CCRyder
Lately I've been obsessing over how to fit myself for my putter of course I could pay $100 and go to a fitter down in Washington DC and use all the fancy equipment and figure this out. But between time and money I'm taking a stab at it myself. I want to get this thread started to document any and all of that work I am going to do to try and figure this out. I also want to welcome advice or comments from others that have tried to figure out the correct putter tight for their stroke correct length correct lie and so on. To get the ball rolling...bada bing ! I thought I'd post this ridiculous video I just made of myself in slow-mo using my harmonica holder that I use while playing guitar this is just a first shot at trying to document somehow my stroke path. Alas I can only post a picture of this. CCRyder
What is your strategy for figuring this out? Well here is what I am thinking...1. Capture static measurements ie knuckles to floor, angles of shaft to floor etc. using a buddy and V1 video. I have a giant protractor from carpentry stuff as well. 2. Try and capture 2-3 angles of slow mo video of my stroke. 3. Try and capture up close video of impact and also use impact tape together. 4. Demo the three putters I have laying around, blade, mid mallet, and mallet. If possible come up with a way to take some of this to Dick's for testing new putters. Alf. S
I did the PING Heppler review last year and it got me to re-evaluate my stroke an setup. The putter is adjustable from 34 to 36" and I noticed that my setup had me gripping low on the grip, I adjusted the grip down to 34" and couldn't use it I assume due to the swingweight changes. But after trying videos and focusing on swing thoughts I came to the conclusion that getting a repetitive setup and very little swing thoughts is the way to go for me. CCRyder
I also found that Maltby has good resources and the putting tune up may be just what I need. http://ralphmaltby.com/putter-tune-up-procedure-worksheet/Sent from my Pixel 4 using MyGolfSpy mobile app 00sportsman and Alf. Video won’t be that helpful to select a putter. To determine setup find the position that lets you see the line correctly from setup posting. I am going to be lazy and have you search YouTube for these videos. Search for “be better golf” and Mike Malaska. They did some videos where mike explains exactly what I am talking about. Once you know your setup the next step is putter. The key ideas for the putter is that you can start it on intended line and that you can control distance. You can do. 1 of 2 things when selecting a putter. You can pick a putter and figure out how to use it; basically adapt yourself to the putter. The second is you find a putter that meets your tendencies. Tendencies are the biases and results of the choices we make in the putting stroke. The way I was taught to select a putter was to roll the ball over a dime 16” in front of a ball using different stroke lengths. The putter that helps you do that consistently is the putter that fits your stroke. Yes you can nick the edge but you really want the ball to roll over the middle. You could also use gates (the Visio golf site has the distances and gate widths to check how much offline you would be; know this information ) or a narrow yardstick. Try different styles, weights, grips, offset, hosel types and positions, etc. notice I didn’t say toe hang; that is simply a byproduct of the above. Assuming you are right handed, If you miss right try a heavier putter or more offset. If you miss left try the less weight or more heel shafted. There will probably be multiple combinations that work so your next step is to figure out which one you can control distance with. This is where the video may help. Do a slo-mo of launch to see if the ball has any backspin off the face. You can look at “the putting engineer” on Instagram and he has some videos about this as well as some good drills to practice using everyday items. Good luck and let us know how you are doing in your search for the perfect putter. fozcycle, Kenny B, RickyBobby_PR and 3 others 6 Quote Driver: G400 Max 9* w/ KBS Tour Driven Fairway: TS3 15* w/Project X Hzardous Smoke Hybrids: 915H 21* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype 915H 24* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype Irons: TR20V 6-11 w/Vizard TR20-85 Graphite Wedge: 54/12D, 60/8M w/:Accra iWedge 90 Graphite Putter: Sacks Parente MC 3 Stripe Backup Putters: Milled Collection RSX 2, mFGP2, Futura 5W, TM-180 Member: MGS Hitsquad since 2017
GolfSpy AFG
I don't take issue with anything you're attempting to do, but I would offer that the $100 you are attempting to save might be worth it. Determining your tendencies, to include where you strike the ball on the putter face and the degree open or closed the putter face might be, are pretty important pieces of information that I would think you're going to have a hard time gleaning from your videos. Again, not trying to pour cold water on your do-it-yourself approach here, but given the potential cost of the putter, and the fact that if done right your putter can have a place in your bag for a very long time, this might not be an area to go cheap. Just food for thoughts. Good luck either way. 00sportsman and RickyBobby_PR 2 Quote Driver: TSR2, Ventus Blue 6 S, 65g Stiff FW: TSR2 3w, 15, Ventus Blue 7 S, 70g Stiff Hybrids: Apex Pro 3H, Ventus Blue 8 S, 80g Stiff Stealth DHY 4H, Ventus Blue 8 S, 80g Stiff Irons: SMS 5-6, SMS Pro 7-PW, Aerotech Steelfiber i95 Stiff Wedges: SM9 48 F Grind, 52 F Grind, 56 M Grind, Aerotech Steelfiber i95 Stiff Putter: Sri-Hot 5K Triple Wide, Stroke Lab shaft Ball: Pro V1 Click here for my HONMA TR20 Official Review! CCRyder
So I wanted to follow up and share I took into account the advice above and headed over to 2nd Swing for a putter fitting. I ended up having about the right length putter for was needing g to be fit for at least a slight arc. I was fit into a slightly used Ping Tyne 4. It sports the adjustable shaft if I change my set up. Overall pleased with the experience it was free with purchase and or $75. Thanks again for the feedback all.
