Definitely intrigued by this, but in the spirit of DIY (and cheapskateness and product unavailability) .. I put a "Flat Ball" (could also use a ball marker, poker chip, etc.) about 2 inches in front of the ball - the goal, of course, to make that the low point of your swing ...

Thanks for the diy tip. Did the same thing but with my daughters Pom poms instead of a ball.

@GolfSpy MPRDid you notice after your first few uses a specific pattern?  I've heard that most do hit the ball a bit more fat than they realize, but tend to get away with it.  Just curious on your experience?

Good question, and I won't have a good answer for you. I'm currently doing a lot of swing tinkering right now. If I got the board and had "my swing," I'd likely hit a bunch and see what tendencies emerge. But for me, one of the reasons I got the board was to see what happens to my impact with different changes that I'm working on.

I tend to hit fat on the divot board... But the top surface also sits 3/4" off the floor and I'm usually in my living room in bare feet. So that's about 1" above a flat lie compared to with shoes.

When I try to strike 3-4" in front of the ball, I often miss the mat entirely. Probably an issue with casting and a poor pivot.

Seeing this thread reminds me I need to check the thickness of my hitting mat to see what the difference in it and the Divot Board is. I'm planning on sitting it just off the mat to hopefully even them up, or at least get them fairly close.

I'm still waiting for it to ship, and USPS nonetheless. It'll probably be a week or two before I see it. I can't wait to use it, though.

I posted over in the "What Equipment are You Thinking About" thread that mine arrived today. It just so happened I got off work early today and I took it out for a trial run. My first shot wasn't great, but shows where my normal miss is. 20210222_152306-01.jpeg.055638a962345034c9e826e3d35e5c15.jpeg

Kinda looks like an egg.

I spent thirty minutes with it and the variety of shot patterns was astounding.20210222_152353-01.jpeg.6e5469e5ae13e7527801c80c3c05b2ba.jpeg

That one was nice along with this one:20210222_155001-01.jpeg.d489a26e2679389619ab90a6dbfd82ac.jpeg

Then somehow I ended up with this one and it still baffles me. 20210222_154106-01.jpeg.a7ff0f8ef85611a04e8f5fba32571f2f.jpeg

I'm going to say I think I might have possibly topped that one, or missed it all together. I spent time figuring out what I might be doing and I think I might have an issue with swaying. I know it's a common problem when thinking about turning the hips to interpret it as to sway. I spent time working on thinking about rotating my body around my spine and started to see less drastic misses.

It's going to take a lot of work, but I'm hoping to see more consistency in the coming weeks and months.

I tried to do the drill I've had Kirke do, with Kirke calling out target locations in my backswing. I'm not good at it. But I have been working at a similar but less difficult drill. I'll take my stance and then try to hit the beginning and end of each of the yellow lines (so that covers toe and heel, fat and thin), and then I'll try to strike the middle. I'm finding that it is definitely increasingly my skill at striking the board in the right place when I want to do so.

That sounds like a good drill and would build an awareness of club control. I'll have to remember that one.

Bonus feature: you use different parts of the board, which gives you longer before you have to replace the hitting surface.

That's just smart, I have a feeling the hitting surface will last a while, but taking advantage of the whole board would extend the life of it.

Have you hit a fairway wood off it? I'm needing to work on that pretty bad.

So, I couldn't help myself and had to step back outside and give it another try. I have been sitting around with a thought in my head to try where is attempt to mimic the pressure in my feet with a Down Under board. Well...that didn't work.

I then tried relaxing my arms and letting my body do the work. It's so easy to let the arms take over thinking it'll lead to better results. As soon as I relaxed, I saw better strikes that began at or in front of the ball.

Oh yeah... I've been working and working and .... and working on that!

One thing that's helped *me* (emphasized - may not help you, nor anyone else) - and referring to the pics earlier of a Flat Ball in front of the actual ball - is to focus on a spot in front of the ball and make that spot your strike point on the board.

And back on topic -

I'm still loving my Spornia net. Lots of hits and no wear. I have uncovered one teeny defect in mine, though - on the back, and where the netting attaches to the nylon along the bottom, there was a short stretch where the netting was not glued/bonded to the nylon ... I found it after a bad mis-hit and the ball got stuck in there!

I'll give that a try, I tend to focus too much on the back of the ball to much. I've been working on looking at the front, but on days like today, I tend to get a little sloppy. I might have to invest in some of those flat balls for this particular practice. I think having something tangible to focus on might help. I truly appreciate the advice.

I am sure there is a way and I have thought about that option.   You can buy the mat via the website and the DIYer in me says there has be be a way to cheaply replicate the frame.    But I don't know what the actual may looks like;  the frame may provide support that prevents it from coming apart.

Your wrists are not going to enjoy hitting balls off plywood over the long term. You would need to find some piece of rubber or dense sponge. I think it would be safe to assume the harder the material under the mat, the faster it will wear out if there is less give under the sequins to absorb force from the contact and flex a bit.

If cost is a concern, place a towel a few inches behind your ball flat on the ground or use something to mark a line to judge if you are hitting it fat. Use tees or balls for a gate drill to avoid heel and toe strikes.

Here's an idea of what the frame looks like. I didn't want to take the mat out, as it has tape on the back of it to hold it in. It's a pretty well made piece, I particularly like the studs in the back that keep it from sliding on the ground or on a hitting mat. 20210308_191737-01.jpeg.b528872130e9df9e3ddd1d6477ef2904.jpeg20210308_191729-01.jpeg.1a4e744a8cda3e72f6c2e91cabdcdd5a.jpeg20210308_191713-01.jpeg.50b63d363592678189abff9dae1f73df.jpeg

You can probably use a thin piece of plywood then glue a piece of the foam gym floor mat pieces to it. (the ones in Lowes or Home Depot that look like a puzzle piece) Obviously cut to size. Then you could use double sided tape or Velcro to hold the divot mat in place. I would then drill a hole in each corner to accept a long golf tee to keep the board in place while swinging outside.

Sorry couldn't help myself.  I'm a rigger!

Have you checked out the Acu-Strike?  Similar concept- see where the sole impacted with the ground.  Though I have to say, your sequins are much more obvious and clear.  This is more like old time velour that stands up or lays flat. You brush it back flat with the sole of your club after a shot.  They make two version, one with an inch of foam underneath (so you need a stance pad) and one super thin that you peg to the ground with some long tees.  The paint marks to indicate ball position definitely wear over time.  They do make it clear however that you can, should and I do, hit a ball off of it.

Yeah, I caught this one fat - for demonstration purposes of course...

Really liking the mat to hit little chips taking the club shaft back to parallel to ground to work on clean contact with no ball indoors. Also for back to 3/4 swings with lead arm parallel to ground. Easy to grab a club in the living room and make a couple swings to dial in low point and get the feel of a good transition and not hanging back.

Mine arrived yesterday. It works well. Really shows you how poor of a ball striker you are. I was all over the place and actually the worst when I had the planemate on. Tried it with a variety of clubs and it’s a keeper. This should definitely help me low point my longer clubs easier. Really should be focusing on chipping with it first but go big or go home. Here is a picture of my first strike on it using my PW (first actual swing missed it entirely). Was mostly downhill from there.
