2020 Official Member Review: Nippon Zelos Iron Shafts

Trackman has a neat virtual driving range so I used it for some more dispersion testing with a 7 iron. The pin was 170 out with 165 to hit the green and it gave me the sense of hitting towards a target and not just aimlessly down the range.

This was from 1 range session with no shots removed from the testing and was much more closely resembling what I was seeing out on the course. I will for sure be doing this more often as the weather is pretty much keeping me inside so far so if there are any clubs in particular that want to be seen let me know.

I recently got fitted through my whole bag and while some things stayed the same and other things changed my irons entirely did not make the cut. In two months time my P790's with the Zelos 7's will be replaced by a set of Srixon ZX7's with Tour Issue Dynamic Gold 120's in a S400 flex. Since the ZX7's are 2 months out from being delivered I will still get the chance to play about 5-10 rounds with my P790's and will update on the performance accordingly.

I don't think that they are completely going to be leaving my bag though. I might sneak the P790's into the 4 and possibly 5 iron slot in my bag if needed so we shall see. I think the lower weight will be a great transition into my longer clubs so stay tuned.

I played in a 2 day tournament this past weekend and won it as low net. My iron play was fantastic and I could only thank the Zelos 7's for such a great win. I managed to hit 6 GIR on Saturday and 8 GIR on Sunday which lead me to a 83 and 85 respectively. I should be getting my new irons this week so those past two rounds made an incredibly strong case to keep the shafts no matter what.

My ZX7 irons came in last week and have been in the bag for 2 rounds and there is nothing I can complain about with them. For anyone curious about the process of going back from lighter shaft to heavier it was easier than I thought. Even though the Zelos 7's are about 40g lighter than the Dynamic Gold 120's I did not see any discernable loss of club head speed from the 6 iron down. I may have lost 1-2mph with the 4 and 5 iron but my club head speed tends to fluctuate with those clubs depending on my swing so it's hard to tell.

I mentioned previously I might put my P790's with the Zelos 7 in the 4 or 5 iron slot but the jury is still out on that as the ZX7's are performing well so far. I have the P790 Zelos 7 combo boxed up and in the attic for the time being however if anyone wants to see some head to head data I can very easily go and make that happen.

For what it's worth my brother is now gaming my P790's with the Zelos 7 shafts in them still. He took them out onto the course today for a short 9 holes and was seeing the same results as I was. They were very high launching and very easy to hit. I think they will be a good combo for him as he is a slower swing speed player and he has an injured neck so he can't swing as hard as he would like but because of the P790 and Zelos 7 combo he doesn't really have to. He did manage to try out the Zelos 6 in a P790 (he works at a driving range that had the shaft) and he definitely prefers the Zelos 7 over the Zelos 6.
