Reshafting Irons P790 from Regular to Stiff, impact on my game....

Dear all,

This will be my first post on this forum. I am quite new in the game, but I love it!

I am playing golf for 3,5 years and it goes pretty well I think . Although the familiar frustrations and struggles, I really enjoy the game. First I had a starters set of Wilson, but bought the TM p790 irons in July 2019. My irons were fitted and has regular shaft dynamic gold 105. Due to the fact my game improved quite well and my swing speed increased a lot I think I need to reshaft my irons to stiff Shafts. I already replaced/reshaft my hybrid, 3 woods and driver.

hereby my stats;

35 years old
Playing right handed, but I am a lefty...
played a lot of sports during my life.

Current Bag
Driver Callaway Epic Flash SZ stiff shaft
3 wood TM M4 (reshafted summer 2020 to stiff)
hybrid 3 Callaway Mavrik Max sitff shaft
Irons  4/PW TM P790 2017 version regular shaft dynamic gold 105
Vokey wedges 52,56,60 degrees
Scotty Cameron putter

HCP
January 2018 38hcp
January 2019 28hcp
July 2019 19.9hcp(bought the TM p790 2017 version. 4/pw regular shaft as present of a hcp of <20 ;-).
January 2020 15.7hcp
August 2020 9.7hcp(replaced my  driver and hybrid, reshafting my 3wood to stiff.
since october 8.6hcp
goal for next year hcp around 5??? if possible off course.

I am able to measure my swing speed with a garmin device.

Swing Speed
september 2019 driver 92mph / 7 iron 79 mph
June 2020           driver 95mph/  7 iron 79 mph
December 2020 driver 104mph/ 7 iron 88mph
Since september I go very often to the gym to improve strenght and I bought a speed swing stick to improve my swing speed. Perhaps this helped a lot.

Ball flight quite high and most of the time a draw. If I miss, it is always left.
Is it possible my regular shafts  influences  my miss on the left?? and will a stiff shaft help my game?

Currently I am doubting what to do, I wanna go to clubfitter to reshaft my irons (400-500 euros?) or buy new clubs (1000-1200 euros?) and sell my current clubs(400-500 euros?)
If I want to buy new ones I think about the p790 2019 version of p770. At least irons which I could play for 4/5 years. Or do you have another good suggestion??
Due to the fact I just play golf for 3.5 years. My game and swing changed and will changes a lot. In opinion this is some very difficult to combine with your material and what suits you the best for the moment and for the near future. What is your experience with this?

What should you do and could you give me some advice regarding my irons and shafts?

Cheers from the Netherlands!!!

First off welcome to the forums. As it relates to your question it seems like you have made some great progress on you swing so new shafts or irons could be in order, but as many will tell you here getting fit is the best option I feel. A good fitter should be honest in work with you. If you go in and state your goals, reducing dispersions or changing start line. Mention your progress and the change in shaft flex in other clubs. A good fitter should be honest about the results of a shaft change will help and can speak to a model you can "grow" with.

As a quick note based on you 7 iron speed stiff shafts in irons would be the default choice, but that is the beauty of equipment. Some people respond and time a softer shaft better, others don't. This is just one of the many reasons we all say to get fit.

It’s possible the shafts could influence your miss but it’s not just about flex but the shaft profile that will have more influence. I’ve seen people drop a flex and weight in the same and different shafts and not have it influence their results.

As was mentioned a fitting will be the best way to find what’s the best setup for you and it could be just a shaft change and the p790s are a great club and are played by golfers of all skill levels and speeds. Any recommendations we give would be just guesses based on swing speed which is only one of several factors that would go into finding the right setup. The new p790s, the p770, Mizuno jpx, Titleist ts100 or 100-s, cobra and so on could all be a good fit. Nippon modus shafts in 120 or 15, the standard dg s300 shafts, steelfibers and so many others could be a good fit in your current setup or in new irons.

You could find a gold shop that has demo clubs and hit them with a stiffer shaft and see what the results are and go from there as another option.

Thank you for your reply. My current Driver, hybrid and my reshafted 3wood are fitted by a specialist. Really happy with it, less dispersions and more controle. In the netherlands we have some golf shops, but the fitting is not that brilliant. Than you have to go to a niche specialist. Most of the time a bit more expensive, but much more expertise. I think I will try some clubs for free at the golf shop with a trackman, just for the feeling and will go the special fitter to get my shafts done or buying new clubs ;-).
