thank the MODs enough for choosing me to be tester and for all of the great discussion in the thread over the past few months!

Background:

This is my 2nd opportunity to do a MGS review. I had the privilege to the do the Motore X review last year (Motore X Review), so I’m still new at this and any feedback is always appreciated!

I’m a high school teacher and boys and girls golf coach at Franklin High School in Michigan. Go Pats! I’m about a 5 handicap who needs to get out and play more (but don’t we all?), but with 2 kids and coaching, my own practice time is limited. I thought I would get to play/practice more being out with the high schoolers, but it never seems to work out.  I’m working on getting my 8 and 5 year old into the game as well, with some decent success!  image.png.74f157ca75ccab30f6716c5a9b73c834.png

I worked at a top 100 golf shop for 6 years (yes while still teaching; those were some lean years) and now I work some demo days as a tech rep for Wilson (if you couldn’t tell by the all the clubs in my signature).

I harbored grandiose visions of my players coming down after school and pounding balls into the net for a few hours a couple of days a week. I thought that I might even have to create a sign-up sheet with specific hitting times because they couldn’t get enough practice time.  Needless to say with some shifts between live schooling and virtual schooling throughout the year, these visions remained pipe dreams.

First Impressions

image.png.d7e1ec6f817cbe675bba78ae73823247.png

The first thing I noticed about the box was the heft.  It came in a wide, but thin box, so I was expecting the net to be pretty light. On the contrary, it felt like there was some quality to it. The carry bag is a nice touch that I plan on using a lot more once the boys season starts because we don’t have a range at our home course or many of the league courses.  My only complaint was that there were no clear directions on how to attach the chipping net. But @Sirchunkalot came through with a nice clip on that front!

Quality of Components

I was hoping to have a lot more shots on the net as I mentioned earlier, but this net held up to everything I threw at it. I can get it moving on occasion (I can top out at around 120) and the net and mat had no problems. I had multiple kids shank some full speed drivers directly onto the side poles and, while the net understandably collapsed, they went right back into place and the net was working again in seconds.  During my early sessions, I made the mistake of hitting some 60-degree wedges and found out, the hard way, that the roof attachment is both effective and durable. I’ll be honest that I never had to find out how durable the side netting was. I feel that if you’re a decent to good ball striker, which I can be at times, you won’t need to worry about the side netting at all.

9/10

Ease of Use

image.png.b74634c24b10f3876d76159673277d68.png

Once I got this thing up, I really haven’t had to take it down. It’s up and it stays up for the most part. I think that it will start to travel more in the next few weeks. I think that I’m the only one who was using this on carpet, but there’s actually Velcro underneath the mat that helps it stay stable and in the same place! That was a nice little unexpected bonus.  I think that the target is a nice touch.  While you can’t see ball flight, you can use the target to check to see if you hit it in the same spot or, if you’re fancy, if it’s launching in the correct “window”.

10/10

Basic Characteristics

The ball return system is top notch.  I have the net right in front of the wall and I was fully expecting the net to give a little too much with the driver and for the ball to come back at me a little hot.  It never happened once. Whether it was the driver, long irons, short irons or wedges, the net gathered the shot and it came back nicely to the bottom.  There’s a nice lip there to make sure that the balls all gather and don’t run back into your feet while hitting.

Driver Swings

The white stripe on the bottom doesn’t do much for me. I think that I could use it as an alignment, but I’d rather make sure that my mat is in the correct spot to give me all 3.5’ to each side in case I miss a few.

I didn’t really use the chipping net as much as I wanted to.  It’s tough to do in room with a lower ceiling from any distance.  I’m hoping this gets more use outside at team practices. Also, I would have liked to see the chipping net have a couple of holding sections.  The very center will catch and hold balls, but a chip an inch or two outside of center just runs to the bottom of the mat like a shot that missed the chipping net all together.

16/20

On course performance

image.png.453a0937605a59b8e9674e1efc571d6b.png  image.png.9ab1aeac01f58e020de1ff3662e8d58d.png  image.png.d4117100109fcaf79ca4f7f98ec5bea1.png

I’m not sure exactly what to put here. I definitely saw my ball striking in a couple of simulator rounds go up, but I did start to develop a little over the top motion, but I attribute that to the Superspeed Golf I was trying.  I’ve noticed some struggles with the shorter irons my only two times out this year, but I’ve been hitting the mid and long irons really well.  I think the short iron struggles are more from hitting off mats for months instead of grass and I certainly can’t fault the hitting net for that.

28/30

Miscellaneous

Nothing extra really to add here.  It looks sharp and compact, so it ticks all the boxes in those departments as well as the performance ones.

10/10

Keep it or trade it?

Not a chance! I’m hoping as school gets back to normal next year that this net becomes all that I hoped it could be. I don’t know of many high school teams in my area that have a nice, designated indoor hitting area and I hope the kids realize how good they have it! Not to mention a buddy just gave me boxes of old balls to use in there!

20/20

Conclusion

This net was highly rated by MGS and I can see why. There really isn’t anything else that I would want this net to do. If you’ve got some space and want to get some work in, I can’t recommend this net enough!

Final Score: 93/100

Spornia SPG-7 Official Forum Member Review

Once again, a BIG shout out to Golfspy and Spornia!  A little about myself,  I'm 68 years old and my handicap usually varies between a 8 -10. I've been playing for 33 years and try to get out 2-3 times a week during our April - November season. I've only owned one hitting net and that was a old Callaway net I bought at a garage sale for 9 bucks. It was such a pain to put up and take down I finally ended up giving it to goodwill when I couldn't sell it at our own garage sale. I had never considered getting another one until I read about the Spornia and entered the contest.

First Impression

It was much more compact than I thought it would be. Packaged nicely with good instructions but I have to admit this net was so easy to put up I didn't read them until after I had the net up. (Isn't that what we real men do?)😁

Quality

From the moment I pulled this net out of the box I knew it was a quality product. Netting was very heavy. You just knew you had a quality product.

Ease of use

I'm not sure how anyone could make a hitting net any easier than this to put up unless it just sprang to the open position when you pulled it out of the cover. I'm guessing it took about 3-4 minutes to put up or take down.

Hitting Balls

This net will take anything you want to give it. I left it set up from day one and hit balls nearly everyday to some extent. The way the ball comes back to the front of the net is a fantastic design. The only negative I can say about the net is every once in a while if you hit a low ball it will get stuck behind the outside net. Not a big deal to retrieve it though by just reaching around the back of the net and flip the ball back.

Final Thoughts

If I would have had to pay full retail for this net it still would have been one of the best purchases I've made. I look forward to this net making my winters much shorter and enjoyable for a long time. If there's a better hitting net than the Spornia at any price I'd like to see it. Courses have just opened and I can already see the improvement in my ball striking after just one round.

P.S. Sorry for the short review but Sirchunks review was so good I didn't want to be redundant .

Hey Spies!
Thanks to MGS and Spornia for this amazing opportunity!
So a little background about myself:
My name is Micah, and I live in SLC, Utah. Although not unfamiliar with golf, I started playing in 2015 and bought my 1st set of clubs in 2016, shortly after getting married. I’ll be 40 this year and my wife and I are D.I.N.K’s, (dual-income no kids) so that leaves plenty of time for my golf obsession. I play 2-3 rounds a week, and practice 4, sometimes 5 days a week on top of that. I’m down to a 2.7 handicap (according to arccos) and am a constant equipment tinkerer and certified club ho. I’ve always considered myself to be a strong iron player, but arccos says that’s the weakest part of my game, with my driving and putting actually carrying my scoring average.  So being selected for this test could be just what my iron game needs!
I hit a lot of balls; at the range, and in my garage. My old net is a 7ft Callaway net that can’t seem to actually hold the golf balls I hit into it(my poor walls) . My “lab” consists of my net, artificial turf, my swing caddie sc200 and my iphone on a tri-pod. Plenty for this wannabe golf instructor to coach himself right out of the game…image.png.3486aa419c2b34d5d162946319c07a92.png

1st Impressions
This net took all of 7 minutes to un-box and set up; it’s truly that easy. The components are well-made, and the construction is solid. While both the spornia net and my old net are 7 ft wide, the Spornia feels more compact; so much so I felt compelled to move closer to it after my first swing missed the net entirely!

Quality of Components 10/10
This net is thoughtfully made; from the side nets to the chipping visor, this design is spot on. It even collects/holds your golf balls after each shot, so no more chasing them around the garage! What makes this net superior to every net I’ve owned is the impact target; having a target of this size and quality means that the likelihood of you wearing a hole in the actual netting(something I’ve done to 2 nets in 5 years) is almost zero! The bonus chipping net is just a cherry on top; easy to put up and take down,  and adjustable to accommodate both chips and pitches. The top visor holds your flops and wedge shots very well too. The poles are sturdy and can withstand the occasional hosel rocket with ease. The storage bag comes in handy since this net is so easy to put up and take down. My old net drove my wife crazy because it was so hard to put up that I’d leave it up in the garage all season long. No worries with the Spornia, it stows conveniently behind our golf bag rack.

Ease of Use 10/10
Trust me when I tell you this net is breeze to put up and take down.  If you plan on using it primarily indoors like me, you could just as easily take the support poles out, fold it in half, and lean it against your garage wall, or behind a storage shelf.  Set-up from the storage bag takes less than 4 minutes, perfect for backyard use, or even taking it to a park for our apartment dwellers. I spent more time threading the chipping visor supports thru than anything else.

Basic Characteristics 19/20
There’s a lot to love about this net; ease of use, compact profile, storage, etc. That aside, what puts this net over the top is the impact target, the ball retention net and the bonus chipping target. The design is just well thought out: the sloped net stops you from having to dig balls out of the net, the retention system collects them for you, and the huge impact target takes the impact, keeping the netting sturdy in case of an amazingly errant shot.  Being able to practice from home and set up and take down quickly make this net worth its weight in gold. If you have a personal launch monitor and good camera on your phone, you basically have your own golf studio! All my “lab work” has me more excited than ever to conquer my 2021 golf goals.

On Course Performance 26/30
I swing pretty hard, and this net is up to the challenge.  Driver, 7 iron, or wedge, this net takes all comers. https://youtube.com/shorts/7yjlhF3e8DE
image.png.610d3553e654528191787fd6253820c6.png
The only downside I can see is not being able to watch your ball flight; but if you’ve got a camera on you while you swing, you can discern direction from where the ball impacts the target. If you hit as many balls as I do, or have a family or team of golfers, you may have to replace the impact net sooner than others, but we’re still talking years down the road.
I think using the net outdoors might add to the wear and tear on it, but for indoor users I’d imagine the net looking pristine for years. For those of us actively working on a swing change, or just general improvement, I can say that having this net at home helped me improve. Pouring rain? Dumping snow? Not trying to drive to the range in rush hour traffic? Course closed due to Covid? No problem; net is up in 4 minutes or less, and you can get your grind going. I realize $220 is on the high end for a hitting net, but this beauty will definitely pay for itself over time. $10 per large bucket when you practice as much as me adds up, plus I’d rather hit the same ball I play when I practice. https://youtube.com/shorts/rAxzEmFwfSs https://youtube.com/shorts/gmJ_HipqVQE

Miscellaneous 10/10
My net was well packaged for shipping, is a breeze to put up and take down, and is well-made. Add in the innovative features like the sloped net for ball return, the side netting, and the chipping visor; I couldn’t be happier with this net.

Keep or Trade? 20/20
Nobody better lay a finger on my SPG-7 net; it is a game changer sure to help me reach my golfing goals. Being able to practice this well at home is truly a game-changer and can help the busiest of us improve in the limited time they have. And not putting dozens of golf ball sized holes in the drywall of your garage is sure to help your resale value.
Conclusion:
The sticker price may be higher than some, but you absolutely get what you pay for with this net.  I would recommend this net to anyone who wants to be able to practice almost anywhere, at a moment’s notice.

Final Score 95 out 100

Oh, do have a question for whenever testing gets underway... If you got the chipping basket, how do you find that works?

That's a very good question, and the chipping basket option is one that sets Spornia apart from other nets I've seen.

Something arrived today...20201218_170658-01.jpeg.e5905cb950b11a09e6c3d5b7872ccd11.jpeg

Unfortunately, I had to swing by the grocery store after work and was only able to take it out of the box before dark. Hopefully I can get it up and give it a practice run tomorrow after work and start taking pictures and video of the setup and take down.

I also ordered the Dura Pro hitting mat they sell as part of a package with the net in order to include some thoughts on it for anyone who might be looking to buy the whole package. It'll be a separate critique from the review of the net, but I thought it would help anyone who didn't already have a mat.

Just from my early impressions, it looks like it can be weighted down. I didn't take it out of the bag, but I didn't see any stakes in there when I looked. I might be wrong so I'll let you know once I can set it up.

Fyi, amateur (ie. not "pro") 😉 tip - if you have the roof extension do make sure there's enough space between you and the net when swinging your full-length Orange Whip Trainer.

Someone I know, who shall remain unnamed ☺️, almost snapped the supporting pole that holds out the front edge. Yes, this net is durable!

After further research (actually taking the net out of the bag), it does come with stakes. I'll be weighing it down quite often as I'll be hitting into my carport.

On a completely unrelated note, I'm going to apologize for the mess on my carport if you happen to see it in videos or pictures. Clearing stuff out is on my winter shutdown to do list.

I was able to get out today after work and set the Spornia up and hit a few balls to get a feel for it.

I'm going to start out with what all was included with the net. 20201219_165421-01.jpeg.a8749d2c7b3facdf4536323841e0af9e.jpeg

The net itself rolls up nicely into a compact shape that is deceptive considering the size of the net fully set up. It fits nicely into the convenient carrying case which has good size handles that make it easy to throw over your shoulder for carrying.

Also included are two larger foldable poles that fit into rings on the side to separate the bottom ball return portion and the top which houses the net and the hitting target. There is also a smaller pole for the net extension at the top above the main net. I didn't set that part up today because it was late and I was itching to hit some balls.

There are also some stakes for securing the net to the ground and a chipping target. I'll be getting some use out of the chipping target since I like to get in the back yard and work on my short game.

The net itself is 7 x 7 which is a good size and if I'm not mistaken, expands to 9 feet tall with the extended roof that you can see hanging down in the photo.

20201219_165655-01.jpeg.f42b15d91bb4565d6b1e813958b355f1.jpeg

I started out hitting a few foam balls just to be on the safe side because every time I go to the range to hit wedges, I shank a bunch. No such problems today, but I'm thinking about buying the side extenders....just in case.

Here are a couple of shots into the net with my 52° wedge. I hit some full shots later on and the net performed perfectly stopping the ball and returning them to the collection area.

When I finished the net was easy to roll back up and store back in the case. As you can see from my outfit, I used to hunt and have had some experience with pop up blinds. It was easier to roll up than any of them I've used. I think it took maybe a minute or two to tear down and store.

I'll get some video of the set-up and takedown process posted up soon. I was having fun and it was getting dark when I finished.

@sirchunksalot,  I would love to have a net,  but my fear is that I will miss the net and hit a house around me.  I see that there are houses around your net and that you mentioned wanting to get the side nets.   How much fear do you have that you are going to miss the  net.

@sirchunksalot,  I would love to have a net,  but my fear is that I will miss the net and hit a house around me.  I see that there are houses around your net and that you mentioned wanting to get the side nets.   How much fear do you have that you are going to miss the  net.

I do have a little fear of hitting one so bad that it'll miss the net, especially if I get sloppy. I'm planning on moving the net around to the side of the house for future practices and I don't want the neighbors to worry about a golf ball meeting the side of their house.

The good thing about the net is how close you set up to it. You can see I've almost got my mat on the bottom of the net and that gives me confidence that I won't miss it. I think the side nets will just give me peace of mind that if I do horribly shank one, it'll be alright. But my ball striking has been so bad at times that I've sent a ball nearly sideways. I think with your ball striking ability, you would be fine.

Had my 1st garage session today: from box cutter in hand to 1st swing in under 8 minutes! This net is a breeze to put up! 1st swing I missed the net completely and hit some shelves I have set up on the side of the garage... I swear only I could miss a net of this size...
Here’s a side by side comparison with my old Calloway net, which also claims to be a 7ft net.IMG_3551.JPG
I hit wedges, irons and some 85 percent drivers

No, you're not the only one!

Occasionally when practicing an exaggerated in-to-out path I'll block a ball to the right outside the net (and I also have some "backstop" 😉 shelves on that side).....

How thick is the target material?

Any of you boys think you’ll poke a hole in it over time?

I didn't quite give the target material a good look over, yet. I'll get a photo of it when I set it up in a bit. I've got to head to the mother-in-law in a few minutes to pick up a tarp to set it up on since it rained last night and I want to keep the net clean.

As far as poking a hole in it, I'm going to try. 😂 I don't have monumental swing speed, but from the MGS tests they stated wedges will do more damage over time and I need wedge work. I like the target size on the Spornia, it takes up a great deal of space and seems like it cradles the ball after it hits the target. It might be a tall order to try to wear it out.

I forgot to mention I went ahead and ordered the side extenders. I woke up this morning and freaked out because the utility company wouldn't accept my card for payment due to it being close to expiring. Had to make sure it still worked and I hadn't gotten hacked.

I was worried, but when that transaction went through I breathed a sigh of relief.

Here's the video of me taking the Spornia down and packing it up.

Also, @B.Boston while I didn't take a photo of the thickness of the target I did look and noticed it's fairly thin. That's not to say it won't hold up, because it seems to really envelop the ball and not take the brunt of the impact.
