Calling All Golfers! Help With Collecting Data for Psychology Research Dissertation on Golf

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

I am a very passionate golfer and student of psychology at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, currently in my last year. I am always trying to improve my golf game, but I rarely see mentions on how to effectively increase your mental skills. Since I think more study into how we interact with golf as people could help with this, I am going to do a research paper on how we as people affect the game we play.

As such, I'm looking for some help with collecting data. This would involve a short personality questionnaire together with some information on you as a player (sex, age, handicap). I want to stress that this will be COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS. There is no risk of me knowing who you are from the information you'd give.

This research means a lot to me, and I would be extremely grateful to anyone willing to take it. Even just sharing the link with other golfers would be awesome should you not be willing to do the questionnaire yourself.

Should anyone be interested in the results once the study is finished, I would be more than willing to post the paper here in the subreddit after it is finished.

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to receiving your answers!

Thank you PMookie! I will keep that in mind in the future 👍

I shouldn’t say “too many” since the study may require it. Sorry. I should say it was a lot.

Good luck!!!!

No no, I appreciate the feedback 🙂 that's often the trade-off in making these questionnaires: enough questions to get good data, but not so many as to annoy your participants 😅 I'm very new in the research scene so I'm still learning!

Hi guys! Just thought I should give an update now that the questionnaire has been up for a whole week 🙂

So far, a whopping 143 people have answered the questionnaire. I am quite shocked and extremely delighted at the engagement it has gotten so far! Age has ranged from 18 all the way up to 73, with handicap scores encompassing the whole spectrum.

I wanted to make this update to say a huge, huge thank you to those that have taken the questionnaire so far (including the lurkers who haven't posted anything 😉 ). There hasn't been an incentive or reward to take it, other than out of the goodness of your heart and the betterment of science. Seeing so many people volunteering their time like this is incredibly touching. So thank you ☺️. Your efforts are what is making it possible for me to do this.

I also wanted to encourage more people to take it should they wish! The more people answer the questionnaire, the better the data which will equal to a better analysis. It may be greedy of me to ask, but please do take it if you can.

The link will remain live for quite some time still, but I wanted to make sure you all know how grateful I am and how fantastic you all are 🥰

Done.  I do not think that the number of questions was at all excessive, at least assuming that they are all relevant to the goal(s) of the study.  I look forward to seeing the results and conclusions of the study.

As a scientist with a Master’s Degree, I understand what you are doing and appreciate how difficult it is. (I peer review for selected publications.) The statistics alone are enough to drive a person mad.  The bottom line is that I would be more than happy to support you by taking your survey.
