PMookie
After my recent trial of the new 2021 drivers, and the trial of the “sledgehammer” that is now in my bag, it was plainly evident that I didn’t get “faster” with a lighter shaft. Robert Head, owner of Xphlexxx shafts, has been making this point with Long Drive competitors for years. Well, this morning, as I scrolled through Facebook, I see a post by TPI: “Less than 10% of 1200 golfers tested fastest with the lightest shaft.” Liam Mucklow from The Golf Lab So, when you go an do your fittings this year, don’t just assume you’ll pick-up speed because you switch from a 70g shaft to a 50g one. As TPI states in the post, robots may show faster, but humans aren’t robots!!! As TPI states in the post, robots may show faster, but humans aren’t robots!!!Very true. So much depends on how you feel the club loading and coming through the impact zone. For plenty of players feeling is lost with lighter setups and you’ll swing slower because you’re not as confident in it. aerospace_ray
I have learned this (lighter shafts don't always equate to increase performance) through trial/error over many years. Spent a small fortune it seems on lighter exotic shafts, club heads only to learn that I have a certain total weight driver and/or shaft weight range which I swing efficiently with consistent swing speed and center contact. null
Yup. It’s all about finding the weight, profile and stiffness that allows your body to sequence properly. An out of sequence swing is a slow swing PMookie, BNewton51, aerospace_ray and 4 others
GolfSpy MPR
I have found this to be true even in doing SuperSpeed work. While my light stick is most often slightly faster than my medium stick, I definitely lose the feel of the lighter club and struggle to sequence things properly for max speed. null
Another thought in many coaching circles is that a heavier shaft forces your body to engage the larger muscles, which means that there is potential for greater speed if those muscles are engaged properly (and proper sequencing isn’t sacrificed) GolfSpy_SHARK, sirchunksalot, aerospace_ray and 5 others

DiscipleofPenick
I recall this trend in the 90s. Make everything lighter. People were hitting the ball all over with no control. Then playing a 7 degree driver because the shafts had so much whip and high torque the ball launched far too high. I just remember caddying for these 35 year old guys with R flex 55 gram shafts and just hitting drop kicked hooks and fades all over. I'm sure you also hit the irons...I like the idea behind it for a certain demographic. Ping did a similar move with higher swing weight irons for seniors and ladies with their G series a few years back. To get back on track, the message here is good. As a Lot of guys already mentioned, find the weight that works with your mechanics.
