Building My 2021 Sticks - Sub70 699/699 Pro Combo Set

Recommended Posts

Thanks! The grips are Lamkin Sonar Tours. I really like the texture, nice blend between tacky/firm. It seems to encourage me to take a nice light and even hold without fear of losing my grip.
They are traditional taper though, so you'd need to have the grips built up with tape to get +4 size on the bottom hand. The regular Lamkin Sonars are less tapered (closer to a +4), but they only come in black/blue and not gray, unfortunately.
Great choice for grips! I've had these on my woods and hybrid for a little while and am about to do the rest of my set with them. Killer build man!

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

So back to your foray into custom club building, do you have any special loft/lie equipment or just pretty much order to spec and assemble?  I built custom flyrods for many years and loved doing it.  Lots of commonalities between that and golf club assembly... well pretty close anyway. Your thread has me thinking about giving this a try.

I just realized I never responded to this.

I don't have a loft/lie machine. They are quite expensive for good ones, and unless I was doing work for other people or buying cheap components that may be out of spec, I'd probably use it maybe once a year? The closest shop near me charges $30 to do loft/lie on an entire set, and the shop I frequent the range at in the winter actually bent my wedges for me last weekend for no charge. In the case of the Sub70s, I had them bend the irons one degree flat before shipping, which they did at no charge as well.

I would say, if you order quality components and don't need everything built to exacting specs, club work at home isn't too big of a deal. I'm happy to get my irons within a swing weight point on either side of a general target (D4-D6 seems to be a sweet spot for my irons), and my shaft cuts are consistent but probably up to 1/8" in either direction of target. I use a homemade club length ruler, and the only "professional" measurement tool I have is the cheapest manually swing weight scale Golfworks sells.

The best tool I've invested in is an air nozzle to put grips on with the air compressor. It is so much cleaner and easier than dealing with tape and solvent.

I think, given enough time, I may one day invest in a digital swing weight scale but I'm unsure if I'd spend more on other devices. Hopefully, these irons stay in my bag for a few years, and maybe next time I will go the route of larger OEM.

That makes sense on the lie/loft equipment - for sure if building for yourself and know your specs.  As a start, I think I'll invest in the nozzle for the air compressor.  What make/model did you get?  I'm guilty of holding out too long getting grips changed.  Plus, this is a great thing to have and skill to develop to help out friends.  "Grips for Beer LLC" immediately comes to mind 🙂.

I have something similar to this, but mine is a pistol grip: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Golf-Grip-Install-Air-Tool-All-Metal-Stubby-Gun-1-5-XL-Cup-fits-all-Grip-Sizes/281202176764?hash=item4178f4b2fc:g:V8UAAOxy4t1SeqJ~

The key is to use as low of air pressure as you can, and go slow. I've had good luck with all of the rubber grips I've tried, and so far have only ruined one of ~30 grips.

I'm not sure how the hybrid grips with cord in them will handle the air. I still do keep tape and solvent around just in case.

I lived a couple of years in Casper and know the feeling. Fort Collins had year 'round golf for the most part. Casper not so much, unfortunately. 👎

This year has been odd. Being in Laramie, with elevation of 7200', the winters are always challenging, but Fort Collins, which is where our club is, has gotten more snow and the weather has just been crappy and cold. I know Casper well, as I used to travel there for work. I don't think I could live there.

I suppose I haven't done a very good job of commenting on the actual playability, have I?

The Sub70s are very good. They are very forgiving, and the look is very sleek. Oddly, the non-Pro soles appear narrower to my eye than the Pro models. There is significantly more offset in the non-Pros, and after having played the Cobra SpeedZones for a season, I'm honestly struggling a bit adapting back to the Pros with less offset. I noticed I am setting up a little too open to the ball sometimes. Just something I need to watch out for.

Going to the TX MMT shafts was a good decision. I feel like my dispersion has improved a lot, and the feel is great. Also, my elbows and wrists thank me! The Sonar Tours are great grips, but I've noticed a few have twisted slightly (I should have probably used tape and solvent).

I would encourage anyone to look at Sub70 irons. They feel great, maintain a ton of ball speed on mishits and certainly won't hurt the wallet as much as the big OEMs.

Nice to hear about that, I am really thinking next set will be graphite. Getting started back up this spring with some mats the first few days I felt it in the wrists and elbows for sure.

Going to the TX MMT shafts was a good decision. I feel like my dispersion has improved a lot, and the feel is great. Also, my elbows and wrists thank me!

Edin, what are experiencing with distance; both carry yardage and, more importantly, consistency?  The lack of consistent yardage, after switching to graphite, was something one of the guys I play with in Yuma brought up.  I believe he tried Recoils.  Still waiting to get my ZX5's and MMT 80's into play.

I haven't had that experience with the MMTs so far. I seem to have solid gaps of 12 yards or so between clubs. I tend to bunch up a little at the top of the bag in the "real world," but that's my swing and not the clubs:

  • 4 Iron = 208 yds
  • 5 iron = 196 yds
  • 6 iron = 184 yds
  • 7 iron = 172 yds
  • 8 iron = 160 yds
  • 9 iron = 148 yds
  • PW = 136 yds
  • GW = 124 yds

Those are just guesses based on my time on the range and throwing down a handful of balls on course this morning.

@edingc How have the MMT 105tx shaft been working out with the wedges?  I'm just starting out with building up a 7iron with the MMT 105ts shaft and curious to learn more about how this shaft feels with the short game.

-Thanks, Todd

My personal thought is that they play very similar to the iron shafts. I know @mr.hicksta has MMTs as well and I believe he shafted his wedges with the 9/PW shaft and not the specific wedge shafts. Beyond a few extra grams of weight I can't say they play all that different. They are a slightly heavier swingweight as is my preference, but I didn't drop any length between the set GW and the 54 degree wedge.

Cody, now that you're season is well underway, are you still seeing some joint-saving benefits from the MMTs, and still getting consistent performance?

Due to recent injury problems I'm starting to investigate transitioning to a Steelfiber or MMT shaft in the offseason; just re-read this thread with renewed interest.  Thanks for documenting everything here.

Due to recent injury problems I'm starting to investigate transitioning to a Steelfiber or MMT shaft in the offseason; just re-read this thread with renewed interest.  Thanks for documenting everything here.

I have zero elbow/shoulder/wrist pain from the MMTs, and that's despite playing 3-4 rounds a week plus hitting range balls. I occasionally take some half swings in my basement off the carpet with an old Cleveland wedge and almost immediately start to feel aches and pains crop up from the steel shaft and less padding (mimics my winter range pretty well).

Performance-wise they are every bit as good as steel. I'm glad I went with the stiffer flex. When I'm off a little bit or get tense, my swing gets shorter and my transition gets more abrupt and these hold up just fine to that. I get a nice high ball flight without too much spin on my best shots. Distance has slightly increased throughout the bag even though my lofts are more "traditionally loft-jacked" (45 degree PW) than clubs I've played in the past.

The finish has held up well. I sometimes get a few marks going in and out of the bag but so far they've all rubbed off.

The only two negatives I've found with the MMTs are:

  • The butt end of the 105TX shafts is slightly larger than other shafts I've used. This has caused some issues with my grip and I've contemplated switching to undersized grips.
  • Swingweighting with tip weights is nearly impossible - I bought the thinnest tipped weights that I could find on the Internet and they still didn't fit in the MMTs.

Let me know if you have any other questions or if I didn't address something well enough!

Wow that’s fantastic that the joint pain was eliminated with the switch.  One of these days I’ll have to give MMT’s a shot in the irons.  I tend to like heavyish shafts, but see no reason to exclude graphite if the weight is there to keep my swing in sync.  Knowing that we’ve preferred similar shafts in the past means I’ll hopefully check out the TX flex as well.

MMTs do seem to have that space pretty well filled out with the TX at 113 and 125, and the then 125 Stiff coming in at 124

@edingc I am expecting my 699 Pro's also from the Preowned section of Sub70 on Monday! I believe our lofts are the same so wondering what the bottom end of your bag looks like? I believe the AW is 50*. I currently game the Kirkland wedge set which is 52,56,60...would 6* of loft separation be too much to go from 50* to 56*?

Hey Cody, not sure if you've commented on this or not yet.  I know you're getting along well with the 699's.  Didn't know if you've commented about the differences you feel between a player's cavity like that versus your experience with the Speedzone irons last year?

I have to think that the lofts weren't too far apart, maybe a bit in the longer irons, but they are obviously very different in construction.  For me the player's cavity design has been eye-opening.  They're definitely more forgiving then they let on from how they look in the bag.

Yes, I'm getting along much better with the Sub70s than I did with the SpeedZones. I didn't hate the looks of the SpeedZones, but the smaller profile of the 699s (even the non-"Pro" long irons) is much more pleasing to look at behind the ball. And whatever they fill the heads with makes them feel and sound really nice as well.

Direct comparisons are always so tough because as I've improved with practice/lessons things like carry distance have come up a bit. I carry my 699 Pro 9 iron about the same exact distance as the SpeedZone 9 iron, but there's 3 degrees of difference between the two clubs.

I think anyone shooting under 100 with regularity could play something like the 699s and not give up a ton of forgiveness to the more SGI-type clubs. There's a lot of tech packed into the heads to help out. They really are a nice blend looks/forgiveness/feel.

Certainly, SGI clubs have their place. I can imagine if you are very steep or maybe a slower swinger the larger sole and lower CG of something like the SpeedZones may be more beneficial.

Agree with you there @edingc. I shoot under 100 regularly and wanted to get into something with a little less offset and a thinner topline with some workability than my Mavriks. Callaway website says the Mavriks are built for players down to an 8 HDCP so technically I should still be playing those but we all know how golf swings change and the way you look at your clubs at address change. I liked the thinner topline of the 699 pros compared to my Mavriks. Mavrik on the left, 699 pro in the middle and the 639MB on the right ( I thought I could hit a blade and found out I could not xP) Also the sole is a bit thinner too. The offset on the 699 pros is about half of the Mavriks. My swing has developed to where I am hitting draws and my common miss is a hook or too much draw so I wanted the lower offset. Also like you mentioned, during my demo testing at the range on Mevo, I was really not losing distance even though the lofts are weaker on the 699 pros. Now this was with the stock KBS tour 105 stiff shaft which I felt forced me to take a much faster tempo backswing than I do with my True Temper Elevate 95 in stiff. I did manage to find a set of 4-AW of the 699 Pros with the black finish and KBS Tour 90 in stiff in their pre-owned section so I jumped on it along with the 10% Memorial Day discount on pre-owned. Jason recommended the Tour 90 as it would be closest to my Elevate 95. All in with the free shipping and no tax it came out to $540. Quite a deal for 8 clubs! Sorry to jack your thread a bit here but sharing my experience for anyone looking at the Sub70's. Plus like everyone says, Jason Hiland, the owner of the company really does answer all your questions and is personally available to all of his customers.

Update on this build:

I played these irons throughout 2021 without issue. They have been awesome to hit and feel great. The ball flies off the club face, and although the heads don't produce the most spin in the world when combined with the MMTs, I hit the ball high enough that I have no trouble holding greens as long as I use the right ball (MTB-X, ProV1x, Maxfli Tour X).

One thing I ended up not liking so much was the offset of the 4-6 699 heads, especially when directly compared to the 699 Pro heads in 7-GW. I replaced the 4 iron with a Cobra KING 4 Utility, which has proven to be more forgiving and has much less offset to my eyes.

I entertained thoughts about getting a new iron fit this upcoming summer. But after the last few weeks I decided that the Sub70s are too good to part with. Instead, I snapped up a Cyber Monday deal on a used set of 699 Pros to scavenge the 5 and 6 iron heads for my MMTs.

Unfortunately, after removing the heads, I've found the bottom bore to ground measurement of the 699 Pros is 1/4" less than the 699s (3/4" vs. 1"). This means my 5 and 6 iron shafts are slightly short of where they played in the 699s.

Compounding matters a bit, I apparently was pretty sloppy when putting together the 5 iron. It appears I left a shaft plug from the original shafts in the hosel on the 5 iron, so my BBTG measurement was extended by an additional 1/8". Because of this, the 5 iron shaft is closer to 3/8" short in the 699 Pro head.

I will have no choice but to get a shaft extension for the 5 iron. I am debating if I want to extend the 6 iron, or I've considered cutting the other shafts by 1/4" to match. When building clubs I measure to the ungripped end of the cut shaft, so my 37" 7 iron typically finishes around 37.25" when accounting for the grip. This means my swingweights are a little on the heavier side (D4-D5). I could shave 1/4" from everything and probably be in the D3 range.

I'll probably build up the 6 iron as is and see how it feels hitting some balls before making a decision.

I haven’t noticed any posts in this and after my round today I was thinking about doing exactly what you did originally. How much different is the offset visually from the regular to the pro? Are you still gaming them now? Sorry being lazy instead of checking the how’d you play thread.
