The net is still exceeding all my expectations. Here’s some 8 irons and the net holding up to ball speeds in the high 160s-mid 170s.

How tall is that ceiling?!?!  I'm jealous you can hit driver indoors.  The most I can swing comfortably is a 9 iron, and even then, I don't go much more than a 3/4 follow through.

I got out today to give the side nets a try, and I'll start off by saying I wasn't overly impressed with them. I had three balls go through the crevice created between the actual net and the side extensions. One hit on my back deck. Screenshot_20210109-171955_Rush-01.jpeg.1a0255ece11ff0d82cec4a9a9e31a904.jpeg

I thought the ball went over the net, but watching the video it went through. Granted, I was aiming at the side net, but I couldn't shank one while I was trying to.

I'm going to have to try it again and watch some more video on how to tighten it up. The side nets go on by attaching Velcro straps to the side netting. 20210109_164840-01.jpeg.721257a142436886e98cddba93aee150.jpeg

I might not have gotten them tight enough to stop the ball from going through. It's worth looking in to, I wouldn't want to recommend or discourage someone buying these without trying everything possible to see if they work.

That always seems to be the problem with side protection.  It almost needs to be one continuous piece of material that is big enough to give like a box enclosure.

After a good practice session yesterday plus starting to paint the bathroom, I'm a bit sore today. What to do? I decided to not go all out and put some time in with the chipping net. It's really simple to put up and a really fun way to practice.

I set the net up around 10 yards away and started hitting some balls. I like how using this feature you can see flight, accuracy, and distance control, something you don't get just hitting into a net.

The high on the face shots could be due to the DuraPro mat not being very thick/heavy and using it outdoors on the grass.  Club comes down into impact, the mat gives more than it should, and you end up hitting high on the face.  For a mat that thin, it might be best to put some plywood underneath it.  The sacrifice there would be you might get more lucky bounces into the ball and it won't tell you if you are hitting it fat as well.  High on the face typically means a fat shot.

That sounds like a good idea, I appreciate the advice. I had been wondering if I might have been placing the ball over a hole in the yard to hit it that high on the face. 😂

What would you recommend thickness wise?

The thicker/heavier the better most likely.  You want something that will compress the ground/grass enough to give you a solid surface.  I've seen people build a permanent platform out of 2x4's sunk into the ground to make them level.  Then you could put your plywood over top of that, and the mat on top of that.  It looks like you have trees in your backyard.  Are there houses on the other side of those trees?  If not, I would be hitting in that direction and build something permanent.

I just wanted to show y'all how the Spornia practice is paying off. As I've mentioned before I'm focusing a lot on irons and wedges since those are the weakest areas of my game and wedges eat up nets due to spin. I figure it's killing two birds with one stone, testing durability and working on the part of my game that needs it most.

I played nine holes today, not really shooting good and that was no fault of my wedges.

Screenshot_20210119-161231-01.jpeg.0c6ba0c3e75a9db7a21389b1a0176717.jpegScreenshot_20210119-161409-01.jpeg.13031621b846afc2d175a9b1efcc9cbe.jpeg

The +0.5 strokes gained against a 15 handicapper ( my goal for the year ) is a positive for my game. I've really struggled with this for a while and this stat has me smiling. The proximity number is a good one, too.

As far as my irons go, I'm pleased with how they performed today. I had a bout with improper weight shift that hindered me today and I'm going to focus more on that moving forward. Screenshot_20210119-161528-01.jpeg.dc99266471cb29879b93b7d6314c03be.jpeg

I've got a piece of wood on my carport I'm going to use as a balance board to add to my practice to feel a better shift toward my lead side on swings without a ball.

I've still got to work on loosening up on the course, I can pull the trigger faster practicing but still tense up on the course.

That's  what I was thinking. Sir Chucksalot you need to put the net in a level spot or level out the ground. Otherwise you'll get a lot of topped shots on the course.

I was gonna suggest turning it 180 and hitting ball-below-the-feet lies

Honestly, that wouldn't be a bad idea. I've wound up in some crazy places on the course and you can't practice that stuff on the range.

Seems for many players .. especially me! .. ball below the feet is the most difficult uneven lie.

I'm liking that short game stat you posted above .. nice!! 👍

Thank you! I'm excited to see the short game coming along. I wasn't too sure after hitting the range before the round, I was shanking the living daylights out of my chip shots. I realized I was getting too active with my arms and not letting my body do its work.

As far as ball below feet, I agree with you. It's a very awkward lie and having to squat more doesn't feel right. It's a whole lot easier to stand taller and adjust.

I can see why it was the runner up in the MyGolfSpy most wanted net review and am actually surprised it didn't win. Setting it up and taking it down is a breeze, it's portable, and I like how the integrated side nets catch wayward shots. Plus, the chipping net is a great addition and adds value.

I know a net can't replace getting out to the range and seeing actual ball flight and results, but I've learned a lot about my swing using the net.

It's kind of weird , I get more out of the net than I do banging balls on the range. I am the first to admit I'm a terrible range rat. All I do on the range is try to see how far I can hit each shot. I know better but I can't help myself. Hitting in my garage I just concentrate on the contact of each shot I hit. When I first got the net put up my strikes were all over the place. The last couple of weeks I've been pretty much flushing it. I just hope it carries on over to the course come spring. I really need to move south!!🙁

I’m thinking 12 ft, maybe a touch less. I have no worries about anyone hitting the ceiling unless they follow through straight up.

I wanted to get out yesterday and practice with the net, but 15-20 mph winds put a hold on that. I can say a lot of positives about the net right now but if there's a negative, it's not stable in higher winds. That's one of the risks of not having a permanent indoor place for it.

I was able to get out today and I actually set it up in my carport and was able to put my mat on concrete. It made a huge difference in strike location and motivated me not to hit it fat. 20210124_153127-01.jpeg.a4b6bc72ba48b531fbb0e74e92a97499.jpeg

I was still a little bit off the toe, but after working on better rotation through impact I did eventually see better results.

I hit foam balls with everything but the wedge, the thought of shanking one into my sister-in-law's  car led to that decision.

20210124_152433-01.jpeg.07400e6e47182423e785e79d9fc3949c.jpeg

Plus, I was working on weight shift and anything new kind of sometimes might lead to disastrous results. The 7 iron and 5 wood did hit the side portion of the net a few times.

  • 2 weeks later...

Weather was goofy today, it's going to rain, it's not going to rain, rain's over us but not falling at the house. I decided to put up the net and give myself some much needed golf swing therapy.

I only took two clubs out with me in case the rain started and I could be packed up and gone quick, my 52 and 8 iron. I was hoping the Birtees I ordered would come in today, but they didn't.

I started out hitting what I feel is my 20/30 yard shot and am starting to see a difference in my contact. 20210206_140418-01.jpeg.ff9ebcfd7467bb119aa71eedf5be6f28.jpeg

It's hanging out a bit on the toe side and that little booger of the toe was a bit of sloppiness by losing connection with my left arm, a big problem I'm working on. But out of nine shots, I'm not going to complain.

After that, I moved on to 50 yard shots and was a bit more erratic. 20210206_141313-01.jpeg.95ba31bf24208a631416206072596a94.jpeg

A couple of low shots on the face, but I was definitely leaning toward the heel.

Full shots came next. No real horrible shots, but still not as consistent as I'd like, but I'm still happy with the improvement in seeing from as little as a month ago.

I also spent some time with the wedge working on short chip shots and playing with trajectory. I hit some shots from the back, middle, and front of my stance trying to add some variety to the greenside game. I was also opening up the face to varying degrees for the inevitable shot over a pond. I've donated way too many balls to that stinking pond.

The 8 iron was the star of the show today. 20210206_144245-01.jpeg.82ba3e7eea0f621fb7749ad3cecebc1c.jpeg

It was still biased toward the heel, but the pattern looks like I hit one giant foam ball.

I want to send a thank you out to @Tom the Golf Nut for noticing in one of my earlier videos and messaging me that he noticed I was keeping my weight on my back foot and gave me the drill to place a ball beside my left foot and not knocking it away during my swing. My back yard slopes slightly uphill where I stand, which magnifies my fault.1195935961_Screenshot_20210206-190256_VideoPlayer-01.jpeg.9d22409e4497ee1c520ffe36a0a34b01.jpeg

His advice has really helped me shift on to the lead side and I feel like in making crisper, more consistent contact.

Wondering do you use foam balls while using the spray on the club as well?

I will use the spray with the foam balls, but I do have to clean and spray the clubs more often. I find that the foam balls really compress and it gets difficult to differentiate where contact is made. With real balls I can get ten shots in and still have an idea how I'm doing, but three or four shots with the foam balls can cover the entire face.

I try to stick with regular balls for most practice, unless I'm working on something extreme with my swing. I'll also use them in situations where I might, for example, shank one into a car.

Try a dry erase marker for irons and wedges...

So I’ve learned a few things using the indoor net. 1. Don’t cheap out on the foot spray. The Meijer brand doesn’t show up very well. 2. My ball striking is definitely getting better. I used to be much more toey on most of my misses and now they are sliding closer to the heel. This is where I need to see some ball flight. I’m wondering if I’m getting a little to out to in on the path. Here’s some strikes from today. I know it’s a little tough to see, but I hit 5 balls with each.

I'll be interested to see how this'll translate to your game once you can get out and play. I'm seeing positive results so far and wonder how it'll work for you in shaking the winter rust off.

Still impressed by that 4 iron.

So I had kids doing some driver testing after 4 weeks of @superspeedgolf training and lifting and there were some serious shanks off the side bar that missed the net (4 total) and the net simply went back into place. No damage to the poles at all as far as I can see!

I'll be interested to see how this'll translate to your game once you can get out and play. I'm seeing positive results so far and wonder how it'll work for you in shaking the winter rust off.
Still impressed by that 4 iron.

I’m going to play 18 in a simulator using foresight tomorrow. I will be curious to see how the swing and ball flight looks as well.
Hitting the 4 iron like that is dangerous. It might make me think that I could play blades a lot farther along in the set and better than I can.

I can't wait to hear how it goes for you and if you see any improvement in your game. I know a sim isn't quite the same as seeing actual ball flight, but it gets pretty close.

I love the net and more specifically how it really motivates me to actually work on drills. I've played twice recently and the things I'm working on are showing improvement on the course. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, I still have old habits creep in. I am finding that when I just relax and trust the process, I'm seeing results that make me believe I might just be able to play this game. I'm going to work more on weight shift this weekend as I'm still occasionally trying to help the ball get into the air. I was hoping my driveway would be dry when I got off work today, but it was still wet.
