Aw trying to get onto the privates is half the fun!

There's actually a private course in town just off the water that's part of a gated community I ride my bike by all the time in the summer that I've been asking around about, and no one so far knows anyone who can invite me on as a guest.

I live in Louisville, KY.  We have 100 golf courses in Louisville, total of 300 in KY.  My first goal would be to play the 100 private and public here in Louisville.  Top of my head I think I have played about half.  But once I get retired will have got knock of the rest here in town.

This offseason the two Northern Ohio sections merged (or Toledo was eliminated depending on pov) any way I'm building a list of all 18 hole courses in the section. I'll settle for just playing those. There's over 100 within an hour of my house. And who knows how many out closer to PA or IN. I know there's a few hidden gems on the fringes that are worth the trip.

I stopped playing for the most part to raise my daughter so missed Bandon in the early days. I believe Juniper is on their 3rd course but I could be wrong. Wherever the course was in the late 80s and early 90s is the one I played. The course down in Lakeview is closing this Sept. so Im going to go get that one. along with Christmas Valley course.

Arrowhead is a great course.  Id like to join but logistically not perfect. Live in Keizer but work in Woodburn.

So Scotland is a small country but in terms of courses is about 550. I would guess I've played about 200 and probably never will get to to play them all.  Some are just too remote. From Shetland in the North to the Isle of Harris in the West. I do have my clubs with me most of the time but I think you would need to dedicate 5-10 years to do it.

Here's a link to a guy how did over the space of nearly 40 years

Impressive list!!  I haven't played much in Oregon, and you've played most, but not all of the ones I've played.  Some of the lesser known, lower tier courses I've played:

Big River
Pendleton CC (now Birch Creek)
Hood River G&CC
Gearhart Golf Links
Cross Creek
Elkhorn Valley

I think they made some changes at Gearhart since I played it.  Let me know what you think.  There were a few holes I didn't care for, but I want to go back.  We played in the "Nobody here is Irish" scramble on St. Patrick's Day many years ago.

Mcmenamin's is great!  The Irish Stout I could have for breakfast, lunch and dinner!!

I ran into this guy a few years ago that is attempting to play and rate every course in Missouri. Didn’t know he had a website about it until recently when someone sent me the link because there was a picture of me on the page.

He’s living the dream.

Here’s the link to his page if anyone is interested.

I’d certainly admire anyone who takes on this goal, but I wouldn’t do it. I’m more interested in quality or at least value over quantity. I don’t know how many public courses there are in NC, but undoubtedly some of them aren’t worth the cost of greens fees much less an overnight stay to me. My golf goal is to play every course of interest within about an hours drive plus any “bucket list courses” within an easy days drive. Just moved here about 1-1/2 years ago and I’ve played 16 courses, recently added Tobacco Road to my list - spectacular!

Every course in my state would be a tall task of dealing with all the yahoo’s and 5 hour rounds. Getting an invitation to play in the top 20 courses is the state is a large task as many are private. But through work and personal connection I am going to continue to chip away at bucket list type courses

The state board of tourism suggests North Carolina has slightly under 600 golf courses available for public play in some form or fashion.  I assume that means getting on places like Dormie and CC of North Carolina through booking agencies.  I have played probably 100 of them through the years.  I would definitely agree, several of them are not worth the effort.  I would also make the argument, North Carolina has more hidden gems than almost anywhere else as well.  Even without considering the Pinehurst area, North Carolina is blessed with some of the best golf this country has to offer.

My plan is to retire to Southern Pines but my goal is to be living there well before retirement.

I don't know which one but back in the mid-90's my girlfriend(now wife) worked for a construction company in ATL and the owner had a place in Cashiers NC on a golf course and I wish I was more of a golfer back then because it was absolutely glorious.

+1. We moved here from near Chicago summer of 2019, and the number of nice or better courses in NC is staggering by comparison, and the greens fees are about half here. We retired here for the weather and golf among other reasons...

I don't know which one but back in the mid-90's my girlfriend(now wife) worked for a construction company in ATL and the owner had a place in Cashiers NC on a golf course and I wish I was more of a golfer back then because it was absolutely glorious.

Wade Hampton is a few miles south of Cashiers.  It's well inside the top 100 of every ranking ever produced.  I think Golf Digest most recently had it ranked #25 in the US.

+1. We moved here from near Chicago summer of 2019, and the number of nice or better courses in NC is staggering by comparison, and the greens fees are about half here. We retired here for the weather and golf among other reasons...

Awesome; first place I moved to on the east coast was Winston-Salem working for RJR. Was only there for a year but have been all around the state from the outer banks to blue ridge parkway to asheville and Charlotte.

It's a lot like where I live now (MA) but with a more mild temperature - has beautiful fall foliage, awesome beaches and sweet golf courses. If I could convince my wife we'd be moving tomorrow.
