Golfspy_CG2
COBRA GOLF LAUNCHES LIMITED EDITION RICKIE FOWLER PROTO IRONS Carlsbad, Calif. (January 25, 2021) – COBRA® Golf, a leader in golf club innovation, unveiled today its highly anticipated, limited-edition COBRA RF Proto Irons, a design collaboration with longtime COBRA ambassador and five-time PGA TOUR winner, Rickie Fowler. The RF Proto Irons are a replica of the head design that Fowler plays to provide golfers with an opportunity to experience what it feels like to play the same tour-caliber irons trusted weekly by one of game’s most popular players. The design is the result of multiple shape and spec revisions that evolved over the span of 12 months to get the perfect iron. The process involved COBRA engineers and longtime Director of Tour Operations, Ben Schomin, working with Fowler every step of the way, applying his design direction, turf-interaction feedback and aesthetic preferences to the overall design, which underwent 32 iterations before arriving at the final version, hence the Rev33 stamp. Interestingly, the entire set is designed around a 7-iron appearance, Fowler’s favorite iron shape. Atypical of most iron sets, which feature progressively rounded edges as you transition from the long irons to short irons, each RF Proto iron (4-PW) is designed with distinct sharp edges on the toe and topline area to suit Fowler’s eyes. They also deliver zero visible offset by ensuring that the hosel was developed with no taper. Perhaps the most striking feature of these irons is their distinctive, head-turning copper finish that was hand selected by Fowler after considering dozens of finishes. “We have been working with Rickie on these irons for quite some time, and we feel they represent a fitting tribute to our decade long partnership,” said Schomin. “We worked closely with Rickie to determine his favorite features of several of his previous sets that we were able to combine into one very sleek package. These are a must-own for better players who appreciate the finest of iron craftmanship or Rickie fans who would jump at the opportunity to own the same sticks their favorite player uses.” Like any Tour Player, Fowler demands perfection when it comes to shaping. With the RF Proto irons, COBRA delivers the ultimate precision iron, fit for a Tour player or better golfers. Each iron is forged two times from a soft 1025 carbon steel and is then machined using a 100% CNC milling process. The entire milling process takes a total of 155 minutes per iron and produces the most precise shape and specs without any inconsistencies. Like Fowler’s gamers, this CNC milling process is used to deliver the most exact specifications and shape that Fowler designed. To aid in pure shot making and offer some added stability, the RF Proto Irons, like his gamers, utilize a tungsten weight that is positioned out on the toe to better center the CG, per Fowler’s request. The result is an iron that delivers superior feel and precision throughout the set. For the collectors, the limited-edition RF Proto Irons are shipped in a high-end, custom box, which celebrates the partnership between Fowler and COBRA, complete with a card of authenticity, stamped by R&D and autographed by Rickie Fowler, for an unboxing experience like never before. The standard offering features KBS C-Taper shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet ALIGN grips equipped with COBRA CONNECT. A full selection of custom shafts and grips are also available. The standard set features 4-PW and retails for $2,499. Available in RH only. Beginning today they are available for pre-order through cobragolf.com and will begin shipping and be available at retail on Friday, January 29, 2021. TR1PTIK
I'd absolutely buy these if I had that kind of disposable income. Considering the milling process alone takes 20+ hours per set, I'd say the price is within reason. Whether or not anyone agrees with that or if Rickie still creates a big enough draw to sell at that price is a different story. Just one man's opinion... El Chivo
1. Thin topline in blades usually match a thinner sole. Pros? Cons? 2. Are there any thin topline clubs with a wider more forgiving sole? 3. Seems like there were way more experimental irons in the 80s vs now? Remember Cast Blades? 4. Would you game them or keep em on display? I dont get that since its not like Fowler is Greg Norman or will amass that kind of record. But they look like the cousins to the original hi-to milled. Would you game them or keep em on display? I dont get that since its not like Fowler is Greg Norman or will amass that kind of record. But they look like the cousins to the original hi-to milled. 1. Pros - better turf interaction for the better player. Cons - more likely to dig for the high-handicapper. Thin vs. thick toplines are more or less a determined by how the rest of the club is built though we have seen some clever ways to try and provide a top line that appears thinner than it actually is - different finishes, different radii, and so forth to blend and trick the eye into thinking there's less metal behind the ball. 2. Depends on your description of thin and wide I guess. I'm sure there's something out there if that's what you're looking for. 3. Experiments in the 80s probably have more to do with the availability of CAD and other design tools such as 3D printing. OEMs no longer have to build a club outright to see how it performs, now they also have access to highly sophisticated tools to determine how it will perform beforehand as well as just a larger library of lessons learned from experimental designs conducted in years prior. 4. If they weren't limited, I'd game them - at least for a while. These clubs are really too much for most golfers (including myself), but I'd love to give them a try. But since they are limited, I'd likely only ever hit them indoors and then put them up on the wall or something as a collector's item. I think the thin topline on these is more of a visual trick than anything that affects performance. You can see the top edge is heavily beveled to keep it out of sight at address. I'm sure this may have a minor negative impact on MOI but it's likely more visual than anything. I don't think you will find many irons with a thin topline and truly thick sole as that can look unsightly and potentially affect performance. The razor thin soles on true blades are to give pros maximum control but it certainly comes at the cost of forgiveness in many lies. The 80's were an interesting time for golf as designers started to get a better grasp of how the mass and dimensional properties of clubs impacted forgiveness. Additionally, technology was improving as TR1PTIK noted. Personally, if I had the disposable income to purchase a $2500 set of irons that no-one with less than a +2 handicap should attempt to use, I would probably take them out and give them some hits. Maybe even play a few rounds with them. Golf clubs have yet to hold value or appreciate and I don't see anything too special about these. The biggest problem with these is that they are not going to play well for 99.99% of golfers. The only mass-produced clubs that have held value historically are the Ping and Callaway beryllium copper irons of the past and even they are dropping.
