Medicus Swing Speed

Recommended Posts

I bought a Medicus Swing Speed Meter. Had it set to all the correct heights and club lengths as per the very vauge instructions provided. I took it to a professional golf shop simulator, think it was a Vector and couldn't get it to read anything like my swing speed. It was off by 14/15 mph and no matter how I adjusted club length it would not read the same.

Not a very good product in my opinion. My problem is I have had it too long and cannot return it.

Really? I use mine all the time when warming up to make sure my swing is correct. I've compared it to what the aboutGolf simulator I used during my lessons said and it was fairly accurate +/- 2mph. I'm not sure if these things have a warranty or not, but you might want to try contacting medicus and tell them your unit is faulty.

I have one. Haven't compared it directly with a launch monitor, but it seems consistent with what I've swung on monitors in the past. Main problem I have is it will register on a practice swing, but rarely registers when I am actually hitting a ball...

i think this thing is pretty accurate and it gives good feedback on mishits or flushed hits.n it shows up on both my prac swings n contact too

I have had one of these for at least a year, I take it out occassionally but do not use it on a consistant basis. NO MORE. I got the call this morning and we had a game this afternoon. I really wanted to win it so I took this out of the bag on the range and put it on. I tried some swings, and then I decided to adjust my stance a little. I have been working on swing changes and then had back problems but I decided to try some new things. And low and behold, I found that if I bent slightly more at the waist and allowed my hands to hang straight down and some other minor things, I gained 5 mph with the driver and 3 mph with the 7 iron.

After a rather shaky start, (3 boggies) I settled in. Distance and accuracy was incredible. Putting was aweful due to fuzzy wet greens, I had 5 boggies, and 3 birdies and the rest pars. I had 10 birdie putts of 15 feet or less. I will use this everytime I warm up to ensure I am swinging my best.

Mine does not register the same on practice swings as it does with contact with the ball, But gaining 15 yards and 9 yards by varying your set up is huge.

I agree, the medicus and orange whip are part of my warmup routine to help me get the feel of my swing. It's very helpful.

hi guys i hit my 6 iron around 177 yards depending on how i step on the gas and the swing meter shows my clubhead speed is ard 85-87 mph, but ytd at the golf shop it shows my speed to be 77 but i hit it 177 yards. is it off? or am i really slow this is weird or am i not transferring my energy to the ball at all

*did a lil more research and found out that for 85 mph my dist shd be well over 185yards if i multiply it by 2.2-2.4 guess its the efficiency of my swing thats sth tt i needa work on

175-177 is excellent distance for a 6 iron struck at 85mph. You are nearly at tour quality speeds. Furthermore, the 2.2 yds/mph of club speed is ONLY for the driver. Since the 6-iron smash factor will be in the 1.3(good amateur) to 1.37(tour pro), you will NOT get that kind of distance. 1.88 would be a more realistic number.

If you are hitting a 77 mph six iron 177, you must have a tremendous forward shaft lean at impact, turning that 6 iron into a 4.5 or 5 iron effective loft. It would actually make sense, because unless you are a Sergio, or a tremendous athlete, most golfer lose a lot of speed if they delay the release that long. The BS we were subjected to for years about maximum lag and delayed release is probably all wrong.

A bit OT, but you're clearly a reader of Manzella, Michael Jacobs, and co, yes? I've been watching their videos and reading their sites lately...all very interesting stuff.

LOLOL....BUSTED!!! Yeah, not only have I followed their sites, I have had five or six lessons with Jacobs and a couple with Manzella. Furthermore, I have gone through the "delaying the lag" bs in an attempt to cure "the flip" or club throwaway in Manzella terms. I think that for the average player, and even most low handicappers, the probability of having the athleticism and ability to use that lag (e.g. Sergio Garcia) is not very likely, and of who could, most would find themselves visiting their orthopedic specialist/chiropractor at a relatively young age.

Many golfers do have success with a lot of forward shaft lean, and if you can do it successfully, keep it up. I just hate to see or read about the average golfer like me being told to delay the release or to somehow try and artifically create lag in the belief this will create more distance is simply not true.

It's very interesting stuff, for sure. I've been reading the forum a couple times a week, just getting my feet wet. Also been watching the Michael Jacobs videos. I think Manzella's most recent (?) video about his time on the ENSO machine was the best. He explains that the "new release" is good for creating speed, but clearly states that if you're doing something else, and it's working, keep doing it.

To me, I think it's all a question of degree. Do we want the shaft leaning 40* forward at impact? No. Do we want a huge flip with backward shaft lean at impact? No. I think there's a happy medium in there somewhere for most people. My concern is that virtually everyone I see come through my center flips the daylights out of the club. If I tell them about the "throwaway", is that going to help them? IMO, not as much as getting them to get their hands more ahead of the ball then they are currently.

All that said, I'm still very new to the Manzella stuff and remain open to being convinced...of anything.

I like your attitude. I can also envision many decent amateur golfers reading this info and in three weeks developing a flip. I occasionally practice at a range where a couple of the instructors are what I call "flavor of the month" instructors. When I first went there, all I overheard was "The X factor." Then a few years ago, everyone was "Stack and Tilt." God only knows what the swing du jour will be next time I am there.

The flip was very difficult to lose. This is also when I began to understand that practice swings had ZERO relevance on actual swings. I could make a picture perfect swing with about 10* of FSL in the mirror or window I can see my reflection. Put a golf ball in from of me, and the "same swing" would be 5* behind the ball.

Isn't it amazing how a little white ball changes things so dramatically? I get to see it every day...on video!

As for the flavor of the month guys, here's my take: everybody has something they can teach me. There are some good things that the S&T guys know/teach...they just might not be a fit for everyone. I want to know everything I can, learn from everyone I can, and use that big collection of knowledge to instruct in a way that fits the person in front of me.
