Just checking in to reiterate a point. While I have not gotten any launch monitor numbers to prove this, I am longer with the AutoFlex without feeling like I'm swinging any harder. Based on my Mevo numbers at the range, my swing speed has actually come down a little bit since winter, and I might top out at 110-111 MPH now.

I had a lesson yesterday and hit the driver pretty well this morning feeling nothing more than "nice, easy swings" and making sure I turned enough in my backswing. Results were:

  • No. 3: 263 yards, slight fade, finished just barely in the right rough. Allowed me to go for the green in two.
  • No. 5: 260 yards, pulled left going up the hill and hit a tree. Had to punch out.
  • No. 7: 265 yards, pretty big fade that was blocked out by trees. Probably over compensated for hitting it left on No. 5. Had to hit a low runner up the fairway.
  • No. 9: 241 yards, pulled left, hit grove of trees and ricocheted backwards. Was not a good swing, but got lucky and could hit over the trees up toward the green.
  • No. 14: 280 yards, just right of fairway. Beautiful swing, longest drive I've ever hit on this hole. Led to a perfect layup on the par 5.
  • No. 15: 261 yards, majorly uphill short par 4, kind of bunted driver that I overdrew. Was hole high though.
  • No. 16: 284 yards, downhill. Didn't actually hit the ball all that squarely, but this was a great example of the forgiveness of the AutoFlex. Just barely in the left rough.
  • No. 17: 315 yards, downhill. I hit the sweet spot and unfortunately was aimed just a bit right for the shot shape (slight fade). I ended up blocked out by a line of trees, but I absolutely killed this one.
  • No. 18: 283 yards, uphill. Again, not my best swing as it was a bit heely and pulled left.

As you can see, the driver was pretty good to me coming down the stretch. Nos. 16, 17, and 18 are also the most "open" holes (if my home course has such a thing), so I find it's a bit easier to swing away.

I don't think I'll be selling the stock Rogue White anytime soon, but I am also not seeing a reason to switch back, either. I'm finding the AutoFlex to be very forgiving and the perceived distance gains are crazy.

this is great .. they also do iron shafts any consideration to try them .. I know they are costly but you think have autoflex iron shafts would also be an upgrade ?

That would be quite the costly reshaft! I haven't seen anyone with the iron shafts. I wonder if they'd feel like a Lag Shot-type training aid?

Full disclosure, the Aldila Rogue White 130 MSI is back on the Mavrik for now.

Since my last lesson I've been very hit or miss with the AutoFlex. I've realized the AutoFlex produces a fade with my natural swing. When I'm swinging well, it's a nice cut/power fade. But if I'm off just a little bit, it turns into a high, weak shot, or worse, a slice off the planet. I really struggled over my last couple of rounds with those shots and felt like I was losing a lot of potential distance as my spin numbers ticked up. And, whenever I'd "go after one," I'd hit a duck hook.

I popped the Rogue White back in for a range session this evening and had a much better experience. Without trying, I started to hit nice straight shots and small draws. Most importantly, when I "went after it," I didn't hit the ball hard left.

454020158_Screenshot_20210617-191255_FSGolf.jpg.9b536eae5891bc5824eb11746d86de62.jpg

I did lose two to the right a bit, but everything is within 50 yards.

My scores tend to be bad when I get in trouble off the tee. At this point, I feel like the Rogue is worth trying out.

Did you try lowering the headweight? The Callaway adapter is heavy.

I could put the lighter 2 gram weight back in the head. Earlier this spring that was less effective than the stock 5 gram weight. Probably would be worth a shot.

What's the headweight with the 2 gram vs. the current setup?

Stock weight headweight is 192. With the two gram weight it drops to 189. Could get to 187 by removing the weight.

I'm not done experimenting just yet, but am going to give the Rogue White a few rounds. I have a pretty good baseline of what the AutoFlex is giving me right now - about 250-260 on OK strikes but a little bit of an uncontrolled fade.

Cool. The Callaway OEM adapters are pretty heavy, so usually if the head without adapter is 192, the head plus adapter comes in at like 202 or 203 or so.

My opinion is you would see these on the Champions Tour or LPGA (relative to PGA or KFT with longer hitters) if there was a noticeable gain in distance without offsetting accuracy. Players at that level should have the best chance of handling the shaft given their skill levels as well as benefitting more from added distance. Adam Scott was hitting it all over the park when he tried it. It could be the softer flex smooths tempo when beginning to use it and as you adjust, you revert back to your previous swing and the misses are amplified.

Yeah, there is still something to the AutoFlex that I can't put my finger on. When I do center one up the ball flies. I'm not ready to give up on it, and I may switch back to it within a few rounds. Who knows...

Part of what I said earlier in this thread is trying to figure out if it's worth my money to hang onto it. A few weeks ago I felt like it was giving me something the Rogue White wasn't. Now, I'm not so sure I feel the same way.

We'll see how my next 3-5 rounds go.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think today was my 2nd round with the Autoflex (maybe 3rd, can't remember) and i finally figured it out. One of the guys that i play from time to time was like, "didn't know you had a draw" (i normally don't). Pretty much all of drives were straight or a baby draw. I really never hit a draw normally, my normal stock drive usually has a little bit of fade on it. I think that shaft works well for me because i have a smooth transition.

Good to hear it's working out for you. The AF is still on the bench for me, and I'm contemplating selling it. The Rogue White is doing well at the moment, though I've considered going back to the AF just to see what happens for a few round again. During this morning's round I had drives 275, 289 and 296 with the Rogue White so it is making a strong case to stay in the bag.

Not quite ready to give up on the AutoFlex yet. I have an Epic Max LS 9 degree head on its way after snagging a decent deal on lightly used one. The lower launch and spin characteristics of the Epic Max LS might be a better fit than the standard Mavrik.

I'm eager to give the AF a try again as I've (fingers crossed) seemingly resolved the high right driver, for now at least. I'm feeling like I was swinging earlier in the year when I had really good results out of the gate with the AF.

I will say, the left going left hooks that occasionally cropped up with the AF have pretty much disappeared with the Rogue White.

What head weight are you using?

Think it is at 201 right now including the weight of the shaft adapter. Have a 5 gram weight as well that can get it down to 196. But like it at 201 so far.

Got the Epic Max LS/AutoFlex combo out on the range today. The Max LS came with the 12 gram weight installed, and with the length of the AutoFlex the swing weight came out around D4. That is more than recommended, but today's results were promising.

IMG_10072021_185322_(800_x_600_pixel).jpg.ac120646103523317c374bbf3d02b573.jpg

Impact dispersion was pretty good across 40 or so shots.

My left-to-right fade ball flight returned immediately upon switching to the AutoFlex. I'm not sure if it's the additional length over the Rogue White, but I consistently see more fade movement with the AutoFlex with both the Mavrik and Max LS heads.

I had my Mevo+ running for about 25 shots and got some interesting results. As expected, club speed shot up, ball speed didn't move a ton, but carry distance was much longer than with the Rogue White. Average spin came down a lot, and I still was hitting the ball very, very high. I trust my Mevo+ quite a bit, but I'll be curious to see if these numbers hold up on course (and if I can keep the ball in play with this shot shape).

Just to let everyone know who has been struggling with the Autoflex/Maverick combo; I tried it with the 10,5,2 and nothing weights looking to get it on or near the D0 swing weight. I couldn't control it. Left, right. I got discouraged after a few weeks and went back to my G425 with the Graffaloy Pro Launch Blue.

I decided to give the Autoflex a try with my Ping G25 head. It was supposed to be too heavy according to posts on here, which is why I went and got a Maverick head for the shaft initially.  I am so glad I did.

The G425 Max head with a stock weight is perfect for me. I am striping it straight and long. I gained the "as advertised" 25 yards. I can feel the head better than before and that has made all the difference. Love it.

Try the Ping head if you can. It very well may be the Maverick head is too light as was my case.

Sorry for the late reply. I am using the SF405.  The head weight in my case is helpful. I took 1 inch off the butt. Just love this thing. Hit all 7 fairways on the front nine yesterday. As a senior I cant hit it far, but the difference between 220 of the tee to 250+ with the Autoflex answered one question for me: Am I willing to pay for extra yards? YES! Apparently I am!

I'image.png.81839a61e13164ee5b21f96949c503a8.pngve gotten out for a handful of rounds now with the Max LS/AF 505X combo at D4 and am enjoying the results.

I decided to embrace the left-to-right ball flight and have started to have the confidence to aim down the left side of the fairway and let the ball fall back to the right. I know I'm giving up some distance potential by playing the fade, but my dispersion has improved a lot. More importantly I'm not double-crossing myself like I was earlier in the season when I was trying to hit draws with the Mavrik.

I have the Max LS set to -1/D and the sliding weight in full draw position.

As the Arccos data shows, my driver has been behaving relatively well recently in comparison to my 5 HCP baseline.

Distance-wise, I am content. I still seem to have a shot or two a round that just rocket further than expected, but I know a decent strike with a comfortable swing can net me 260-270 total now. On the course I play most often that is more than enough to go driver-wedge into almost every hole.

Thanks to @dlow206/Bort Golf I have a new 7 gram weight to try out in the Max LS/AutoFlex combo. Using this weight brings the swingweight of the driver down to D2 from D4+.

I will be curious to see how this effects my ball flight and ball striking.

Hot and sticky range session this afternoon, but got some good data from the lighter swing weight setup. Initial impressions are mixed.

Average swing speed shot up slightly, maybe 1-3 MPH depending on swing. I had a lot of effortless 111+ swings according to the Mevo+ today, normally those types of swings would yield 109 or even a bit slower. Ball speeds seemed to rise slightly, too. So that's good.

Dispersion was OK. I think the lighter swingweight helped to keep my fades on poorer swings under control. It also led to a few draws. Altogether over about 35 shots I saw a shot pattern that was 60 yards wide at about 250 yards carry:

image.png.e27c6d61b5452357ff19ea386a777966.png

Impact position moved out and a little higher on the face. It took me a while to adjust to that.

I wish the cone could be a little narrower, but my expectations are too high. My issue is that at 250 yards on my home course, there are only a few holes where the shot cone doesn't line up perfectly with trees. For example, on No. 16:

image.png.63f23db2e452813e9dd0c78f4b2103bf.png

In fact, only one of the 10 holes where I might hit driver have a landing area large enough to accommodate a 60-yard cone without having having an obstructed second shot somewhere within the area. This is more of a gripe about my course's lack of tree removal than anything else... 🤣

Impact position moved out and a little higher on the face. It took me a while to adjust to that.

I wish the cone could be a little narrower, but my expectations are too high. My issue is that at 250 yards on my home course, there are only a few holes where the shot cone doesn't line up perfectly with trees. For example, on No. 16:

In fact, only one of the 10 holes where I might hit driver have a landing area large enough to accommodate a 60-yard cone without having having an obstructed second shot somewhere within the area. This is more of a gripe about my course's lack of tree removal than anything else... 🤣

Good feedback. Shouldn't a 110 mph swing speed be yielding 300 total  yrds pretty easily though? What are your spin #'s and launch angle?

I've been told...Don't let the trees bother you, they are 90% air!

Usually after my ball hits one and bounces backward I can tell them the 10% is what always gets me.

Few things to keep in mind as I'm reporting numbers:

  1. These sessions are with varying qualities range balls. I've noticed some major outliers with spin numbers on certain shots. Additionally, I would expect ball speed to be slower than a premium ball. Launch angles also seem to be higher.
  2. Mevo+ likely over reports club head speed compared to Trackman. Combined with the range balls, even centered strikes rarely exceed 1.45 smash factor.
  3. On course, I'm certainly more tentative. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm swinging 104-106 on most of my swings. My home course also has bluegrass fairways that they cannot mow that close (sometimes playing as high as .75" to 1"), so combined with morning wetness I don't get a lot of roll unless I hit a dry spot.

Assuming a good total drive is 2.5-2.7 times the club head speed, I would expect to be between 270-300 total on my best shots. My best drives from the past 5 rounds, total yardage:

  • 279 yards
  • 280 yards
  • 286 yards
  • 289 yards
  • 284 yards

Combined across all of my rounds this year, my Arccos Smart Range is 253-284 yards.

As far as today's session averages:

  • 252.3 yards carry (5.9 deviation)
  • 111.1 MPH club speed (2.1 deviation)
  • 156.5 MPH ball speed (3.1 deviation)
  • 13.7 degree launch angle (1.7 deviation)
  • 2,896 RPM spin (791 deviation - here's the inconsistency I spoke of)
  • 1.41 smash (.02 deviation)
  • 0.0 Angle of Attack (Bounced between -1 and 1)

Plugging those averages into the Flightscope Trajectory Optimizer yields 255 carry. So, it's not off by a ton.

With all of that being said, I really should make an effort to get the Mevo+ out on the course with real balls. I may try to do that this week, even if only for one or two shots.

Makes sense. I think I saw somewhere that range balls are about 10-15% shorter. The spin is your biggest wildcard. Those devices can be wildly inaccurate. You should try and test on a trackman or GC quad with your own balls to really see what your spin #'s are.
