I still have five 3-sleeves of MTB-X's that I wish I didn’t have, but I'm too cheap to give them away, even though the last thing I need in winter is a very firm ball (like the MTB-X). Can't wait to break out my MTB-Black's again...

I see your struggling Having those MTB-X,  I be happy to take them away from you.. i don't want you to carry that burden!! 🤣

Late to the thread.  Lots of great info here!  I've only tried the MTB Black and found them very similar to Pro V1 for all around performance and very much the same trajectory.  I'm still working through the "best ball for me" testing and only recently starting to see some differences on wedge shots.  The Snell products definitely fit into the best value category and are on my short list if I decide to go all in on a specific ball and buy bulk.

I hope whoever the person is that orders (presumably uses/loses) 5 dozen a month relocates to courses in my area 👍.

My friend invest in Snell at this point, lol.. he would not go look for a ball. if it hits in the woods, he would just leave it and drop a new one. According to him is not worth looking ..

Right or wrong, I almost always call off the search after 60 seconds myself even if it seems findable. I don't want my player partners, or self, to get cut up or bit. And for really errant shots I don't look at all...

Cut or bit??? Where do you live/play? I live in Southern California and play in courses where there are signs saying "Beware of Rattlesnakes". Never came across one but I did see a giant snake basking in the sun in the middle of the fairway one time (not a rattlesnake, looked like a boa constrictor from far away, big and muscular) not sure if those live in this area lol. If you are on a budget go look at the post from @chisag in this forum. Golfdiscount.com is having a sale on last year model balls 19.99/dz for TP5 practice balls. Cheaper than the Snell or Vice even with the bulk discount!

  • 5 weeks later...

I’ve been a Snell MTB Black player for just over 2 years, and I absolutely love the ball. For me the ball flight, especially off of the driver, is perfectly ideal for me. Never made the switch or bundled my orders with the MTB-Xs, so I don’t have an answer there regarding ball flight. I do see that Snell is limiting their orders to 2 dozen at the moment, but eventually I’ll take the leap and buy a dozen Xs.

Made the mistake of buying Srixon Z Stars last June during their Father’s Day BOGO sale, and it just did not fit my swing profile ... absolutely hated that ball.

Did buy a box of Titleist Prov1s at 4 dozen for $149 at DSG. Really nice presentation. But man, the biggest difference with the Titleist to the Snells is green side spin ... the ProVs just stop on a dime. 👌🏼 However, I would say the Snells may be a hair longer off the tee than the Titleist.

How much run out are you getting in the MTB-x vs the prov1 for green side action?

It’s hard to say exact numbers, but the final ball position of the Snell vs its green side ball-mark is a bit further out/forward relative to the ProV1.

And I’ve seen this complaint on a few other threads, (not sure if it’s new to their 2021 ball updates) but the ProV does scuff a bit more easily than the Snells.

I use the MTB-X.  The Pro-V1 might have a tad more spin on the greens, but I haven't noticed a significant difference to make me think about switching permanently to the Pro-V1.  And I don't say that because of the monetary difference.  I would pay the difference if it made a difference in my game.  Your mileage may vary, of course.

As someone who plays the Snell and the prov1 for myself I don’t notice a huge difference in performance. I do get a bit more distance off the tee. Stopping power on the green is great for me at least but I do have a steep descent angle. Maybe because I associate price with quality I do feel better about the snell vs prov1 when making purchases

100% agree. Snells, IMO, are without a doubt the best value ball out there. And I wouldn’t even so much put it as value, Snells are just great golf balls. Period.

Nice to see Snell and Vice putting the slightest bit of pressure on the big OEMs. A lot of them have done the 4 dozen for the price of 3 deals as of late.

Started the season using MTB-X and am really liking it.
I've played the PV1, PV1X, & various Bridgestone versions in the past and these are right there with them at a good price.

Haven't tried the black yet so I ordered 2 dozen of the testing packs (MTB-X + Black) and am anxious to get them both out on course.

At this point I cannot see myself switching over to a different ball. I'm sold on these.

I also ordered a buddy (who is a bit of a high hc) some GET SUM and I'll be curious to see how he gets on with those.

I switched to Snell MTB-X from ProV last fall after doing some comparisons when I didn't see any difference in holding greens or driver distance or feel between the two.  I used the Black last night and its too small a sample size just yet but my driver length seemed longer while my wedge shots seemed to come up a little short.  A couple PW & GW shots I was loving while they were in the air surprised me they were 5 - 7 yards short when landing.  It might have been wind gusts or elevation playing a part in those shots but I will be paying attention to it going forward.  I didn't notice any difference in holding greens with the Black, wedge shots were stopping within a foot like mine usually do and I had a 23* hybrid jump back about 1' from the ball mark but I think that was head wind aided.  Chip shots around the green had the roll out I expected.

For me the MTB-X is longer than the Prov and TP5X, but I feel i get more spin around the greens from the TP5X that the MTB-X, there is a little bit more run out. I did hit some good wedges there other day and it was grabbing a lot more. (Could be there is actual grass again on the greens)

I thought about testing out the Black again, but i have 5 boxes of MTB-X and that will probably last until next year. SO I will wait until then to evaluate again.

You certainly won’t be disappointed with the Snells.

I will add this about high handicappers and golf balls ... played in FL over family spring break with a good friend that lives in Tampa. He’s relatively new to the game, is an athlete, but hasn’t yet broken 100. He’s a big solid dude with a really high swing speed, he plays Sub 70 699 irons with Nippon Pro 125 x-stiffs.

But get this, since he loses balls often, he mainly plays Top Flites, Pinnacles, Callaway Warbirds, etc ... and rightfully so, golf balls aren’t cheap. Yet almost every time, his ball would just balloon into the air with the cheaper 2-piece balls. After 4-5 holes, I tossed him my MTB Black and the ball flight was night and day different with a much more penetrating, non-ballooning ball flight. We were both equally shocked.

He broke 100 for the first time and had tons of new badges on his Grint round. I def helped him with course management, but the ball change was significant. He actually loves the game more now.

If you have a 110+ driver swing speed, no matter the handicap, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not playing a premium ball.

100% agree with@mikeanthony; you are costing yourself strokes if you swing the driver 110+ or a 7 iron over 85+ and use a non urethane cover ball. Snell makes a great ball, period. Easily in the same league as ProV, TP5, Tour BX, or ZStar. I found the the MTB-X last year; it’s long off the driver and irons and I like how it feels with the putter. I’m currently testing the -Pro V1X and the chromesoft XLS against it; so far I’m not seeing much of a difference except for green side spin. It doesn’t have as much green side spin as the chromesoft xls but for 95% of the green side shots I play, I want the ball to release not check up. Get the sampler pack, and play whichever you prefer, the black and the x are both great balls.

I've chimed in elsewhere, and I'm just a sample size of 1, but your wedges coming up short doesn't surprise me. My experience with the MTB-X was that it was awful in the wind, clearly the worst I've experienced in recent years. On my last try with them I hit a couple of shots a second time with other balls and each time got much more predictable results. I've got a few left I'll use up when it's calm, but I won't be buying any more.

Good to know your experience, I will watch closely how they play.  I should clarify, the distance difference I was noticing last night was between the MTB-X I had been playing and the MTB Black I played last night.  The Black seemed a few yards short compared to the MTB-X on a few full PW and GW shots.  It might not have been a ball issue since a few 1/2 & 3/4 wedge shots were pin high as expected (3 birdies worth in the 9 hole league - woohoo!!).

I am testing both the black and the X, and I have to say I think I am in the minority with liking the black better.  The black feels a bit softer to me and I notice more spin around the greens.  Distance wise, I don't notice one being longer than the other.  The X has a more "clicky" feel as it should since it's a more firm golf ball.  Launch is also pretty comparable.  I tend to launch the black a bit higher as well but, again, nothing considerably more than the other.  I just like the feel around the greens (inside 100 yards) better with the black.  Good luck

I’ve never noticed a difference in trajectory. No.

ive played the black and the X, with last season being entirely with the mtb-x... it’s a good ball and a great value.

I moved back to the Bridgestone, though. I hit it farther (enough to be noticeable) and think it’s a touch more friendly to my game around the green.

im trying to shoot as low as possible this year, so the extra money on a marginally better ball made sense...

I play the Mtb-x , but I’ve tried the black as well. The only difference I notice is the black feels noticeably softer; doesn’t fly or spin any different for me, just a softer feel on putts and partial shots.

I used the Black again in last nights league play and the wedge yardage was 'normal', no surprises with wedge shots coming up short.  So it must have been either wind or i didn't hit them as flush as I thought last week.

  • 3 weeks later...

I got a test pack for X-mas this year and settled on the Black

I went with the Black for a softer feel around the green and off of the putter. The X is maybe a yard longer than the Black.  The feel off of the putter was the difference.  I was a Bridgestone player, but the feel off of the putter was a little harsh.

I find this ball to be great in the wind. I was playing an OnCor Elixr that the wind was eating up, so I switched to a Snell and it was night and day.

I just received 2 dozen Black in yellow

The yellow is the easiest to see yellow I have ever played with.

This ball is the best deal in golf.

Seems the test packs are sold out.  I am a BS RX player as I need a lower spinning ball off the tee.

Irons and wedges I spin it just fine.

I ordered a dz Black in Yellow and a dz X in White, makes it easier to differentiate when I test them on the fairway.

Always looking for some extra yards off the full bag...
