Popular Post Nunfa0
As some of you may know, last May I had a total hip replacement. Since then I have noticed that my golf swing has changed for the better and my irons no longer suit me. The F9s I have from the CCC3 are set at 2* upright and have lightweight XP95 regular shafts in them. This combo no longer really works for me and I know from a mini fitting that I need stiff shafts again, my bionic, titanium and ceramic have given me my speed back . The last few weeks I have been playing with a set of 2016 Cobra Forged Tec irons that are standard but the shafts don't really feel good to me but I can make them spin and stop. They feel great when I middle them but off the shelf is not quite right. It's time for me to get properly fitted again. My plan is to try as many brands as I can to find my perfect set, everything from Titlest, Cobra, Wilson, Callaway, TaylorMade, Srixon and anything else that they can find. I am hoping for forged but cast that suits will be fine. I will try to document my journey but I may get too wrapped up in hitting beautiful metal to take photos sirchunksalot, GolfSpy BOS, cnosil and 11 others 11 3 Quote In my cart Bag: Driver: King F9 9° - LH - Atmos Blue TS 6 Stiff Woods: King F9 - LH - 3/4 Wood - Atmos Blue 7 Reg Z U85 2 Iron Irons: T200 4 Iron AMT White S300 T100S - LH - 3-48* - AMT White S300 Wedges: Indi FLX- LH - 52° 56° 60° - True Temper Spinner Wedge shafts Putter: 2 Bar Hybrid Ball: Pro V1x Testing: Haywood CB/MB Combo Iron Set, 4-7 Cavity backs, 8-PW Muscle Backs, True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 Stiff, 2 Degrees stronger lofts. GolfSpy BOS
That's wonderful news on the hip @Nunfa0, just make sure its on the USGA conforming list since! The first thing I would want to swing is the Srixon ZX7 and 5s. They look nice and everyone seems to love them. Not sure if you're thinking player's distance, hollow, or any preferences you have, but I still love the current Forged Tecs too! Enjoy the ride, looking forward to hearing about your fitting! Nunfa0
So today I went a bit the first group of candidates for my new set. I started by telling the fitter what I needed ie feel, consistency and good spin. He got me to hit a group with my 7 iron, Cobra 2016 Forged Tec, to warm up and get base numbers. He came to the conclusion that players cavity irons were the way to go and I was happy to agree. We also realised that I now need to go back to stiff shafts. The first club he got me to hit was the Callaway Apex. It was by far the longest but the spin was down. The feel was good but a bit "clicky". Next was the Ping i210. This was a resounding no, it looked ok but we just didn't see eye to i (sorry couldn't resist). Then we hit the Titleist T200. It went well with good dispersion, spin and ok feel. Next it was the turn of the Wilson CB. This was the shortest iron but it also has the highest loft at 34*. The spin was great and dispersion was really nice. The feel was phenomenal!! My first comment on hitting it was " Holy S###". It felt butter soft compared to the others and I could have hit it all day . Also, to my eye, this is easily the best looking club I hit today. To finish up I asked to hit the Mizuno Hot Metal irons. I had a set of JPX 900s and loved them but the new one was terrible . I hit it all over the planet so we said goodbye to it. After all of this he looked at the GC quad numbers and picked out the Titleist T200 and the Wilson CB as the final pair. He got me to hit both again with Pro Vs instead of range balls, so we could get "real" numbers. He was concerned the CBs could balloon into wind. The Titleist went first and again was good but the feel was not quite there. Also the blade was just a little too long for my eye. Then the Wilson CBs just blew the Titleists away. The looks and feel were just way too good and the dispersion was fantastic. The spin was right where I like it, between 7000 and 8000 revs combined with a 47* descent angle for drop and stop. So far I have been fitted to a set of Wilson CBs, standard lie and lofts with KBS $taper stiff shafts. I have a booking on Friday to hit the Srixon Z5 and Z7s but they will have to do something amazing to beat out the Wilsons... Bubbly Pop
Having tried out the multiple offerings available this winter, as my iron game has always been the bane of my existence, I found there currently are a number of great sticks out there. Nunfa0
Right, here is part two and the final decision. Last Friday I went along to The Golf Warehouse here in Christchurch to hit the Srixon irons. I was lucky enough to be able to work with Ritchie Bath, the head fitter. Ritchie is passionate about golf and loves to think outside the square. He had me hitting heavy shafts with game improvement heads, light shafts with players heads and so on. I tried Callaway Apex again with light, stiff graphite and they felt great but spin was down as was dispersion. I tried ZX7 with light weight steel and they were really nice but definitely firmer than the Wilson CBs. The clubs that surprised me were the ZX4 players distance irons. They felt great and flew high and straight. The decent angle was up but spin was down. Still I was starting to think I could game these when a nasty little flyer reared it's head. I was hitting wedge 131 yards over and over, when I made a swing that felt no different and it went 142 yards. I couldn't blame anything for it so it had to be the club. This is the sort of thing that I want to avoid, if I make a bad swing and end up short then its my fault but a sudden hot shot from the face is a score killer. I walked out of the store after an hour or so knowing exactly what I was going to do. I went and had another hit with the Wilsons and ordered them straight away. There is just something about those clubs that really clicks with me and they feel so damn good!! Oh and while I was back at Riccarton Park I had a hit with the Mizuno 921 SELs. They are pretty but scary with not much offset. They feel great out of the centre but not so good out of the hosel So I am getting Wilson Staff CB irons, 4-pw, KBS $taper stiff (100 gms), standard loft and lie with mid size grips. When I get them I will post lots of gratuitous club pictures GolfSpy BOS, StrokerAce, MattF and 5 others 7 1 Quote In my cart Bag: Driver: King F9 9° - LH - Atmos Blue TS 6 Stiff Woods: King F9 - LH - 3/4 Wood - Atmos Blue 7 Reg Z U85 2 Iron Irons: T200 4 Iron AMT White S300 T100S - LH - 3-48* - AMT White S300 Wedges: Indi FLX- LH - 52° 56° 60° - True Temper Spinner Wedge shafts Putter: 2 Bar Hybrid Ball: Pro V1x Testing: Haywood CB/MB Combo Iron Set, 4-7 Cavity backs, 8-PW Muscle Backs, True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 Stiff, 2 Degrees stronger lofts. When I get them I will post lots of gratuitous club pictures This is going to be as exciting as an official review. Nunfa0
Yesterday I went to ask if there were any updates for the irons. The reply was do you want the bad news or the "BAD" news Turns out that the irons are still on back order and the next shipment is due in October so after assembly I might get them by the end of December. The Pro was not confident at all that I would even get them then . I'm willing to wait a couple of months but 9 months or more is too much. Looks like Wilson have let me down bigtime and that its time to go back to the drawing board. Hopefully the new Ping irons are released soon and you can give them a run to see if they have a better performance then the i210's. I wonder if there are going to be any other new releases that could be good options and maybe after all of this a possibly better iron for you will come... regardless still sorry and looking forward to updates as they come. Nunfa0
Thanks mate, I took a trial set of Titleist T100s out the other day and played 9 with them. I hit them really well and they felt amazing, so they could be an option. The problem I have is being at the bottom of the world we are the last stop on the supply chain. Also we are just a tiny blip in the numbers for all of the companies so if anyone has to wait it's poor little NZ. Thats what has happened with the Wilson clubs. All of the product is shipped to Australia for distribution between them and NZ. The Aussies decided that they needed all of the lefty CB heads so I miss out. M. Nunfa0
After a day of sulking I decided to take this as an opportunity to try some of the losing candidates again. It just so happened that the pro shop at my club had some Titleist trial sets come in. The only lefty set he had were T100 with AMT white s300 shafts in them. I had tried the T100 irons briefly before and didn't think I had the game for them but I thought "whats the worst that can happen?" Well the first swing felt good and went straight, so maybe beginners luck? The next few shots followed the same pattern, including a three iron off the tee so I started to get creative. A few draws, fades, low shots and high shots later and I had shot 2 over par for nine. I thought that went well but there is no way I can do it again, so a couple of days later I walked on to the 1st expecting nothing. Well....I shot two over again!! It had to be too good to be true so I played the back nine yesterday and.....bogeyed the last to shoot one over par !! I immediately took the clubs to the pro and gave them back saying "Take these back or you will never see them again" The combination of those heads with those shafts just works for me . There is a Titleist fitting day next Friday and I am booked for 1pm, dont be surprised if I have my new Irons ordered about 30 minutes after that...... sirchunksalot, GolfSpy_APH, GolfSpy_SHARK and 2 others 1 4 Quote In my cart Bag: Driver: King F9 9° - LH - Atmos Blue TS 6 Stiff Woods: King F9 - LH - 3/4 Wood - Atmos Blue 7 Reg Z U85 2 Iron Irons: T200 4 Iron AMT White S300 T100S - LH - 3-48* - AMT White S300 Wedges: Indi FLX- LH - 52° 56° 60° - True Temper Spinner Wedge shafts Putter: 2 Bar Hybrid Ball: Pro V1x Testing: Haywood CB/MB Combo Iron Set, 4-7 Cavity backs, 8-PW Muscle Backs, True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 Stiff, 2 Degrees stronger lofts. I'm glad that there is another iron that seems to hit the jackpot for you. I'll be eagerly awaiting how the fitting goes and to see if you end up taking the plunge. I really have next to no experience with Titleist irons, they were never readily available and quite often others were cheaper and more accessible. However with all that being said knowing your game you have more more interested in how these work and maybe I'll have to find a demo day close to me?
