Odyssey One Black vs Kirkland KS1 vs PXG Blackjack

So I was lucky enough to win a brand new Odyssey One Black putter from the 2020 Donor Raffle. In honor of the people at MGS, I thought it would be good to give back a little bit and do an unofficial review of the putter as well as a face off between an old blade putter of mine (KS1) and my current gamer (PXG).

I'll start off with first impressions of the Odyssey One Black. I have not had a lot of experience with Odyssey putters so I was pleasantly surprised at the level of quality of this putter. It felt solid, looks good, and the head cover was top notch. Magnets on a head cover are always preferred over velcro as they stay together better and don't wear out over time. The head of the putter is a tad narrower from heel to toe as well as from face to back compared to the KS1. The white hot insert definitely felt softer than the milled faces on the other 2 putters. I'm not sure if I liked that or not.

I usually prefer the Super Stroke Pistol GT 1.0 grip with the counterbalance weight so the Odyssey grip wasn't to my liking. I don't know that it makes a difference in my stroke but I didn't care for the feel. Not a huge deal but if I were to use this more often, I'd probably replace the grip.

Kirkland Signature KS1

I used to game the Kirkland Signature KS1 putter simply because the price was right and I liked the way it looked. It comes in a 34.5" shaft which is too long for me so I have to choke down a little bit.

I replaced the stock grip on there with the aforementioned Super Stroke Pistol GT 1.0 grip with a 50g weight.

I have also replaced the stock weights in the putter with the heavier 20 gram weights. I like a heavier putter as I feel it is more stable.

PXG Blackjack

My current gamer is the PXG Blackjack with a 34" shaft. Up until this test, I thought I putted best with this putter. It looks great, feels premium, and I like the way it swings.

I've got the Super Stroke Pistol GT 1.0 grip with the 50g insert.

Compared

1493129554_PhotoJan20110257AM.jpg.4b3bf65fd00c6f6b302fe72bb1bae9a6.jpg

Here is a photo showing each putter and how tall they actually are. I thought that I saw a sticker on the Odyssey putter that said it was 34" long but I can't verify that anymore. Regardless, it feels and looks shorter than 34". When I was in my stance, my hand was at the top of the grip. I'm 5'10" so it's not like I'm tall. The KS1 is 34.5" and the PXG is 34". I think that, for me, 34" is the right length. That isn't pertinent to anything but I just felt like sharing it.

I decided to use my 9.5' Perfect Putting Mat and do 10 putts each from 4 different lengths: 3', 5', 7' and 8.5'. I allowed me a couple putts before keeping score so I could gauge the different lengths and feel. I started with the KS1, then the Odyssey, then finished with the PXG. Just for giggles, I redid the 8.5' distance with the KS1 just to see if I could replicate my original score.

So as far as raw data goes, this is it.

KS1

9@3'

10@5'

8@7'

[email protected]'

Total Putts Made: 37

Almost all of the putts I missed were on line but went long. Aim was good and rarely went off line.

Odyssey

8@3'

9@5'

7@7'

[email protected]'

Total Putts made: 32

I was less consistent with this putter. Coming up short and being off line wasn't uncommon when I missed.

PXG Blackjack

9@3'

8@5'

7@7'

[email protected]'

Total Putts made: 30

Most putts missed were short but on line. An occasional putt was pulled left.

The Final answer:

It would actually be good to go through this whole thing again and do it in reverse order to see if that changes anything. I was thinking that switching back and forth between the putters could affect my distance control. My PXG is the heaviest and my misses were short which would make sense as I was influenced by swinging the lighter putters. I went back and did 10 more putts with the KS1 and made "only" 8 putts this time. I had a perfect 10 the time before. That still ties for most putts made at that distance.

Maybe I need to do another round and then gauge whether or not I need to put that KS1 back in the bag?

Seems like KSig is a winner. Definitely wins on the birdie to par save lengths. Only other test is how close you lag on 10, 20, 30 putts.

Nice review & pics Peter!  Repeating in reverse order would be a good plan; not so keen on switching back and forth between putters though. I presume you added the blue lines to the K-Sig putter?

Will try to do the same test in opposite order.

I did draw those blue lines on the KS1. If you look at the balls you’ll see my alignment markings. I used the stencil to make a poor man’s version of the Callaway Triple Track.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I went and did the test again in opposite order. PXG first, then Odyssey, then the KS1. Results were interesting.

I made 3 fewer putts with the KS1 and 2 of those were at the 3' range. Left them short. SMH.

Made 4 more putts with the Odyssey than last time. I was perfect at the 3 and 5' ranges then fell off when it got longer.

Made 3 more putts with the PXG than last time. I only made 6 shots at the 8.5' range.

Finishing order this time was the Odyssey in first at 36. KS1 in second at 34. and the PXG was still last at 33.

Guess I will be putting the KS1 back in the bag. If I wouldn't have left the 2 3' putts short it would have been right where it was last time.
