Unique / specialized clubs in your set up

Herts JoaTMoN

Recommended Posts

My standard set up with around 14 yard gapping between my clubs has 11 clubs including my putter. Boredom through lockdown has me considering some additional clubs for my bag to fill those final 3 slots and I wondered if anyone else with less than 14 clubs in their bag used the extra slots for something specific as well...

I have a smart sole C chipper that use when I haven't played for months and want something easy around the greens. The mocking i get from my friends doesn't bother me as I always end up close to the pin with that thing. Then, once i have my groove back, I'll use my 9 iron - wedges around the green.

I'm considering a shorter, higher lofted Driver for narrow fairways / when I have a hazard i really need to make sure I carry / or I'm just having an off day from the tee.

I'm also considering a one length 4 hybrid. Thought it might be good on windy days, fairway bunkers, rough, shots where I'm worried about holding my landing spot and am happy for the ball to run out, Punch shots under trees etc. also. I've not tried one yet, but I'm sure it would be easy to control / fun to mess about with... My understanding is it is designed with a lower spin to achieve the same total distance through roll as its regular length equivalent.

Do any of you carry a club that's not in there for the distance gap but to serve a specific purpose / scenario / just for fun?

My bag is pretty standard, but I did replace my 4 iron and hybrid with a 4 crossover and 2 crossover from ping. I really like them both and they have been great clubs for me, however maybe this year I'll see a change again. Would love to see the Ping Long Game testing come back!

That was a fantastic testing opportunity and group. Enjoyed that one a lot.

As for the original question, I've gone the opposite of "speciality" and tried to put clubs in my bag that I can use for multiple shots and situations. For me, that meant replacing the 3 wood with a 17 degree Callaway Super Hybrid and getting rid of a 19 degree "driving iron" and going to a 21 degree Callaway Epic Flash hybrid in that slot. The two clubs basically act as more versatile 3 and 5 woods for me.

Over the past two years (125+ rounds) I can count on one hand the number of times I've hit 3 wood from anywhere but the tee, and I think it worked out once. I did use the driving iron more often from the tee, but almost never from the fairway/rough. While my home course rarely demands a second shot of 200+, both of these clubs give me more options than just a tee club.

Great question! Ever since I saw Phil using two drivers I've been curious to try it out myself. My 3w is practically always a tee ball club, so building up a little shorter fairway finder driver and pairing it with a bomber seems like it could be a viable strategy.

I've also been tempted to get a driving iron to rotate in my bag in place of my hybrid for windy days, but have yet to pull the trigger.

I think I’m going to be adding a 2 iron to my bag and experimenting with simply removing my gap wedge.

I just put my old Ping Eye2 2-iron back in my bag a month ago.  There was a long stretch where it was the only thing I could hit off the tee, and there are still times when I need something that isn't as long and has less dispersion on a bad swing than my driver.  I had been carrying a 60* wedge around for absolutely no reason whatsoever (actually it was because it matches my 56* and I have this thing about breaking them up) so out that came.  I think that was the first time the grip on that wedge had seen daylight in about a year.

I always try to remember that I'm not good enough to get mad!

I've entertained the thought of trying a 46"+ driver as well, recently. If anything, just for fun. Especially after seeing Ian on TXG build up his G425 to 46". All other factors being equal (which is only hypothetical because the swing would change slightly, too), going from 44.5" to 46" could net me another 5+ MPH club head speed.

Oh absolutely. And if you weren't quite as concerned about fairway finding with it I'm sure you could lean towards some more distance friendly launch conditions without worrying too much about dispersion. Only thing that's stopped me so far is the ole budget 😂

This was my thinking. I have 2 bags. One is my carry only 9 club bag for practice / fun. Then i have my 11 club push cart gamer bag, which i have whittled down to by 11 essentials. (driver, 5wd, 2 hybrids, 4 irons, 2 wedges). I dropped the 3 wood as it was tee only and i found i didn't gain much in terms of scoring, but a massive 3 wood would be a huge confidence booster off the tee and allow me to set up my other driver for max distance rather than a blend of distance / control

I had one of those as well. I found it too bulky though and ended up swapping it out for a CBX 56* wedge which I had bent to 57*. Use that or my eye 2 BeCu SW depending on conditions / how I'm feeling. I'll do a WITB for my "full" bag one of these days when the Mrs is out and wont hassle me about having my "dirty" clubs out indoors (I wipe them after every shot and clean after every few rounds, she is just a clean freak).

In terms of the second driver, I'm thinking of cutting my Nike Vapor Flex 440 down to 43-43.5 (via tipping to preserve the flex after adding weight to the head) and playing it at 12.5. Or buying a second hand 13.5 Callaway XR16 or speed and putting a 3wood shaft in it, then adding lead tape or a heavier weight in the port for swing weight.

My gamer was a rogue, but i put a dent in the face through a period of bad heel mishits when i was really attacking the ball long drive style at the driving range, so i have reverted back to my trusty big bertha fusion (and a more manageable swing).

[edit] I use to have a Big Bertha Mini 1.5 but got rid when I was doing my club cull and cutting my clubs down. It wasn't as forgiving as a driver and wasn't the easiest off the deck, so if I'm going for a second tee only club then its a case of go big or go home! haha

I carry both a 7 wood and a 3 hybrid. Though they probably carry the same or similar distance I don't hit the ball very high with most of my clubs, but I do with the 7 wood. So I carry it for instances when I need a much higher ball flight.

7 wood is usually the same loft as a 4h or 3 iron

I love my 5wood so much I don't carry a 3 wood.

To @Herts JoaTMoN original topic of consistent 14yd gaps and only needing 11 clubs: use whatever club you feel will help you score lower! If you want two drivers, a chipper, and two sand wedges then go for it! There is no reason not to unless you are costing yourself strokes.

My personal gaps on the high end of my bag are around 10 yards from my 5w, 4h, to 4i but I like it like that for going for greens.

I could easily play without a 4i or Gap wedge, and the 72° lob wedge I have is almost useless so it never makes it in my bag.

the way Maltby says it boils down to strokes. The 64° and more lob wedges usually cost people more strokes than another club will benefit them (like a hybrid or chipper)

Golf is simple - people are complicated.

5w Taylormade SLDR S 19* - 220yd, Ping G2 5-U - 190-105, Maltby M+ 54* & MG 60* - 95-75, Evnroll ER8, Titleist 816 H1 4h 21*, Maltby 4 Hybrid Iron 24* - 210-200, Callaway XR16 8* - 235 carry

This is it. I look at my 11 clubs and I think I'm covered for carry distances from about 80 to about 220-230 and can hold greens from about 190 in (hybrids down). I swing around 90mph but strike consistency in the longer clubs need improving.

What could i add to this that would help me score better?

I came up with answers of the safety driver, a one length 4 hybrid (I think its like a long distance chipper), and then the chipper. If there are no hazards I need to carry, then the latter 2 should inspire a lot of confidence to hit a straight shot with roll out to make the green, especially if I'm having a bad day. And on the open courses i play there is a big advantage to having a low flying ball flight in the high winds, I could adjust the 2nd driver and hybrid loft up or down to suit the conditions prior to the round.

Experimenting with a Mini 1.5 Bertha right now as a second club off the tee. Not looking for a driver placement, but more of a 3 wood with a larger footprint that is uber forgiving off the tee. No need to ever hit a wood off the deck as I am over the moon with my 17* hybrid. if i could land one cheap, id like to try a Cobra tour length 12* driver as well. so far the mini bertha is staying in the bag.

I'm thinking of getting an old f6 baffler to replace my current 5 wood also

I like it but I think I’m gonna replace it with a bigger headed 4w. Same shaft length though. Just want a little more forgiveness in the head

I have done that but I don't like the flatter lie that playing with a shortened shaft results in which is why I wanted a club that's 41.5 stock length

I ended up getting the old black one 4 utility and a SZ 4/5 adjustable one hybrid to put up against each other for a spot in the bag.

The utility as a 5 and the hybrid as a 4 is also a potential option. just need them to a) arrive and b) open up the range in the UK so i can get some testing in now...

URGHH!!!! This lock down is driving me crazy.

I have set the one length SZ hybrid to 21.5*, and the one length black utility set to 22.5*, to put head to head to see which will be my get out of jail distance club but I cant test them anywhere. I figure those lofts would put them in similar launch windows. I would like to try them at a Top Tracer driving range first to get some baseline numbers in terms of carry and flight characteristics and play with the settings to maximize the distances with both. Then try them in different lies and off the tee etc. to see which i get on with better and which proves the most versatile.

I'm tempted to sneak on to a local golf course on one of the holes that are out of the way but knowing my luck i'll end up caught and fined. I'm losing my mind sitting around the house all day every day though.

Catching up on my MGS reading between periods of tonight’s lightning game.

I used to game two drivers when I played 90 percent of my rounds on a course in Indiana. Just subbed stuff in when I travelled to balance stuff out.

Talked about this with a friend in Saturday’s round. Since I don’t currently bag a hybrid and really only use 13 clubs I’ve considered

A. Putting a hybrid in the spot that I could chip with.

B. Putting a chipper in.

C. Putting in a dedicated big soaked sand iron.

Since I have the hybrid already it’s likely to be the first man in.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD
