Question for Snell Players

I've been playing the MTB Black for about a year now, love the ball but at a 18 handicap, I'm wondering if I should try the Get Sum ball.

Since my buds know I only play Snell, I was given two found Get Sum’s. In the past I’ve thrown them out but I played these two just to see what they’re like. My experience was as expected, they go just as far but they don’t spin as much with irons. If you rely on checking the ball up greenside you’re giving up something with the Get Sum’s. But if your stock approach includes some run out, like many lower swing speed players, Get Sum’s should work well enough. I didn’t notice much difference in feel, not ‘like hitting a rock’ as with some 2-piece balls, but I only played two balls. FWIW

The snell MTB-x for me plays very similar to a ProV1. No significant higher launching. Great spin around the green. I do feel that it compresses well when struck in the sweet spot

The more I try new balls the more I realize a lot of these tests vary depending on the golfer. I play both the X and Black. I’ve noticed more stop and drop with the black. It feels like it compresses a lot more off the driver but haven’t seen a lost in distance. The X I still really love but I don’t really see the extra spin. I like the sound of the black on my putter better and probably will go to that one more full time I think.

if you want a crap ton of spin, grab the Kirkland Costco ball... holy smokes, I was playing the Lee Trevino hole at the Stadium Course the other day and ripped it back about 25 feet.

@Airjenks Welcome to the group -- you're correct that the tests are very much golf dependent.  None of us hit the ball the same way and none of us should expect the ball the respond the same way as it does for someone else.  You have to find the ball that you like and play it.  With regards to the Kirkland ball -- which one?  Like many "store-brand" products, the manufacturer changes with the best bid.  The Costco Kirkland ball is no exception -- for various reasons, the manufacturing of that ball changed, not only by who was doing the manufacturing, but the design of the ball, as well.  The original balls were exceptional.  The newer ones not so much, although I do know some really good golfers that play them, not so much for the performance, but more-so because of the value.

I just started testing the MTB-Black and MTB-X against my gamer. One thing I noticed during my first round was the MTB-X appeared to have a lower trajectory. I've looked at various reviews/tests and Snell marketing, but have yet to see anything to indicate that there should really be much difference (in trajectory) between the two at all. Anyone else notice a significant difference?

Richard, I play the MTB-X on the regular, MTB-Black spins less, MTB-X spins more, it flies pretty standard to the Prov-1. The Black is firmer than the X.

Nope. The MTB-X does spin a little more than the Black but the MTB-X is also firmer than the MTB. I’ve played dozens of both but don’t take my word for it - Snell and MGS confirm.

The MTB X is designed to be firmer and slightly higher iron spin than the MTB Black, the difference in driver spin is negligible by design. That’s how they play to me, and consistent with online objective comparisons I’ve seen. If you’re getting more spin with Blacks vs X it’s likely it’s not the ball?

I’ve been playing Snell exclusively since 2017 beginning with the original MTB, now I play Blacks. I tried a dozen Reds in 2018 (too much spin) and just finishing off two dozen MTB-X’s. I’m going back to the MTB Black ASAP (I don’t need or want more spin and prefer a little less firm, Blacks are by no means soft, just a tick softer than X).

Yeah, I think at this point I've settled on the MTB-X. I was worried about how the extra spin might impact the short game, but it's really been a predictable ball.

After getting a few more rounds in, it's definitely become more clear that both balls share a similar trajectory as well so my original question about that has certainly been put to rest.

Now to work through the current stock of golf balls I have - MTB-Black, MTB-X, Bridgestone XS, and prior-gen Vice Pro.

I still have five 3-sleeves of MTB-X's that I wish I didn’t have, but I'm too cheap to give them away, even though the last thing I need in winter is a very firm ball (like the MTB-X). Can't wait to break out my MTB-Black's again...

I have been digging the MTB-X this winter in most my rounds. What i love the most is all the greenside control. i can pretty well predict my touch shots. Bump and runs on the other hand are hit and miss due to the firmness and the cold.

@CarlH thank you! Been following the forums for a bit now and figured I would finally get my feet wet.

yes the original Kirkland was pretty amazing (if you could find it)... I’m talking about the most recent one. Easily the most spin I’ve ever seen,

Late to the thread.  Lots of great info here!  I've only tried the MTB Black and found them very similar to Pro V1 for all around performance and very much the same trajectory.  I'm still working through the "best ball for me" testing and only recently starting to see some differences on wedge shots.  The Snell products definitely fit into the best value category and are on my short list if I decide to go all in on a specific ball and buy bulk.

I hope whoever the person is that orders (presumably uses/loses) 5 dozen a month relocates to courses in my area 👍.

My friend invest in Snell at this point, lol.. he would not go look for a ball. if it hits in the woods, he would just leave it and drop a new one. According to him is not worth looking ..

Right or wrong, I almost always call off the search after 60 seconds myself even if it seems findable. I don't want my player partners, or self, to get cut up or bit. And for really errant shots I don't look at all...

Cut or bit??? Where do you live/play? I live in Southern California and play in courses where there are signs saying "Beware of Rattlesnakes". Never came across one but I did see a giant snake basking in the sun in the middle of the fairway one time (not a rattlesnake, looked like a boa constrictor from far away, big and muscular) not sure if those live in this area lol. If you are on a budget go look at the post from @chisag in this forum. Golfdiscount.com is having a sale on last year model balls 19.99/dz for TP5 practice balls. Cheaper than the Snell or Vice even with the bulk discount!
