2020 Official Member Review: Spornia Practice Net

Really went after the net today! 5 iron swing is around 94 mph and hit some “fairway finder ” drives: around 108 mph which is approaching a full driver swing for me. Not seeing any wear in the impact net yet, and not having to chase balls all around my garage is allowing me to focus on holding my balance/finish after full speed swings. I’ve stopped taking the chipping lip down between sessions: not that it’s a pain to do, but my garage is big and I just need to fold the net by taking the main supports out and leaning it against the back wall. For those of us who will be taking down and putting up this net each time, I’m still confident that you’ll be able to accomplish that in under 10 minutes total.

Has anyone tried to attach the chipping net? Is there a specific way that it’s supposed to go on? I didn’t notice any instructions on that in the box.

Not yet, but I haven't found instructions on where to place it either.

Nice find here! I would have expected it to sit lower in the net for chipping though.

I would think so too. I also applaud the kid in the video for being a way better chipper than I am. I could see good use sitting it back about 10-20 yards and trying to hit it instead of being so close. I'm going to have to give it try and see how I can do with it.

The nice thing is you can pretty much set it how you want.  You can set it lower, and it lays flatter, just by attaching the straps at lower points.

I like to have mine pretty high and take pitch shots from ten to fifteen paces away.

what they don’t show you in the video is the shots that don’t land in the exact middle fall through and roll back to the front of the net.

I purchased it this fall and really liked it. Unfortunately with snow on the ground it’s folded up in the garage waiting for spring.

After the less than stellar round ball striking yesterday, I put the net up today to reaffirm some things from the range session after the round. I had two thoughts today and two thoughts only: rotate and proper club distance away from the body.

I have fallen into a bad habit over the years of allowing my arms overtake my body and I'm working on turning and letting the arms go along for the ride. I've also noticed my hands and the club handle are too close to my body, like the width of my hand close, and am trying to get them the distance from my extended thumb to my pinky.

It was also another spray powder day, trying to get visual feedback on strike. I started out with my 56° wedge.20201229_140609-01.jpeg.7be944cfdccdcb4ab9aa499df43d4636.jpeg

Little toward the toe, but the consistency was an encouraging sign. I was able to move it in later and see more shots close to the center. After that, I hit some chips with the 52° wedge and then moved on to 6 iron. Approach play and wedges were again the focus of the day. 20201229_142129-01.jpeg.c75dab7c94f867d914688550246a355d.jpeg20201229_145043-01.jpeg.f3d718b597ab88bcc4d449f8f741b6f5.jpeg

As you can see, I still have work to do on full shots. I'm still either center or toward the toe, but I'm happy to not see the pattern going to the extremes. Two things to note about the bottom picture is the A in the dimple (thought that was cool), and how the net is sitting behind my deck and there's a door back there. The roof on the net saved my bacon 4 times today, collecting shots that went too high and could have caused damage. I highly, highly recommend the roof option with this net.

I did install the chipping net today, it was super easy and I had a bit of fun with it. 20201229_152414-01.jpeg.76c0b80e79ba45786ec0ec3a7b2379ce.jpeg

I also you some video today of a few shots and of how I've figured out to take the roof pole out the easiest way for me.

Plus, I'm enjoying playing with the Adobe Rush video editor. I'm planning on getting a round in tomorrow and I hope to see some positives come through from being able to practice at home.

I've really put this net to the test the last few days. What do I mean? My ball striking sucks so bad I've hit just about every square inch of the net and I haven't had one ball get away and go through a window in my garage or knock the headlights out of my car. Color me impressed!🤣

Awesome stuff man! Hope you have a good round today.  I like that you paired the foot spray with your net workouts, I feel like that would be one of the best benefits to the net is maintaining your swing and strike.

I had a change to go outside and just make some swings and loosen up since the snow we got up here had melted.  There was a 18mph different between my first "loosened up" swing and my last swing with the driver so I know how much of a benefit it can be just to keep swinging in the off/slow season, but being able to work on your strike is great.

Thanks for sharing with so much detail!

Thanks @B.Boston! I agree, I think the ability to still swing on days where you can't go to the range of play is going to be a huge benefit of having a net. That, and being able to get an idea of strike. Pairing that with time on the range to get an idea of flight will also be helpful, but consistent strike is a goal for me.

I think the net will be beneficial to Planemate work and I'm thinking about purchasing a cutting board to simulate the DownUnder board and work on ground forces.

I'm glad you were able to get out and swing, I think any work you can get in during the off-season is helpful. Gotta do what we can to keep the muscle memory sharp.

Today was a bit of a different practice session for me. I was still focusing on strike, but was also focusing on getting the tension out of my swing. My play this year has exacerbated my tension over the ball and made it to where I stand over the shot way too long and let the doubt creep in.

My plan today was pre shot routine: stand behind the ball to get my line, aim the club to the line, get into my setup position, a couple of waggles to remind myself to rotate, place the club down, and hit. I did this with a wedge, 7 iron, and 5 wood.

I'm still a little on the toe, in fact I toe shanked one into the stair rail on the deck. That was the only shot that escaped the net and no damage was done.

Here's some pictures of my pattern on the 7 iron.20201231_152304-01.jpeg.35ce546b744835d7c3b7bf91ead70b0c.jpeg

I cleaned that off and made an adjustment and was able to move it in the right direction with a little more consistency, but still need work. 20201231_153609-01.jpeg.1064dc264a5f6b1ee4fe78e56895d848.jpeg

The 5 wood was still way too far to the toe.

20201231_154206-01.jpeg.cb8fc0cc2268974138fbb09c2a783b37.jpeg

I hit one a little chunky after this and feel like I jammed my right thumb, so decided that was enough for today. It's still a bit sore four hours later, but I'll take tomorrow off because it's going to rain. Working in automotive assembly doesn't help with all the pushing of parts into place.

I was happy though, I kept the routine going and found out I don't have to spend that much time over the ball and my seeing just flows better. It'll take more time, but I'll get there.

As far as the net goes, it's holding up great to the repeated abuse of wedge shots and all the shots I've hit.  I love the way the target just cradles the ball and returns it.

At the end of the session I timed myself taking it down and packing it up. Even with looking at my phone, putting it in my back pocket, taking it back out and looking at it, the whole process took 4:12. It's quick and easy to take down. Spornia definitely designed that part well.

I probably hit a couple hundred balls the last few days and I've come to the conclusion that having this net set up in my garage over the winter is going to do more for my game come spring than at any other time over the last 30 years. As I said a few days ago my ball striking was horrendous. One shot out of 10 was somewhere near the sweet spot and the rest were all fat or thin. The last couple of days I've worked on my swing and discovered no lag and a little sway. All of a sudden Wham!! I started flushing probably 8 out of 10 shots. The Wilson V6's tell you exactly how well your strike is and they were good. If you are cooped up for the winter like I am, you could spend a couple hundred bucks on a lot of things that won't help your game as much as this net. The only problem I see is it just makes me more impatient for the courses to open in about 3 months.😧

Thank you sir! I just need to take it to the course in the spring. Having this net is way cooler than I even thought it would be. I don't think I'll even fold it up until the course's open in April.

Practice in the winter months keeps me sane! I used to go suffer out at the driving range with heated bays whenever a sunny above freezing day would make an appearance, but being able to pull the cars out of the garage and turn on a space heater whenever I want is a game changer! I’m seriously considering an upgrade on my launch monitor now.

I completely agree with you guys that this net is a game changer. Even without a monitor, the ability to practice and swing a club more than once a week is going to be beneficial going in to the next season. Not to mention, it's fun.

I'm fortunate to have a 4 car garage with only 2 cars so I can leave it up. That way if I'm passing through the garage I can always hit a few

Messed around with the flat setting on my G410 plus today: I may have stumbled onto something...

Anyway I gave the net the business today: full speed swings at 115+ mph with the Driver. Next session will be all wedge work and I’ll give the chipping net a go...

I have one that size and it motivated me to strike my irons better....no, no, that's not it....I chunked it so bad I peeled the grass part away from the rubber bottom. I now have a bigger mat, if I chunk one bad enough to do that on a 5x4 mat I need to give it up.

Got back into the school today (it was closed for the break) and hit a few balls between classes. I noticed something that I already knew, but it become very noticeable today. My den caddy is full of completely random balls and I began to notice a massive difference in flight. Currently I only have a 60° and my DST compressor 8 iron at the school (rest of the bag is coming tomorrow) and I was hitting wedges today. The urethane balls (some Kirkland and chromesofts) consistently hit the top of the target or just above. The surlyn balls (Top Flites, old Nikes, etc.) were easily getting into the roof of the net. It was crazy to see in just a few feet the difference in launch angle off the face. I’ll see if I can do a video with two different types soon.

I like the fact that you get a chipping net with it. The way it attaches seems pretty easy. I have an older Callaway net but it doesn't have anything like that. I just used an old golf umbrella that had the metal tip. Jammed it in the ground, opened the umbrella and used it to chip into.  The only good thing was that you can keep on increasing your distance. But not having to chase the occasional errant shots by chipping into the net has its benefits.

This net continues to impress me on how quick and easy it is to set up and take down. I timed myself taking it down again today and came out with this time.Screenshot_20210104-160648_Clock-01.jpeg.1172f9e259c5255bfeb2cb2504d0825f.jpeg

Down and packed up in under four minutes, not too shabby and I still think I can shave some time off it.

Practice today was good, started out with wedge hitting some  quarter and half shots before moving on to full shots where I started seeing a disturbing pattern, I was hitting them high on the face. I'm not talking kind of high, I'm talking high high. 20210104_152921-01.jpeg.5bdf48c11db3e763c4a8859c7a08b677.jpeg

I had a square face, what sort of wizardry is this? 😱

Moved on to 7 iron and saw more of the same.20210104_154045-01.jpeg.2bec420f5dd44e5f92dbf9ff5f291371.jpeg

At least one was low...

I remembered right after this that a friend advised me to put a ball in front of my lead foot because I was spinning out due to keeping my weight on my back foot and to try not to move the ball. The results were night and day. 20210104_155903-01.jpeg.711b2fd1b9e0a928bbc940017d7d7f18.jpeg

I still need to center it up better, but the ball was rocketing of the face once I got the weight shifting better.

@Rtracymog I'm looking forward to your video of the different covers and how they react. It's something I think is fascinating, I knew that water affected launch, but didn't think about urethane vs two piece.
