Unofficial Titleist Hybrid-14 bag review

Recommended Posts

This started out to be a review of the OGIO Woode bag as there was a separate thread started here that really intrigued me.

The OGIO bag looked great and had some new modern design features that appeared would be just what I was looking for. Having used 14-way bags for the past 10+ years, the Woode was definitely a venture into the unknown for me with a more open-top concept. After a couple rounds however, I just realized that the OGIO Woode bag just wasn't for me. Anybody interested in knowing the details, just feel free to DM me or ask on the thread and I'll share my experience.

So the OGIO went back to the store and in return, I ended up ordering the Titleist Hybrid 14. This was noted as the MGS "Hybrid" bag OTY among the stand bags. Unfortunately the selection was extremely limited at Golf Galaxy so I had to order it and wait it out. After a few agonizing days of waiting, the bag arrived. I've actually had it for a couple of weeks and was finally able to get it out yesterday for it's maiden voyage.

Here are the criteria that I plan to review and point system.

Design/Functionality - 30 pts

Build quality/Materials - 20 pts

Looks - 20 pts

Innovation - 10 pts

Keep/Return - 10 pts

Design/Functionality - 26/30

This will be the more in-depth part of the review so bear with me.

To be completely up front and honest, there's nothing really game-changing about the H-14. But I think that's what I was looking for all along. In a game that already involves so much complexity just to play it, why overcomplicate it further with something like a golf bag? I will add though that Titleist did include some nice subtle touches where it matters.

One of the things that I actually really liked about the OGIO Woode was the vertical configuration of the woods down the right side of the bag and the horizontal placement of the irons. I had made a comment that I really wish that they made a 14 slot bag with the same setup. Well unbeknownst to me at the time, there was such a bag and that happened to be the Titleist Hybrid 14. Well you could probably do that with a lot of bags TBH but the configuration seems nearly identical to the Woode.

OGIO Woode configuration

0306211727a.jpg.2b1928b01e20c9ced04e42383a5cbcc1.jpg

Pockets all seem to be placed in the right spots with just enough room for plenty of stuff to be stored. The zippers all seem to glide and open very smoothly with no "special angle required" to get them open. The concept of the "hybrid" is to have the light-weight use of a stand bag but with the accessibility and carrying capacity of a cart bag and I think Titleist did a great job.

There are 2 pockets in the front. The pocket on the top appears to be insulated and probably big enough to hold 2-3 cans of whatever or 2 large bottles of Gatorade. I bring a 64 oz Thermoflask to the course so I don't have a need for the cooler pocket. The cooler pocket does however hold PLENTY of balls. Another subtle but effective feature is that being that this appears to be an insulated pocket, it could also be the perfect place to store your leather gloves between rounds and will help prevent them from drying out.

0313211826.jpg.332f21b768390b7ab3e3736deef7addc.jpg

0313211826a.jpg.9c5919d408a5a769da83da9acca38249.jpg

The lower pocket is probably bigger than most. I don't carry a lot on the course so I'm not sure I'll ever come close to utilizing this to it's full potential. A nice feature though is that the front pocket does break away in the event you need to add a patch or have some fancy embroidery done. Come to think of it.. would be a great spot for an MGS patch if such a thing existed...

0314211917.jpg.ee0cb0519c3d8ba7edf79b70e2c28857.jpg

The valuable pocket is a vertical zipper. I've only had diagonal zippers on other bags so the verdict is still somewhat out on this. It definitely wouldn't be a "deal breaker". I do however like the zipper lock function and that the pocket has a waterproof zipper. Like all other valuable pockets, this one is fleece lined to keep your stuff well-protected.

The strap-through passage works flawlessly. This allowed the bag to stay snugly in place the entire round without requiring any readjusting.

0313211825.jpg.d6a58bfa2abe30e2dca22b9e897241de.jpg

Will the real Hybrid-14 please stand up!? I'm very happy to report that it does! A very important criteria point for a stand bag is that it must stand as well vertically on its own as it does with the support of the legs. Titleist appeared to place some decent emphasis on this design feature as they placed 4 round base pads to help keep the bag stable when standing. For me this is a must being that I don't have room in my garage to store the bag laid out on the legs.

0314211919.jpg.49fa4978544ec5fe879327ad5d7f051f.jpg

Now for the most important matter.. the 14-way slots. Being that this is probably the most important selling point, Titleist did their diligence and put some really good thought into how this piece was designed.

InShot_20210314_201017907.jpg.ea70877a39559a41b1a7932c2ee1cc53.jpg

The openings are plenty big for at least standard and mid-size grips. The linings of each divider are individually sealed all the way down and just open at the very bottom.

Another subtle but nice and hidden function is the inner access zipper located inside the garment compartment. This allows access to the inside bottom of the bag in the event that you drop any items down the dividers like tees, ball markers, sunglasses, car keys, etc. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it really sucks! So this is a very convenient feature.

0313211921.jpg.f066d6892751a5229c81f12bfd28f122.jpg

You can see from the photo, I've got my clubs configured very similarly to how the OGIO was laid out but with individual dividers. Additionally, the double slot works perfectly for me because I happen to carry 2 56° wedges. Long story sort, in AZ it's good to keep a "desert" club handy. I happen to like my 56° to get up and over stuff and back into play. This leaves an empty slot for my alignment sticks.

Another big plus is the abundance of handles and "grabby" pieces. The main pick up handle is made of rubber but is pretty stout and quite ergonomic and is supported by a bottom grab flap that is pretty easy to find when hoisting the bag in and out of the car. There are 3 soft plastic lift handles built into the top and even the top side of the leg stand is very handy to grab onto. No matter which angle you approach the bag, there's always something sturdy to grab onto with both hands.

0306211245b.jpg.a2e07e4c83394382d00e1d16f57a07c8.jpg

0314211915b.jpg.5de899cac0f1cd1b73119239defb4941.jpg

0313211848.jpg.2952eefc4225e5e27c8bde143968c63d.jpg

Lastly, and this might be the only knock on functionality, but the carry straps seem a little on the thin side and the cross brace is all sewn in so there's no 4-way adjuster that some carry bags have. That said, I'm not planning to carry the bag while walking and will strap it to a push cart for my monthly walking round so this isn't really a big issue for me.

0314211913.jpg.4a60535fe1687e98f54e49f3a478fd4c.jpg

0314212118.jpg.66f212a7e88ccd8d0a1809e28c563bdc.jpg

Build quality/Materials - 18/20 pts

The outer material appears thick and durable. It seems like a pretty good quality nylon canvas. It would have been nicer to see some rip-stop used but overall I think it will hold up just fine.

0314211913a.jpg.136f2e0c4055155d2cb34780ee108617.jpg

0314211915a.jpg.b794923f89aeef16840f3f7e85219bad.jpg

The sleeves for the dividers seem extra thick and durable and I'm hopeful that they won't wear out over time. Also, the thickness of the divider sleeves seems to be helpful in directing the clubs in and out of the bag without catching as can be an issue with these bags.

The top material is a nylon mesh that I've seen on other bags that had proven to be quite durable.

0314211914.jpg.7fdfb791d253793ad2d59e97e43dfd02.jpg

All of the stitching appears to be very good quality and very durable. Double stitching seems to be done anywhere stitching is required so that just gives good feelings about quality.

Handles are all made of pretty rugged (for golf anyway) material that don't give any concerns about snapping or breaking down over time. The OGIO top side handle appeared a tad flimsy for my liking and I feel MUCH better with these.

The legs are made of thick high-grade aluminum so while helping to reduce weight, they are very sturdy. Also, you can see that they did a good job hiding a lot of the leg triggering mechanism. Pressure required to eject the legs isn't too much but definitely requires some and I haven't found the legs popping out unnecessarily.

0314211915c.jpg.609142d614f49d63c9bf8660166a5552.jpg

Looks - 20/20 pts

Dare I say, this is a very "handsome" looking bag? It's not overly busy and overloaded with tech, graphics, or tacky details. I would say that the OGIO was just nearing the limit of being too busy. There appear to be plenty of color ways for most tastes. 2 of my favorite colors, grey and Royal blue just happened to be paired together and I'm glad that I had the patience to wait a few extra days since they didn't have this in the store. Overall this isn't a bag that demands attention.. but definitely gets it.

0306211727.jpg.9b7c41878fffd9f6f18e04510ea22557.jpg

There really isn't much to say about the looks as they just speak for themselves. It's a clean, subtle look that I just really like and fits my taste perfectly.

Innovation - 6/10

I really didn't give this portion much weighting in the point system. Honestly there isn't anything specifically "game-changing" about any of the design features, it's a golf bag. After spending a couple of rounds with a bag that was attempting to be highly innovative (OGIO Woode), I just concluded that I really didn't need a bag like that. I would just say that the Titleist H-14 is perfect for what it is, and whatever attempts were made to be innovative, were done thoughtfully and well.. and on somewhat of a sophisticated, James Bond-like fashion.

Keep/Return - 10/10 points

This one's a keeper!

Total: 80/90 pts

FYI, I plan to provide more info once I get the bag loaded on a push cart for a walking round. More pics and details to come.

And yes this is a duplicate post from the "bags" thread but I figured it might make more sense to be here since it is a review 🙂

Nice looking bag, Stu! Thanks for the review.

I like 14-way tops that allow for some flexibility. I don't think I could have gone with the Woode either. The clubs shifting out of place slightly would have bothered me too much!

The 14 way divider - a must for those who have OCD so bad we call it CDO because that is the correct alphabetical order.

I had an old Titleist bag w a 14 way divider, and really miss that. When i wore out the straps I went for the lightest bag I could find - that divider is worth 1.5 to 2 lbs - at least those bags always are two to three pounds heavier.  Now that I’ve quit carrying and moved to a push cart it may be time to look at a 14 way divider again. If I could find just the divider I’d add it to my existing bag, but that’s not really an option.

Great review. I have a Bag Boy Chiller cart bag with the 14 way top. It's a great bag but just a little to big for me and hard to travel with. I've been looking at the Titleist Hybrid and the Bag Boy Hybrid so your review is very timely.

So true!

Yeah this bag definitely suites my CDO tendencies nicely. And by "tendencies" I mean "serious issues" 😛

Push cart round update..

So I'm just gonna come out and admit something. My pushcart is fairly old and quite frankly kinda crap. It's a Caddytek Caddylite 11.5 v2. I'm sure that 5 years ago it might have been ok but by today's standards, it just cuts more cheese than mustard. So I may be looking for a new cart in 2021.

For starters, the cart was not made for the bag or vice versa. The section where the legs meet their base was about 2 mm too wide for the insert slot on the cart. The difference is so small that it's extra annoying that they don't fit together. This definitely made for a more wonky setup. I didn't really get a chance to try this out before going to the course otherwise I would have just used one of their nicer Sun Mountain carts.

So I'm not going to knock any of the performance of the bag due to the flaws of the cart.

I just ended up folding an extra towel amd stuffing in the slot space. This is where the leg buckle straps came in handy as for the first 2 holes the legs would pop out due to the awkward pressure on the leg hinge.

sketch-1616363456470.png.7a1ed77b09ea794daf2a4651a7a23e3b.png

So after getting things sorted out with the mechanics, the bag completely did it's job as expected.

Previously when walking, I had to store my 64 oz water jug in a wardrobe pocket as they were the only pockets big enough on my previous bag.. and left the bag weight somewhat lopsided. As you can see here, it nearly fits most of the jug in the pocket nice and secure. Additionally I was able to easily find a spot for 2-32 oz bottles of Body Armor drink totaling 1 gallon of liquid which I like to consume during warm AZ spring walking rounds. That said, I just had to relocate the balls to the lower pocket which is no biggie at all and there is still PLENTY of room in the lower pouch.

0320211529a_HDR.jpg.6ed4dfa2f730fc37128a454f9c8c8c05.jpg

Additionally, there was ample room for other necessities like sunscreen, ball markers, green repair tool, driver wrench, tees, and even a 24 oz coffee Thermos that my buddy decided to give me back just before we tee'd off so I didn't have time to run it back to the car.

Another cool little pocket that I'm now calling the "snacky pouch" is an open, easy access slit in the bottom right side that goes far enough in to hold a good variety of snacks. I was able to stowe away 3 granola bars and a bag of jerky.

0314211917.jpg.0b21e390ef46adf9d6340243d94a4397.jpg

An additional pocket (well actually 2 on each side) that is just perfect for what I need it for is the front side pockets. They're made of a stretchy mesh and are perfect for carrying my JBL Flip 5 speaker. Usually in a cart, the speaker fits perfectly in the drink holder. But when walking, I've always had to find a makeshift spot so the speaker stays secure. They stretch just enough and are big enough to slip the speaker in without feeling like I'm over working the material but allowing the speaker to stay snugly in place.

Mine is on a truck for delivery so I’ll snap a few photos on a newer CaddyTec push cart later today!

Thanks for the update @azstu324 after your walking round.  It seems like the dividers did their job well which I know can sometimes be a struggle on pushcarts.

I did forget to mention that I took the bag to the range on Saturday and there wasn't any snagging or hanging up of the clubs when the bag was tilted on its legs. Same with when on the cart.

I think you were curious about that so that should be a big + for you

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

Looks like this one will not work for me, which sucks... because the rest of the bag looks and feels top notch.

At first blush everything is good.  I LOVE this colorway.  It’s the perfect shade of gray and the red and black accents are great. Pockets are easy to get into and seem to have a true function rather than a just pocket count on a spec sheet thing.  Top seems to work well and I didn’t have and issues and only minor issues you’d expect with a collapsing base designed and 14 full dividers, they’re going to get bunched up with the stand legs deployed, so a club may not go all the way down as your first put it in.  However, when I picked the bag up the legs snapped back in place with authority and the club slid into its final resting place.  Awesome.

6077C2C7-19F1-42D4-954A-052FED848CC3.jpeg.d59aae116de551495376379556f2cc81.jpeg

So what’s the issue?  Everything looks good right?

I have a CaddyTec CaddyLite EZ v8 which I got last year off Amazon,  It has a top that is usually pretty good at allowing stand bag legs to not interfere with the bag resting in the cart.  My old Speedzone Stand Bag legs rested perfectly with the top and the OGIO bag works well in that respect as well.

Here you can see the legs are set much wider on this bag and the legs are actually the contact points with the top:

With the arms locked in and ready to roll it is basically riding with 4 very narrow contact points, here is a photo of where the arms contact the side of the bag:

Even with a full wrap around strap, the bag will twist while sitting on the cart after going over a few bumps.  There is just not enough traction to hold it in place.  Here’s the Woode bag and you can see that it is a better fit for the top of the push cart with all the contact points to hold it in place.  It’s not going to twist on the course:

It’s frustrating that the rest of the bag is top notch, and Titleist designed the legs and top as a “push cart” friendly design, it just doesn’t work with this one and I’d imaging many of the current CaddyTec models with the same top design.

When I return this one I’m going to see if the legs are set closer on the Hybrid 5 model, Otherwise it’s back to the drawing board for me!

Man that breaks my heart. Being that I walk so infrequently, this isn't so much of an issue for me. Also, because I know I need a new cart anyhow, I guess at this point I'd just look for a cart that fits the bag. But man that really sucks and I'm sorry for the major let down. The gap on your cart looks even bigger than on mine and that would drive me absolutely bonkers!

I wonder if Titleist has a list of bags that these are supposed to work with?

Well keep us posted man!

I had emailed the brass asking if there were any talks around the water cooler of bag patches.. well I couldn't wait for a response and decided to take matters into my own hands.

Hopefully this doesn't cause any trademark issues.. I'm only repping.. not ripping

It's actually not embroidery. It's a vinyl iron on.

My sister has a printer that makes stickers and stuff like this. She just scans in the image and it cuts out the negative space. The bottom side has a clothing grade adhesive. Then I transfer it with an iron.

We'll see about the durability. I'm hoping this would be something that MGS would find to be a good idea and maybe put into production. Or like a round embroidery patch. I'm sure they'd sell well.

Any chance an owner of the Hybrid 14 bag is able to provide a measurement of the distance between the centre of the two hinges? 🙏

I had it around 7-7 1/4 if I remember correctly. I was hoping the smaller top of the hybrid 5 also meant a narrower gap but I think they’re the same. My push cart can’t accommodate legs with more than around a 6 inch spacing.

azstu324 can actually measure it for you since I don’t have the bag anymore, but figured I’d share a rough estimate for you.

Thanks very much mate, that's close enough. I just measured the opening part on my buggy and it's 6" at it's widest too, what a shame 😭

I like 14-way tops that allow for some flexibility. I don't think I could have gone with the Woode either. The clubs shifting out of place slightly would have bothered me too much!

I switched to a 14-way from a 4-way, and boy I tell ya... What a difference that was! I will never go back to anything less than a 14-way.

This bag fits in a standard push cart contrary to previous comments. The legs just need to be "snapped" in.

It's a very nice bag.   It also repels water much, much, better than my previous Titleist Sun Mtn bag.

See attached photos of the bag with the Caddytek push cart (Costco).  I also tested it on a Clickgear at PGA Tour Superstore.   Really happy with the bag after two rounds.

Glad it worked for you! There was no way I was going to be able to snap or lock my legs in there without breaking the legs. It looks like your caddytec top is the older standard clip system where I have the one with firm plastic bars that lock the top of the bag in. Maybe the spacing is narrower on mine than yours.

it’s great to see it working for some folks though. Such a nice bag.

Not sure if anybody's following this or if it's even a relevant post any more but I found a push cart that works extremely well with the bag

The BagBoy Nitron seems to fit like a glove. I have been looking around feverishly for the past couple of months. I even placed an order for the CaddyTek swivel front wheel from Costco.. I've got a buddy that has the Caddytek explorer V8, which I'm assuming uses the same attachment components as the Swivel offered at Costco. After our round last week and sans-costco order, I asked if I could double check the upper collar to make sure it was going to fit my Hybrid 14.. womp womp womp.. it was way too small and then I completely remembered this thread and a few other posts around the forum talking about Caddytek being one of many that don't work. So I took to the internet and found absolutely NOTHING. I'm just kind of beside myself wondering why there isn't a list out there or more complaints about why this bag just doesn't work with so many carts. You'd think by now that Titleist or someone would have comprised a list of applicable push carts.

I digress..

I did however find a cart that appears to fit like a cabretta leather glove!

At first, the brackets still seem to be too narrow when just pushing the bag straight back. But when I lifted the bag and then slid it down so the brackets actually fit over the top of the legs, this thing is rock solid and wouldn't budge. It's very tight and nothing seems forced as if to push anything to a breaking point.

I found this one on OfferUp for $150 and it's probably a 9/10 condition. Looks like it was maybe used 10 times. I may end up doing a separate review on the cart after a few rounds but so far it seems like an awesome cart as far as functionality, ease of use, and stability.

Glad you found one that worked!  I really wanted to love that bag as I still think it is one of the best looking outhere, but my Caddytek made it a no go!  The PING traverse is working awesome though and I'm enjoying the cart bag life when I'm not walking with the pushcart.
