2020 Official Member Review: Spornia Practice Net

Here’s the video. All with a 60° Wilson PMP raw wedge. I didn’t clean the wedge or wipe it off between shots, but the grooves are pretty clean because it hasn’t seen use in a couple of years. Still pretty surprising to see the difference.

This net continues to impress me on how quick and easy it is to set up and take down. I timed myself taking it down again today and came out with this time.Screenshot_20210104-160648_Clock-01.jpeg.1172f9e259c5255bfeb2cb2504d0825f.jpeg

Down and packed up in under four minutes, not too shabby and I still think I can shave some time off it.

Practice today was good, started out with wedge hitting some  quarter and half shots before moving on to full shots where I started seeing a disturbing pattern, I was hitting them high on the face. I'm not talking kind of high, I'm talking high high. 20210104_152921-01.jpeg.5bdf48c11db3e763c4a8859c7a08b677.jpeg

I had a square face, what sort of wizardry is this? 😱

Moved on to 7 iron and saw more of the same.20210104_154045-01.jpeg.2bec420f5dd44e5f92dbf9ff5f291371.jpeg

At least one was low...

I remembered right after this that a friend advised me to put a ball in front of my lead foot because I was spinning out due to keeping my weight on my back foot and to try not to move the ball. The results were night and day. 20210104_155903-01.jpeg.711b2fd1b9e0a928bbc940017d7d7f18.jpeg

I still need to center it up better, but the ball was rocketing of the face once I got the weight shifting better.

@Rtracymog I'm looking forward to your video of the different covers and how they react. It's something I think is fascinating, I knew that water affected launch, but didn't think about urethane vs two piece.

You were hitting your 7 iron with the ball in front of your front foot?

I had the ball closer to the middle of my stance. I'm wondering if it had something to do with the mat, I went to the range today and saw shots high in the face, but not that high. 20210105_152339-01.jpeg.a2a9c5782f17f0a8afa12accbca066dc.jpeg

Didn't practice today, but did make it out to the course and I'm starting to see the payoff to the practice. Driver was exceptional, hitting 5/7 fairways and one of those I missed was actually with my 3 wood.

My iron play was the best it's been in a long time. The wedges still need some work in the 50-100 yard range, but on short chips and pitches I saw improvement.

The drills I've been working on with my weight shift and relaxing over the ball have helped tremendously! I still had a few bad shots, but had more that were good.

In other news, my side nets have arrived after ordering them on December 21, so I'm excited to try them out.

awesome to see the practice paying off!  I bet the wedges will come around in no time.  It takes a lot of time to adjust to the spin and reactions you get on a crisply hit pitch vs one when your contact is off.

I missed you talking about the side nets, are they just for additional protection for stray shots?

The side nets are for helping collect those occasional shanks and keep one from say...hitting a car or their house. Not that I've ever hit my house...Screenshot_20210106-164918_Firefox-01.jpeg.60c885c044fbd50d79b1fdba6bfd9d9c.jpeg

I just started doing some of the @SuperSpeed Golf training this week and I noticed that my clubs were all releasing early. Maybe that was from fatigue from the program because I tried hitting balls right after, but has anyone else experienced this that has gone through that program?

It might be fatigue, it was recommended not to hit balls on the same day as doing SuperSpeed. It's also possible you could be releasing early in order to try to get a little more clubhead speed.

That’s what I was thinking. I’m usually more thin than anything else and it was a ton of fat shots today.

I got out today to give the side nets a try, and I'll start off by saying I wasn't overly impressed with them. I had three balls go through the crevice created between the actual net and the side extensions. One hit on my back deck. Screenshot_20210109-171955_Rush-01.jpeg.1a0255ece11ff0d82cec4a9a9e31a904.jpeg

I thought the ball went over the net, but watching the video it went through. Granted, I was aiming at the side net, but I couldn't shank one while I was trying to.

I'm going to have to try it again and watch some more video on how to tighten it up. The side nets go on by attaching Velcro straps to the side netting. 20210109_164840-01.jpeg.721257a142436886e98cddba93aee150.jpeg

I might not have gotten them tight enough to stop the ball from going through. It's worth looking in to, I wouldn't want to recommend or discourage someone buying these without trying everything possible to see if they work.

How secure are the Velcro straps? I’m assuming it didn’t pull the Velcro loose but over time does it look like a durable Velcro?

The Velcro looks to be pretty secure, I had I bit of struggle initially getting them unstrapped out of the bag. I hate Velcro, we deal with it at work on wiring harness bags and boxes. I'll preface that with the statement that I've been a likely candidate to develop carpal tunnel since starting work there, I sometimes struggle with opening wrappers.

I'll get back on topic now. I think I might need to run the straps through the net a bit farther back and close the gap a bit and see if that'll help.

Are there extenders for the net or did the sides come undone as you put it up and take it down frequently? I, luckily (knock on wood), haven’t had to experience using the side netting yet!

They're basically extra nets that you strap on to existing side netting to extend protection down the side.Screenshot_20210109-213714_Firefox-01.jpeg.934bc6d7d9e43a5424d53a99d65520d8.jpeg

They're easy to install, just takes a little bit of time to route the straps around the existing netting. I was working on a video to show how to install them, but just couldn't get anything right with it and my audio messed up on one video. I'll try again later once I get the installation down.

I just went back and looked at the photo from the Spornia website and it looks like the net may attach a little further back than I placed it. I attached it to the part of the net that is the main support running at an angle from top to bottom and it looks like I need to thread it through the netting. Screenshot_20210109-214846_Gallery-01.jpeg.6b47f84c69aaace74d33e72f39e7707b.jpeg

I marked the spot I attached it with an x and where I'll try it again with an o. I think by creating an overlap between the two, it might just keep the ball from escaping. 20210109_215510.jpg.0fde20e74989d55722ad81ef8807dc9d.jpg

I wonder if you velcro from to the inside vs the outside of the main net the overlap would better prevent that?

Tough to tell, but that would be a little disappointing if you can’t get it adjusted to stop those from scooting through.

I'll give that a try, I think an overlap is probably what is needed. There's instructions on the website along with a video, but neither are super clear as to what to do.

The net is still exceeding all my expectations. Here’s some 8 irons and the net holding up to ball speeds in the high 160s-mid 170s.

This net is a solid purchase, no question: @rtracymog are you noticing the logo/target starting to wear? You swing as hard if not harder than me and I think mine is showing the 800+ balls a week going into it...

Not yet, but I know that I’m not putting anywhere near that many into it. I wish I had the time to though! I’m really curious to see what happens when the kids start coming back and putting this net through the paces at a higher clip!

I wasn't able to get out and use the net during the week, having to go back to work after winter shutdown left me sore and we worked late almost every day. Getting home at 5:45 does me no favors in the winter.

That being said, I spent an hour and a half outside today hitting balls with my 56, 8 iron, and driver. My wedge play is coming along nicely, I'm starting to find the center of the face a lot more often. 20210117_131328-01.jpeg.c6a4107aaf310ef18d098fd4e0a7b570.jpeg

I'm working on my 50 yard swing and up and I'm happy to see the results starting to pay off.

Moved on to the 8 iron and let's just say it wasn't as good to start out. 20210117_132405-01.jpeg.8f0afd1d5cf4d68d0c47c436c8bf8548.jpeg

20210117_134051-01.jpeg.18063910f558c885cdc809c4629c89d7.jpegI was still a bit more on the toe than I want to be and spent some time working on that. The second photo was three shots and I really wish I could be that consistent with center strikes.

I made an adjustment to my setup, standing a little more upright when addressing the ball and started seeing better results.20210117_140512-01.jpeg.15bb3ac99bb55f68815e97ba75e95c24.jpeg

I moved on to driver and I think I'm going to find a better place than behind my back porch to work on it. If you look in my last picture, you'll notice the mat curls up toward the hole you put the tee in and that got in my head...big time. The ball kept falling off and I made some horrible shots with it. One ball ricocheted off the net, went straight up and right, and took forever to land. I only heard it and still have no idea where it is. I only know it didn't hit anything it could damage. 20210117_142253-01.jpeg.96df3b217c43aa67049a1794b3c74f9a.jpeg

I am going to take it to my mother-in-law's house for driver duty from now on, her yard is flatter and isn't a mile from a rock quarry so I can put a tee in the ground and not use the mat.

@Micah T, even though I don't have the speed you guys have, I have been hitting a lot of wedge shots which are supposed to eat nets alive and I haven't seen wear on the back stop itself at all. There is minor cracking of the target that is printed on, but nothing significant. 20210117_125641-01.jpeg.9bb9fb3d22d205160d9e3bc6321a1658.jpeg

The white marks are from the foot spray I use and nothing I'm concerned about. I am also hitting fewer balls than you since I don't have an indoor place to use the net. Part of my critique of the net will be how it handles being put up and taken down every use, so I like that aspect of it.

After a good practice session yesterday plus starting to paint the bathroom, I'm a bit sore today. What to do? I decided to not go all out and put some time in with the chipping net. It's really simple to put up and a really fun way to practice.

I set the net up around 10 yards away and started hitting some balls. I like how using this feature you can see flight, accuracy, and distance control, something you don't get just hitting into a net.

I never thought about adjusting the angle of the chipping net, it makes sense seeing as how you have a lot of net on the sides to work with.

That's  what I was thinking. Sir Chucksalot you need to put the net in a level spot or level out the ground. Otherwise you'll get a lot of topped shots on the course.

I need to work on leveling it out, at least where I stand for chipping practice. Where I hit full shots, I've found a small patch of level ground to stand on and if I put the net beside the house, there's a level spot next to where we park one of the cars. I really didn't think the yard was that bad when we bought the house, but I wasn't hitting golf balls back there.

One thing I've learned since getting this net is , I wish I would have had one this nice 20 years ago. It's so nice to actually practice with a purpose. I really can't find any flaws with this thing.

I can see why it was the runner up in the MyGolfSpy most wanted net review and am actually surprised it didn't win. Setting it up and taking it down is a breeze, it's portable, and I like how the integrated side nets catch wayward shots. Plus, the chipping net is a great addition and adds value.

I know a net can't replace getting out to the range and seeing actual ball flight and results, but I've learned a lot about my swing using the net.

The high on the face shots could be due to the DuraPro mat not being very thick/heavy and using it outdoors on the grass.  Club comes down into impact, the mat gives more than it should, and you end up hitting high on the face.  For a mat that thin, it might be best to put some plywood underneath it.  The sacrifice there would be you might get more lucky bounces into the ball and it won't tell you if you are hitting it fat as well.  High on the face typically means a fat shot.
