before adding tip weights should the length of the weight going past the shaft. should the shaft be trimmed to accommodate that extra length from the tip weights as some weights i see are about 1/4 longerpast the shaft.

Butt Trimming to length is usually done after the club is assembled. So yes, the amount the tip weight extends beyond the tip is taken into account when measuring and butt trimming.

If you are talking about tip trimming, you should not factor in the tip weight.
