I tend to change driver every 1-2 years. Irons maybe every 2-3 years. I think last year was the first one in a while where I really didn't change anything until the very end of the season when I added the Bertha Mini to the bag. I'm very cost conscious when it comes to buying clubs, I mean it's a hobby and it can be an expensive one, at that. So I'll usually look for closeout deals or good used values.

I forgot to mention earlier, one guy at my home club is addicted to new equipment.  One year he used 19 different sets of irons.  I think he does buy and sell a good bit on the secondary market, he's not buying everything brand new, but I'm certain he's not breaking even.   He's a good player, scratch to 1, and each new set of clubs is the best ever.  The year he used 19 different sets, he started the season as a 1 handicap.  19 times he "improved" his equipment, and he finished the season as a 1.

I'd be curious to see what happened if he settled into something, for say, 6 months?

Watch 2nd swing golf and one of the famous British guys plus many others they tested PING EYE 2 from mid 1080,2 to the new PING G425 very little difference just a bit better in accuracy and 15 yards longer (if going buy iron number but not by loft) but not perfectly gapped i.e 10 yards a club like the EYE2s.

I've settled into my setup fairly well in the last 18 months.

The only changes were minor tweaks with a driver shaft, looking to go from S flex to X flex in the same shaft. I've been playing my driver since summer of 2019, and do have a newer model of the same driver head as a backup. Fairway woods are the same.

Irons have been in play since spring of 2019 and I will not be changing those out until the grooves are shot.

Wedges are all the same though I do swap them out based on lofts, depending on where I am playing; though I'm set on 50, 54, 58. The change here would maybe be 56, 61.5.

The putter is set for 2021.

I think technology is only one aspect of making changes though. There has to be a comfort level and a trust level with your equipment to play your best golf. Bad days, weeks, months happen, but I know that I will not be putting a new set up into play going into the club championship.

But.... that was before I stumbled into this den of ill-repute and hoard of out-of-control Club-Ho's 🤣.  My barely 2 years old G410's are dangerously close to being replaced and the G410P just got a new appendage.

Got into a discussion with my wife about club tinkering and such and got me thinking. How often do you buy new equipment?

Define "new"?

Define "equipment"?

🧐😉🤔

New can mean new to me (pre-owned) or brand new. When you originally posted the question did you have one definition in mind?

Equipment could mean anything in the bag, a few items or categories of clubs, or everything including the bag.

I flow things in and out of my bag in different intervals based on the category.

  • Putter - I'm always a sucker for a different vintage flatstick (Anser, Bullseye, 8802 style) for a few weeks, but my Evnroll mallet always seems to work it's way back in the bag for the last 2+ years.
  • Wedges - these seem to have only lasted about 9 months before I start looking at other options in either the used Cleveland 588 Tour Action Raw or new Maltby TSW wedges to replace my current gamers: Cleveland Tour Action Raw 588 51°, Maltby M+ Tour 54°, and Maltby MG Tour Forged DBM 60°. The Cleveland is a recent addition in the last couple months. The Maltby Wedges I have had for almost 2 years but it took a lot of in and out of the bag to land in these two vastly different designs.
  • Irons: been gaming my used Ping G2 irons for just over a year and change. Lots of different sets have wandered in and out, but all used
  • Utility/Hybrid: added NEW Maltby KE4 3 and 4 driving irons about a year ago which I took out of my bag recently to go with the iron set 4i and the Titleist 816 4 hybrid that had been in my bag for about 2 years.
  • Fairway Wood: still gaming my 5w for 3+ years and no 3w
  • Driver: over 2 years with my Callaway XR16 and looking to get fit into a used club sometime this summer

All that to say, I will have only been golfing 4 years in June this year. I am a self proclaimed Club Ho with over 5 complete bags. I am starting to get into club building where I have a set of Cleveland TA3 Form Forged irons and shafts that I will be assembling soon.

I have no idea how to answer your survey ❓ question ?

Honestly... When I'm bored and fancy trying something different. But I always buy used so its new to me, not new new.

I do A vs B testing and then send the loser back out into the wild.

I am however a bit of a hoarder of shafts.

I tend to swap out my equipment when I start to lose confidence in the equipment...because it is NEVER my fault, it's ALWAYS the clubs!!!!  I tend to keep irons for about three years on avg while drivers I will keep much longer.  It's hard for me to find a driver I like and when I do, it will stay for about 4-5 years.  Don't get me wrong, I will test out drivers and hit them but they don't change too much in the performance department for me to justify spending so much on them more frequently.  Wedges last me about two years only due to wear and fairway woods will last about 4 years as well.  Putters, now putters I can change out yearly, sometimes monthly.  Just need a new look sometimes.

Haha, that made me smile.

My bags are:

  1. My Gamers
  2. Loaners for when friends come around: Callaway XR Driver, Taylormade hybrids and Supersteel BubbleShaft irons
  3. Ladies set - for the off chance: Maltby Logic Irons, lady 3 wood, white bag
  4. Vintage-ish set of Wood woods Ping EYE2 Driver, ISI Tour 3w, 5w and Hogan Irons, Bullseye Putter or Ping Anser
  5. Blades/Players Bag: Titleist 735.cm irons or Cleveland TA3 Form Forged, with Xstiff woods and utilities - one can dream
  6. I also have a Sunday bag with random Antique hickory clubs that I take out a couple times a year

I have another 2-3 full sets coming Friday... Not sure if this is a problem yet. 🤭

I recently started playing in a regular basis after an 8-10year hiatus.  In the past year I have been seriously tinkering with my bag.   I have committed my current bag setup till at least end of this 2021.

I started playing again in jun 2020. Here is bag evolution..

Driver.

Callaway x series tour 9.0

Epic flash sz

Mavrik

Epic flash

Mavrik max

Mavrik sz current player.

Irons

Steelhead x-14 3-sw

Diablo edge r 4-pw

Mizuno JPX919 HOT METAL 5-LW Current players

Putter.

Odessey white hot #7

Idesseybtriple track 7 current player.

I also added some fairway woods this year that I absolutely love to hit. They really fill some gaps for.me.

Mavrik sz 3w

Great off tee for doglegs or windy conditions.  I can get 250yds but really try to turn this one.  I do also hit it off Fairway when really far out from poor drive.

Mavrik sz 5w

Off tee on 200 yard par 3' s or shorter dogleg.

Defintely on long approaches, around 200.

Mavrik 7w

Haven't gamed this one yet, but plan is to swing easy with 5i up to around 190, 7w to fill gap between 190-210.

I was never a fairway wood guy, always played 3i then 4i to 220, but inhave learned that I am more consisten with a smoother less aggressive swing, so my plan is to eas back a little on irons and use fairway woods, to get the distance when  needed.

I'm guilty of swapping a lot since I joined MGS, but that has more to do with getting better overall and also becoming more knowledgeable about clubs and my swing through lessons and multiple fittings.

When I first got back into golf seriously in summer 2018, I had a set of 15-year-old Nike irons and an older Cobra driver. That winter (right around the time I joined here), I upgraded everything with stuff from eBay, but purchased some ill-fitting stuff not knowing how I swung the club.

As I've spent more time focused on my game, my swing has improved a lot both in technique and speed. The improvement in technique (getting shallower AoA with longer clubs) led to my latest changes to my driver, and my aching elbows/wrists led to going to graphite in my irons this off-season.

Obviously, there were a few "non-essential" purchases in there along the way. My birthday is right around the holidays so I always get a little bump in spending cash at once and that is dangerous when looking at golf equipment. Additionally, my cost to actually play/practice golf is quite low since my course membership is very generous. I get discounted range balls and lessons at my practice facility through my employer as well.

I'm happy with my current bag (that doesn't mean it's set in stone), but for now I'm more focused on finding some well-fitting golf attire and a good pair of golf shoes as I've been disappointed in mine.
