I like you goals but the sub 25 putts sounds really tough unless you miss every green. How does that tie into your playing better golf?

Yeah, fair.  I suppose I could meet that goal simply by having a really good day chipping and not actually putting all that well.

Really the goal is to putt better overall.  I don't have Arccos, but I may have access to a putting average via the Grint.  Bottom line is I'd like to putt better but maybe need a better metric.

Mine this year is to get my handicap from 24 to 18 and to possible break 90 for the first time.

Going to break my goals into achievable goals and stretch goals.

Achievable

  • Reduce handicap to under 20
  • Break 90 for the first time

Stretch

  • Decrease handicap to 17 or less
  • Break 90 consistently (not every time, but at least occasionally)

Based on your work ethic I am thinking your "stretch" goals might not be quite as lofty as you think.  Looking forward to hearing how your season goes.  Keep at it!

Pretty simple for me this year as 2020 setbacks caused my golf game to decline in dramatic fashion. I just want to make a few simple swing improvements and build some consistency again. I still hit the ball well and can shape shots, but my misses have gotten worse and poor course management often compounds the issue. First three rounds of 2020 were 104, 100, and 99.

Also, while I love my new putter, I am still very much adjusting. Over those same rounds, I went 42, 34, & 43 putts... My previous best with my old putter was either 26 or 27 putts and average was 31.

My goal was to get into the 3s for GHIN this year, and my recent 74 has me very close just before the year starts. That one score took me down a 1/2 a point! Crazy.

I may live to regret this (hope not) but with the season in Nebraska likely to begin in a matter of weeks, I've been inspired to try to identify some goals for the season.

"Big Rock" Goals

- Lower handicap from current 6 to 3 or better

- Break par for 18 holes

- Win my Saturday morning "league" championship.  (This is unlikely, at my handicap it would take a very low round...usually a 13ish handicap shoots an 80 or something like that and that's all she wrote.)

Sub Goals

- Drive the par 4 2nd hole at my home course.  It's 330 but a bit downhill, and if the tees and the wind are right it's possible for me...I've been hole high before but right.  Same goal for the 310 yard par 4 17th...it's a dogleg but requires a pretty high ball flight to carry a large tree.

- 25 putts or less in a round

I know the big rock goals are lofty, but I don't see the point in setting goals that aren't really aspirational.

Anyone else care to share?

Those are some good goals, very detailed too.  Mine are pretty simple, I just want to play more golf, hit more fairways, hit more greens, sink more putts and have more fun.

My goals are try to improve Driving accuracy and reduce putts

On the plus side I will be running with Arccos this year so that should help me dial in exactly where i need to focus on. On the flip side a baby due in June will likely decrease my practice time.

My current golf goal is to just hit a club. Hurt my wrist at work Dec 22 2020 and spent two months locked in a wrist brace sitting at home. Just went back to work on light duty 8 days ago.

General goals:

- get into better golf shape (improving flexibility and core strength, losing 5 to 10 pounds of bad weight).

- string together a complete round of sub bogey golf.  More often than not I can have 9 holes of +5 to +8. But I mentally and physically struggle consistently playing 18 holes.

I'd love to shoot between +3 and even for a round of 18 this year. That would really be a step in the right direction.

Another goal would be to have an eagle or 4 birdies in a round. Putter needs to be better.

My goal is to join a club for the first time and actually play more than 3 times a year. (I’m 54 and have been playing off and on since I was a teenager.  Not sure if I’ve ever played more than half a dozen rounds in any given year.)

I have no formal handicap, so getting that is a goal.

Finding a regular group of guys to play with. This should go hand in hand with joining a club.

Improve short game (I have no metrics to measure this yet, but it’s like the Supreme Court definition of pornography, I’ll know it when I see it)

Lots of great goals in these posts and like the rest of you I want to get better. Early last year I broke 90 for the first time and inconsistently card a high 80's round, this year I want to be consistently in the mid 80's. The question I ask myself is how am I going to accomplish this and other golfing goals. To that I need to understand what's holding me back. For instance one of them is to hit more GIR. Currently what I know is the avg. GIR  per round. What I don't know in reflection of playing a round is why did I miss the GIR on a particular hole. So the analytical side of my brain now commands a notebook so that I can log the misses. That info, I hope, will lead to a more specific practice plan.

Main goals:

-Get handicap to all time low, 5.4 currently best ever was 2.7 in 2018

-Better golf shape. Keep losing weight. Got up to 270 when baby came, down to 235-240 now. Goal is 200. Get back to yoga for flexibility.

-Focus. I can feel rushed out there. Everything needs to slow down. Playing without fear, stay within myself and 100% on every shot.

-Place in a tournament

Big goals:

-Scratch or better handicap

-Win a tournament

The few lessons I took this is something the pro helped me understand. The where you miss can be just as important for score as why you miss the green.

Hitting greens is a great goal. Look at proximity to the hole from various distances when making your notes. That applies to greens but as well.

So I will turn 65 this year which means that I move from towards the oldest in my age category of Senior 55-64 to the youngest.  That should make me competitive again in some stuff coming up this fall plus I get to move up a set of tees for those competitive events.  So goal number one is to play as close to weekly in my league and then to enter in the county and city championship that come up in October weeks after my 65th birthday, make the championship flight in both and the top 5 in the city championship.  That's where I was at when I was 55-57 before I had my heart issues and struggled with a variety of other health issues.

In order to accomplish those goals I will need to significantly improvement my trap play and proximity to the hole on shots under 150 - moving up a set of tees will mean far fewer shots longer than that on the courses that I will be playing regularly.  It goes without saying that I will have to play and practice more this summer towards those steps and goals.  That in and of itself will be great.

More GIR is great and will certainly get you into the mid-80's.  But for a frame of reference, last weekend I shot 80 on Saturday with a triple bogey and only hit 5 GIR. and on Sunday I shot 87 in the wind with 3 doubles and ZERO GIR.  The difference for me is "up and down" shots.  To quote Sergio: "Everyone likes a good up and down."

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

After playing yesterday, I want to add three more goals that i noticed impacted my game.

1. Work on getting more consistent off the tee. I had one perfect 270 yard drive, but I didn't pull our the driver otherwise yesterday cause I have no confidence or consistency with it.

2. Get better at adapting to the conditions. It was a very windy day yesterday. But while I remembered to take that into account sometimes, other times I completely forgot to.

3. Get a round in with my dad. We're in different states, but I just lost a loved one to covid over the weekend. So some way, somehow, I want to get a round in with my dad while I still have the opportunities available.

Rag tag bag, but it does the job.
