Best Amenity or "Extra Touch" at a course?

Tarheelvolvo

Saw a post recently about Michael Jordan's golf club and how even his ice cubes are branded!!
Ev18DheXIAA7umI.jpg

Anyway, it got me thinking about what special amenity or "extra touch" have you seen at a clubhouse that really surprised you?

I remember when I visited Kinloch for the first time and how I there was a personalized towel in the caddy's hand already and a nameplate (temporary, but still) on my locker next to the host I was playing with!

I hope at some point in my life I can name some, I've played at some nice clubs in the Cleveland area but none have anything special that sets them apart outside of the course details or amenities.

I’ve played at a few swanky clubs that mow boxes the same height as greens and cut a proper hole in the tee, so you can work on your stroke (or do some additional gambling) when the course is really backed up.

I was at one club where there was not a bag drop and they didn't want you to carry your clubs to the cart area. They told me to just stand behind your car. Then one of those larger golf carts with multiple seats met you at your car. And brought you and your clubs up to the cart area.

I was at Southern Hills and they had a doorman. That was his only job. Opened the door for you and welcomed you to the club and directed you where to go.

My club usually puts club monogrammed towels in your cart.

Another club I went to gave you a yardage book with your greens fee if you haven't been there before.

Also a couple had valet parking.

One thing that was a small touch, but very welcome.  At the conclusion of play, a players assistant handed you—with tongs-an ice cold face towel that was scented with some sort of orange scent.   On a 90 degree day, it was a special treat.

Best I can do is at my home course I'll come in the clubhouse after a round, go in and wash up and my drink is waiting for me by the time I get back without having to order anything.

Helps that my sister in law is the bartender though

Not sure if @jlukes agrees or not, but “comfort stations” are the BOMB! Everything available, free, that one can imagine snack/drink-wise! Salty, sweet, ice cream, etc! Then add cooked items to order at the turn that aren’t in the clubhouse! Having an actual cook and grill/flat top making various items as one drives by- could be tacos, hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, etc.

Lastly, when a club brings the food or drink out to you mid-round. That’s real service!

Ohhh, those too! SO good.

Here’s one: compressed air for removing mud/dirt from spikes, not those “brushes” we scrape our shoes through. There was a CC here that had the compressed air on a hose/nozzle and it does a MUCH better job cleaning shoes.

Name tag put on one’s bag to keep. Actually has the name of the golfer etched into it. Great touch! I didn’t even know they had put this on my bag. I was so exited when I saw it at the end of the round!

Those ice cubes are awesome!  I don't play too many high end, resort style courses but at Old Works (Nicklaus Signature Course in Anaconda, MT) they were packaging a resident special that included breakfast or lunch depending on your tee time.  It seems years ago (well, many years ago), many of the better courses offered bag tags.  I use to have several adorning my quiver.

Personally, the best amenity I have found, is a simple genuine greeting.

Played a municipal course in New Mexico where the entire staff, from the head pro and his assistant working the desk to the lady behind the lunch counter were friendly and helpful.

The way you set everything up for us was a great treat, made a great day even better!

I got to play a local Donald Ross designed CC through the local chapter, it was cool just to see the scorecard with my name printed on it, all official looking.

So I need to hang out more with @GolfSpy_THV.  My only invite to Kinloch came with too many strings, so I had to turn it down.

The coolest thing I can remember is the guided tour of the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse a buddy and I received after playing there (BTW - we played Dye's Valley; the Stadium Course was closed to prep for The Players).  Some pretty cool memorabilia and stories.

Forgot what course it was but there was one that gave out free apples which was awesome as a mid round snack. It always struck me as a nice touch.

I also loved courses that had free water bottles in a cooler when you're away from the clubhouse. I'll take that over anything in a hot climate.

TPC sawgrass gave out tags with the logo on them when you played there. I can't recall anything that has stood out other than the apples.

With Covid rules in effect our course had coolers with water bottles strategically placed around the course. I hope they continue that trend even after the pandemic subsides.

I’ve played a few bucket list courses but I don’t remember anything truly exceptional. Price correlates with how players are treated by and large, but I’ve been at some munis that bent over backwards for players and some upscale courses that were snooty. I care much more about course condition than signature ice cubes - though I readily admit that’s a novel touch worth noting!

We don't have coolers on the carts.  We used to have coolers with ice water on hole 5 tee, hole 8 tee, hole 13 tee, and hole 16 tee.  No drink cart anymore.  Gone due to COVID.  It was a struggle last year in 110º heat.  The golf course sold a lot more bottled water though.  We did get a free plastic bag filled with ice when we bought a 6 pack of beer.  I'd like to get the water coolers back this year; I always wetted my hat.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
