My Next Golf Trip - King Island Tasmania

Recommended Posts

Our Sponsors

Booking a 3 day trip to King Island, which is in Bass Strait, between Victoria and Tasmania.

Day 1 is fly over (about 45 minutes) and then play Ocean Dunes https://www.oceandunes.com.au on Friday afternoon.

Saturday is 36 holes at Cape Wickham https://capewickham.com.au/  In carts for both rounds, with a good gap for lunch in between rounds.

Sunday back to Ocean Dunes for a morning round before flying home.

I will try to get some good photos and write a review of both courses. Cape Wickham is rated 2nd in Australia (after Royal Melbourne,21st in world)  and Ocean Dunes 15th in Australia so expectations are high.

Flights, accomodation and golf is looking like costing AUD1150-1300, about USD900-1000

Would love to see photos - I've always wanted to play there.  FYI, also go a little further south and play Barnbougle both the Dunes and Lost Farm courses just outside of Bridport. Those are my two favorite Aussie courses and are routinely listed as in the top 50 in the world.

For those of us who subscribe to the Golfer's Journal, there's an article about King Island in the current issue, with a bunch of photos.

Happy to share.  For those who've never taken a look, Golfer's Journal is in its 4th year of publication, and to me is the premier golf publication available.  Great photography, great writing, very limited advertising, and recently the subscription has included gift certificates from Linksoul that exceed the cost of the subscription.  If anyone would like to subscribe, I'll be happy to provide my referral code.  You'll get an extra issue, and so will I.

Barnbougle is most definitely going to happen, I thought I’d play there before King Island but a mate organised this trip so I jumped at the chance.

Some pics to tease you. At the Dunes course they have 2 bedroom luxury cabins,, a 9i from the course. IMG_3761.jpg.b4562751af4f6566b12a584407479bc4.jpg

Both courses are right on the Bass Straight (in the background) Although I think I prefer the rugged coastline of King Island. IMG_3766.JPG.cb553a402cbe81eb0e9b16df19eb394c.JPG

An interesting Par 3 - tee box in the foreground, green in the background.

My wife teeing off on one of the Par4's. As mentioned the Lost Farm course is 20 holes, which of course we walked. I think my phone logged 25,000 steps.  Note: some of the bunkers are so deep if you get in them they may never find you.

Price has gone up as we’ve decided to go with a charter flight from a local airport. AUD450 more, but 40 minute flight after a 30 minute drive and leaving when we want rather than getting up at 4am and driving 2 hours followed by 2 hours over 2 flights sounds like value to me. Might have to sell some more stuff out of my shed to cover the difference.

4 rounds, flights, accommodation and hire car for AUD1800 still amazing value with the quality of the courses. After shoulder surgery and 4 melanomas removed in less than 2 years, I feel like I deserve to splurge a bit.

Did you look into the ferry between Melbourne and King Island?

No ferries to King Island, only Melbourne to Devenport. When I go to Barnbougle I’ll probably take the ferry and combine it with a Tasmania holiday

I must be thinking the Devonport to King Island then, my SIL used to be the Ship's engineer on it. My daughter and SIL live just outside of Hobart. We've played some nice courses there.
