Apple Watch for a GPS on courses?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I have just been getting the last of my bits and bobs together / ordered for the season starting up soon.

I am in the Apple eco system, and thought I would look into the GPS aspects for the Apple Watch, to get rough indications of yardage on my local course.

I settled on the “free” version of “swing U” and will upgrade to pay for the premium if it’s any good.

anyone here used it at all yet? How is it for accuracy etc..?

I’ve been using 18 Birdies on my Gen 5 watch. It’s been more than accurate enough for me and usually matches up pretty well with course yardage markers.

I use Golf Pad in conjunction with my apple watch and it works great. Accuracy is always within a yard of anyone I'm playing with that has a range finder.  I think a lot of it depends on your local course and the data that the app has of the course, it needs to be mapped correctly.

Use Golf Pad as well.  It’s well thought out, accurate, and simply works.

Some folks say golf messes up a nice walk.  That’s not true, golf makes a nice walk bearable.

Something to be aware of, by default the Apple Watch will default to the phone's GPS rather than its own.  This may or may not be a problem based on how close you keep the phone to yourself.  To use the watch's GPS, you need to turn off the phone's.  Putting it into airplane mode is one way.

Yeah, I thought about that, I will keep my phone in my bag, on silent, and as it’s a carry bag, it will always be with me so the accuracy of the device should be within a couple of yards I would have thought.

I think most of the apps have some sort of watch accessibility. The only thing that could be an issue is if you're using an older generation apple watch. I have a gen 2 and 18 birdies is really rough getting anything up and going on there for me.

I do have a 4th gen, and for the most part it’s quite snappy. Will see soon enough for the course once it’s open again..
