Unofficial Review: Dumina AutoFlex SF505X Driver Shaft

Lightening up the swing weight with the 7 gram weight has made the the Max LS/AutoFlex combo even better.

I've gotten out for two rounds and a scramble since swapping out the weight, and I'm really happy with the results. As I saw during my range session, the lighter weight really seems to help keep my fades under control. And still, I have not hit a hook since putting the Max LS onto the AutoFlex. Anything that goes left is going left straight and just a bit off target.

I'm not getting additional distance with the lighter weight, but the dispersion is better and the spin does seem to have dropped ever so slightly. On a smooth and controlled swing I'm able to to total around 255-265 yards on wet fairways.

I played in the afternoon Wednesday for my scramble on a tighter mown and dry course. I hit a few monsters easily out to 285+ total with roll.

At this point, I'm ready to sell my Mavrik head and commit to this Max LS/AF combo for good.

Nice! What a difference a few positive rounds can make and verify the results that you see on the range.  It's a great feeling when you are excited to get to the tee box to hit those Bombs and Hellacious Seeds. lol

Unofficial Review: Dumina AutoFlex SF505X Driver Shaft

Long, cold winters without playing golf are dangerous for the wallet.

I try to be a frugal golfer. I built my last two irons sets to save some cash, play at an affordable, municipal-style course and balk at spending $60/hour for simulator practice in the offseason. But, after seeing launch monitor numbers on YouTube and tour validation with Adam Scott, the mystique of Dumina’s AutoFlex became too hard to pass up.

I am not a particularly great driver of the golf ball. I struggled with an inside takeaway and a steep, over-the-top wipe at the golf ball for most of my golfing life. As you can imagine, I did not have good results with the big stick.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have tested two drivers for the MyGolfSpy Forums now. Both times I fit into a stout, low-launch/low-spin shaft to offset my delivery. After working with my coach for the past 18 months, I’ve made some good progress with my driver swing. This winter, I switched to a nine degree Callaway Mavrik head with an x-stiff Aldila Rogue White 60 shaft. I gained a bit of launch without adding spin with this combination. I am hitting the driver better and further than ever before based on my FlightScope Mevo numbers.

My Mevo numbers at the heated winter range have stayed between 110-117 MPH club speed and 158-165 MPH ball speed. I had the opportunity to hit range balls outdoors once last week when we had weather in the low 40s. After 15 shots my averages looked like the following:

Ball Speed

Club Speed

Smash

Carry

Launch

Spin

Height (ft)

Time

160.2

109.2

1.47

260

12.5

2,640

108

6.9

On course, I am too tentative and usually do not reach the same level of speed as I do on the range. That said, I had a handful of nice drives during my first round of the season this past weekend:

drivers.jpg.a9fba5e3fee546f7d9b6b45ddb137c3a.jpg

My goal with the driver is to keep the ball in play and not cost myself penalty strokes. I am still working on the confidence to swing faster knowing I've improved.

My apprehension to swinging faster (which is definitely a mental issue) is one of the factors driving me to try the AutoFlex. The shaft could be a game changer if I can get a few more MPH club head speed without feeling like I’m swinging harder/faster.

Fitting and Ordering Process

Limited information is available online about what a “proper fit” is with the AutoFlex. As many of the TXG YouTube videos have highlighted, there are specific headweight and swingweight considerations to account for when determining playing length, head choice, etc.

A lengthy thread over at GolfWRX is devoted to the AutoFlex, but I found the best information in a Facebook group dedicated to players/users of the shaft. There, I found some “real world” advice from people who had tried and failed/succeeded in using the AutoFlex. For my build, I was targeting a 45.75” finished length and a swingweight between D1 and D2. These specifications are recommended by the manufacturer and also the members of the group.

autoflex_chart.png.6b38e36ba34b6243bc4e111015b00010.png

Before placing my order, I made a post on the group and received helpful confirmation of my plans from a knowledgeable member. Although not required, I did order the shaft from one of the professional fitters in the group. His price was the best I found. The shaft came cut to my specifications with a Callaway adapter installed within three days. I installed a Lamkin Sonar Tour grip to match my other clubs once I received the shaft.

I am not aware of an AutoFlex available to try locally.

My Setup

I replaced the stock five gram Mavrik weight with an aftermarket weight weighing two grams. Many people have chosen to go with a heavier grip to “trick” the swingweight scale. However, it seemed like the most successful players had opted for lighter head weights instead.

Rogue White 60X

Length

45.25” (45.5” to very end of grip)

Headweight

192 grams

Swingweight

D2.5

AutoFlex SF505X

Length

45.75” (46” to very end of grip)

Headweight

189 grams

Swingweight

D1.5

The Facebook commenter mentioned I may need to loft down the Mavrik head to eight degrees. I currently play at the stock loft.

First Impressions

From a looks standpoint, the AutoFlex is gorgeous. Yes, the hot pink may not be for everyone. I love that it stands out in the bag. The “black” color is not flat black, it is more of a pearly green-black at close inspection. Very sharp!

IMG_15032021_154349_(1280_x_960_pixel).jpg.0af5a032c4478815e9bf29036d7e6773.jpg

I know of no other shaft that arrives in its own protective sheath. A nice touch.

IMG_15032021_154438_(1280_x_960_pixel).jpg.0ea068880f53f713fb0808fdd56bfd2b.jpg

The feels from the initial waggle were as advertised. Imagine taking a club head and attaching it to a fishing pole. There is plenty of waggle/movement from the head. But it does not feel that way when swinging. It will be intriguing to hit a ball and see how it feels at impact.

I completed an initial test by taking three swings without a ball each with the Rogue White and AutoFlex. After quickly warming up, I measured my club speed with my Sports Sensors radar.

  • My three swings with the Rogue White recorded at 110 MPH, 111 MPH and 113 MPH.
  • My three swings with the AutoFlex recorded at 115 MPH, 114 MPH and 116 MPH.

Keep in mind the AutoFlex plays 1/2” longer than the Rogue White. I’m not willing to chalk up the speed gains in this brief test to anything more than length (yet).

I expect my driving range to open for the season sometime in the next two weeks. I will be able to gather more data and feedback at that time.

IMG_15032021_154423_(1280_x_960_pixel).jpg.6d767d9f5003a152fc324c3d6e6898a1.jpg

Is a driver shaft worth $800?

Probably not, although I’m keeping an open mind.

I would be ecstatic if the AutoFlex magically added 3-5 MPH club speed and the 4-7 MPH ball speed that should accompany. On a well-struck shot, that would be a quantifiable distance gain. However, I’m starting without any high expectations.

Part of what I enjoy about golf is trying out new equipment, so much so that my constant swaps are most likely detrimental to my scores. I’m not usually one to usually experience FOMO, but in this case I got wrapped up in the allure of this mysterious shaft.

And, at the end of the day, I still expect resale to be reasonable. Always need to have a backup plan. 😁

Fantastic review. I am very interested to see how it pans out for you. I read about AutoFlex and the Adam Scott experiment in Golf Digest, and I was intrigued. Then it mentioned the price. Yikes. Then I was reading about the secretive technology, and the mystery that is fitting to one. Just one of those three would scare me off a purchase. Bravo to you sir.

Go Blue! Hail to the victors!

Hahah I must have sunburn my brain at the beach today. I was reading your original post, not paying attention to the date, or the fact that you mention winter, all the while thinking “can’t wait to see how it works out for him.” Post a reply, and then it takes me to the bottom of the comments, and it hits me. Ugh. Sundays am I right?! It was nice to catch up to the saga all at once though! I am glad to see you found the combo that works for you! I have been golfing my whole life, but only started taking it seriously in 2021, and a lot of what you mentioned is stuff I have little to no knowledge of. You have given me some key points to consider when it comes to my setup. Thank you for all the follow up, detailed information, and well spoken posts. I am happy for you!

Over the weekend I was able to get my Mevo+ running on the course with the AF/Max LS combo. Up until this point I had only been hitting range balls. So, after getting stuck behind three groups on No. 10 Sunday morning, I decided to cut over to No. 17 and hit a handful of premium balls to gather some real numbers.

My swing was not great Sunday, but seeing Mevo+ numbers was a little disappointing. I had assumed I'd see better ball speeds and therefore smash with the premium balls, but I didn't get as big of jump as I was hoping for.

The second shot above was a draw that ended up in the left rough even with the 100 yard stake. Conservatively, that shot was 275 yards total based on my Google Earth charting. I should have had a GPS running, but didn't think that far ahead. Oh well.

Impressive data presentation by the Mevo +.....

And impressive shots by you as well!  👍  Nice club speed and flight pattern on that first one, spin a little up was that a slightly south of center impact?

These days I am partial to the power fade ball flight like your third one.  I am surprised the carry was at 250 with that spin number compared to the other two.  Looks like the flight height carried it!

I'd be chasing numbers to combine the best of the each.....the 15* launch & 120' or so height, the 110 club speed and the 2400 spin...... just to see what the max carry could be!  And 15 minutes later I'd be sweating like a pig and only get 2 out of 3 on each swing, getting more and more tired with the same basic carry distance!   😅  I know because I did this a couple weeks ago with the mevo after the 9 hole league....SWMBO was waiting in the parking lot after leaving and picking up the pizza so fortunately i had to cut it short before injuring myself!!

Really enjoyed the read - I followed at first but dropped off because there's no way I'm buying an $800 shaft for my driver. And then I played with two guys who have this shaft in their drivers yesterday.  And of course one of them had to have a SIM 2 and both were gracious and generous so guess who hit several drives with it on the back nine.  While we have the same 10.5 head I have mine opened a bit, so the loft is lower while his is cranked up a few which means the face is closed.

I launched them very high, a bit right of target, effortless and I had no trouble finding the center of the clubface.  I didn't have any sort of measuring device and didn't do what I should have which is hit my driver on the same hole as I hit that driver but I did seem to be longer in regards to where I was at with my playing partners with the auto flex shafted driver than my own. I wish that I could hit it sometime with the proper head setting.

For someone who can afford it this shaft seems to me to be worth a try.

We are gaming the same setup. I haven't played around with the weights lately, have a 9 gram in there at the moment. With this Max LS/AF combo, almost never have a big right miss. Instead of a push slice, my big miss is now a hook. But generally if I am putting any sort of decent swing on the ball, this combo is working out really well.

  • 1 month later...

Realized I hadn't checked back into this thread since getting a lesson where we focused on driver for a bit. I've been hitting the driver a lot better recently and the AF/Epic Max LS combo has been holding up really, really well. I've hit more 300+ drives in the past few weeks than I have in the past couple of years combined. Couple of good ones from today:

My Arccos "Smart Distance" has increased to 293 yards over my last 10 rounds. Absolutely incredible.

I don't think I'll be tempted to try anything else for quite a while.

Insane ! What do you think the shelf life is for the shaft ?

I've wondered that. I've read a few anecdotal reports of them cracking. I've been careful with it and so far so good. Does feel a little fragile though.

Yup. I have the seven gram weight I bought from you in there. It's perfect.

I put the 5 gram weight in the max ls today and switched to a jumbo max xs grip (i don’t have big hands but i’ve converted to a one plane swing). This combo is so good. I hardly ever miss big right anymore. Still an ocassional ball misses right, but not OB.

One other thing to note, the autoflex is typically talked about in context of increased distance, but it has also improved my accuracy as well. Been having more of those tee shots where i’m picking up the tee with the ball still in the air.

The accuracy thing is so true. If I put a good swing on a ball, it's almost like throwing a dart out onto the fairway.

I still have a nasty habit of opening the face a bit too much on the way back and can hit wipey push slices. But that's a swing thing and not the shaft.

I had three more drives over 300 today, including driving the green for the first time ever on a slightly uphill par 4 listed at 306 on the card.

  • 3 weeks later...

Mark me down as a full believer here. Larry D was kind enough to let me pair his SF 505 with my SIM 2 max head as a loaner for a couple of weeks.

I’ve been good with that driver with the Ventus blue in it. Now it explodes off the face - higher launch, longer carry but very flat landing. The ball stays in the air forever and it’s very easy to hit. Normal flight is an explosive baby draw.

I found a used one online that’s got a TMag adapter and the same length - Happy birthday to me is all I can say.  It plays at 45” BTW. That seems to be my sweet spot.

I can’t see myself changing out any other equipment so this is around what I would typically spend on stuff in a season anyway - $600? For ten yards and and additional fairway hit per round?

My index is 6.0 today. Let’s see where I’m at 6 months from now.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

With my season nearing its end, I've updated the main post with my final thoughts on the AutoFlex and also have posted them below.

Final Review: Dumina AutoFlex SF505X Driver Shaft - Oct. 8, 2021

I've had the pleasure of playing the AutoFlex 505X for the majority of the season. Currently, I have about 25 rounds on its final configuration (more on that later). I still would not classify driver as the most reliable part of my game, but there is something special about this pink and black shaft.

Looks - 4/5 Stars
4stars.png.e3824993ef4a77d2a903773753bacb95.png

The pink/black combo isn't going to be mistaken for any other shaft. I assume most love it or hate it. If I'm being nit picky the font selection is not my favorite. The serif lettering of SF505 screams "Times New Roman."

If I wanted to drop some (more) cash, a custom blacked out or pink/black driver head would look nice with the shaft.

Feel - 5/5 Stars
5stars.png.93460113b3fdc5e80c7015075d0cffa9.png

As advertised, the AutoFlex feels very whippy everywhere but on the downswing. After months of swinging it, going back to any other driver shaft is an odd feeling. I let my brother-in-law try it a few weeks ago at the range. He handed it back to me after one swing.

Despite the feel, I've had no issue determining where the ball is striking the club face. Keeping with the whip analogy, there seems to be a very linear release of energy through the ball with no defined bend point.

Basic Characteristics - 5/5 Stars
5stars.png.93460113b3fdc5e80c7015075d0cffa9.png

I've mentioned the most obvious characteristic of the AutoFlex already - it's very light and whippy feeling at address. So much so that the shaft almost feels brittle. I've had no issues with durability so far.

  • Trajectory - The AutoFlex produces a towering trajectory on my best swings. Good shots are a slight draw or fade depending on the day. I am playing my Callaway Epic Max LS head at 8 degrees and have no issues launching the ball.
  • Accuracy - Arccos shows I have retained about the same accuracy throughout the season with and without the AutoFlex. On good swings the AutoFlex is extremely accurate. On less than ideal swings it seems to help limit damage. Worries about the flexibility of the shaft and its effects on accuracy are unfounded.
  • Distance - The AutoFlex is an absolute bomber when paired up with the correct head. My Arccos Smart Distance has increased to 288 yards recently. I also hit a career best 320-yard drive this season with a little wind help with the 505X in the bag.

Getting the correct fit is important. I started my adventure by pairing the AutoFlex with a standard Callaway Mavrik head. I did not have great success, and I was considering selling the AutoFlex midway through the season. Only after purchasing a Callaway Max LS head, and subsequently removing five grams of weight from the head, did I start to reap the benefits of the AutoFlex. This combination produces high, tight baby push draws when I'm swinging my best.

On-Course Performance - 5/5 Stars
5stars.png.93460113b3fdc5e80c7015075d0cffa9.png

Rather than repeat myself, the short summary of the AutoFlex's on-course performance is that I maintained roughly the same level of control, added 20-plus yards to my Arccos Smart Distance and hit more 300-plus yard drives in the past two months than I had in the previous two seasons of playing.

My home course is generously listed at about 6,200 yards from the back tees. I usually hit driver on 10 holes. Since switching to the AutoFlex, I have partial wedges into most of the par 4s, and I reached the shortest par 5 this season going driver/8-iron. When I'm playing well I scare par. That is a huge improvement from last season when my best days sniffed 80.

Miscellaneous - 1/5 Stars
1star.png.51ae5361fbfcbc88ad9ebab25a43f09c.png

"Cody, how could you rate everything else so well and this category so poorly?"

Don't be dumb like me. Please don't buy this shaft without swinging it first or getting a proper fitting. If that's not a possibility (which is probably the case), please prepare to tinker with different weights and heads. This turns an already expensive experiment into something even more expensive.

In my case, I tried two different weights in the Mavrik head before giving up. A used Epic Max LS set me back another $400 mid-season. I still needed to drop the weight some more to get everything working for my swing. I have over $1,000 invested in this shaft/head combination.

Writing the last sentence makes me a little sick to my stomach.

Play it or Trade it? - 5/5 Stars
5stars.png.93460113b3fdc5e80c7015075d0cffa9.png

I found the holy grail combo for my swing and don't plan on tinkering with this particular setup anytime soon. At this point, continued practice will do me more good than trying to chase down another driver combination.

Conclusion

The mystical AutoFlex seemed to make a big difference in my game this season. Is it worth $800? I still don't know. But what I do know is that it's working for me right now, and I have no plans to make any changes in driver for quite some time.

Final Score - 4/5 Stars

Great review.  I'll agree that it takes some tinkering to get it right.  I started with an M4D head and it worked nicely but way too much left.  I bought a SIM2 and have settled on it.  I messed with lowering the headweight but ultimately went back to the standard which on mine was 198.  I've gained consistency and 10-15 yards and the feel of the driver is really good.  I hit the sim2 with RevKev's ventus blue and it just isn't in the same category, at least for me.  For me it's worth the investment, No plans to switch it out or do more messing with it.  Just go play some golf now that rainy season is over.

We’re in the same boat - our season is just starting. We play in the summer but you loose so much yardage here because the courses are wet that it’s tough to truly judge that aspect of a driver.

I’m just in the tinkering stage. Today will be my first round. I’m over in Port St Lucie where it poured for two hours yesterday afternoon so no roll for me today, yet again. 😞

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Played my first round with the shaft in yesterday. I hadn’t noticed the “ whippy feeling prior but did then.” Drove very well - accurate, long for me. 220-230 all day in the wet.

we shall see what the weekend brings

SF 505 sounds like a highway in Northern California, Rev.

You've piqued my interest, however.

If it's not an imposition, what's the full name of this shaft with which we're bombing it 230?

I've had more birthdays than you, I believe

[we've both had a recent one from what I see in the posts--happy belated birthday],

and might find the information beneficial.

EDIT: it's right in the freakin' thread title!!!

Sorry, Rev, but happy belated birthday anyway.
