Custom ProPutt Sytem Green with TrueStrike Hitting Mat & Chipping Pad

Recommended Posts

This is the first in a series of posts on what I hope will be my ultimate back yard set up.  I'll walk you through the process, mistakes I've made, what I've learned and experienced as we do this.

Last summer I was on the hunt for an artificial turf putting green I could put in my back yard AND a hitting mat, preferably all in the same unit.  Something big enough I can set a net on (Sporina as you'll see later) and also a Mevo+ at the other end.   I want to have a number of different putts - including some long ones, and I want some fairway and rough to practice pitch shots and chipping.  That's all I want...

After a lot of research, pricing comparisons, emails and phone calls evaluating several different competitors I found everything I wanted with the ProPutt System.  They took their "Green Monster" model, and in addition to the four cups/holes in the corners made just one middle cup/hole specifically positioned where I can use the Mevo+ for putting, and then cut space in the base to insert a TrueStrike hitting mat/insert.  Also added their two turf chipping pad which I'll set off off the edge to use for my pitches and chips.

I spent too much time hem-hawing arounds trying to get everything just so - and by the time I placed my order in October, they were up to a six week backlog, and a wait on the True Strike mat.  So by the time it finally arrived, well, the golf season in Iowa was over and my neighbor who was going to help me build the base system with pea gravel and tamp it all down convinced me to wait until spring to construct it.

IMG_6566.JPG.6ab1af927abcc940b7e05e5ced6859ed.JPGIMG_6568.JPG.a241c6e0318890647c80a79e7033982f.JPGI had no idea how big/bulky the stuff I ordered was going to be.  I had to make sure was home for UPS Freight to do a drop shipment at the edge of my driveway.  The driver was nice enough to let me use his pallet jack to haul everything to my back porch where it would sit for the winter.

The one thing that did get put to use this fall/winter has been the turf for the chipping pad.  It is about four feet in diameter.  So I rolled it up, and hauled it to the hotel I work out of all winter long to practice chipping onto a BirdieBall Mat (see other official review of that).  I have to say, I've been very impressed with the quality and realistic feel of this mat.  The chipping mat is 4 feet in diameter, and the "rough" is supposed to be 1.75 inches high.  Enough you can push most of a ball into it.

IMG_6601.JPG.fe5f18190dfc5baad02e277d7928905d.JPG

One of the things I think is particularly impressive is that it is not just the blades of grass, but it also has this cork screw like "thatch" in the rough as well.  It absolutely grabs the club when you chip out of the rough.  I've hit plenty of fat shots out of there this winter.  The fairway portion of the chipping pad is exactly what you'd expect.

It all has some give to it.  I'll get a better picture to post of just exactly how think it all is.  It is basically two different pieces of turf sticked together and sealed on the bottom.

Ive made a few full swings off the fairway portion, but haven't tried a full swing yet out of the rough.  Looking forward to giving some pitches a try.

IMG_6603.JPG.865f502885ba3336b0549967fadfb46e.JPG

I expected some loose blade of grass, and sure enough I've had some.  I'm always finding a blade of grass somewhere in the hotel. I lost almost all of these the first weekend, since then its just the occasional single blade, but they still show up.

Settling on what hitting mat to get was the most research intensive part of my search.  What can I take full shots off of, won't bounce the club through the ball, have some realistic feel, and save my joints.  I'd looked at Fiberbuilt, the Country Club Elite, and Rain or Shine's house brand. The key selling points for me ultimately was the ability to customize the whole project - put the hitting turf where I wanted it in the green.

I've got a series of pictures here of just exactly what the True Strike mat looks outside and in...

The hitting piece comes as a pretty hefty self contained piece. I've kept it indoors over the winter as they recommend so the gel packs don't freeze.   This pad is 14 inches by 35 inches.  It has clips all around it to keep the turf held down over the top of the gel and the frame.

IMG_6817.JPG.3366a388e7d6a58e6de846d1f8eae31e.JPG

Here you can see the top removed (you can see the end clips that insert into the base, not pictures are some clips that fasten along the side.  You can see the gel in the middle and a mat that extends over a very firm foam that makes up the rest of the base.

IMG_6818.JPG.664c08c35ad6cc0c2bb2345a31daa077.JPG

Here I flipped up the gel pack out of its position.

IMG_6819.JPG.c68900b3c734a4b841e642acdd8c5329.JPG

I'm pushing pretty firmly here.  It has give, but its not overly spongy.  Something I was actually concerned about with the Fiberbuilt - that it would be too easy to glide through it.

IMG_6820.JPG.87fbb6500723c764fe5dc37ca5fa4789.JPG

The modular base pieces are all roughly 2 foot by 2 foot squares.  To fit True Strike in, they custom cut a hole into two of the base pieces.

IMG_6821.JPG.c1227772ea7cbe34abe28edf455299ac.JPG

A better look at the base piece - you can see how they interlock.

IMG_6823.JPG.9ada20855b38e10bfce79c1b2f7e79df.JPG

This circular piece here is the chipping pad base.  It is four corner pieces fastened together.  You can see the holes where the putting cups would be placed, and they provided inserts to cover/fill them with you you can stand on it.  You can see to the side I have all the other pieces stacked up.

Hopefully everything dries out this week, and we can pack the pea gravel next weekend.

On of the things I really liked about the ProPutt System was the ability to build to what you wanted and customize it.   They were patient.  I did a lot of emailing back and forth with Brian at ProPutt asking questions - can I do this, how does this work, what would you recommend for that.  It all looks simple enough now - but I'm a planner and don't want surprises.

Thank you for your reviews, I think that Pro Putt Systems offers the absolute best indoor putting greens available anywhere. By the way, I found a more compact and budget option that is convenient to use at home or in the office. In fact, I was looking for good golf shoes and found All golf reviews blog that has golf clothing and equipment buying guides. So I found different models of indoor golf putting mats that are inexpensive and I want to buy one for my office. Do you think this is a good idea or should I spend more money to buy the Pro Putt System?

Last week we spread out a ton of concrete fines on top of sand and soil.

Today it was time to tamp the base down and pack it tight so we’d have a good base layer.

Put down some weed barrier - not that there will be any weeds coming up - but it also helps to prevent erosion - and it turned out it helped to slide the panels together.

The most challenging part, putting it all together. Get yourself some rubber mallets to help hammer everything into place. You can’t have any gaps, it’s gotta be tight. There are screw holes that they guys from ProPutt said did not need to be used to hold it together. If I were to do this again I think I’d drill in a screw on each side of a piece to pull them super tight. It was hard getting them tight. Too often we had small cracks that we didn’t think anything about only to roll out the turf and discover we were about an inch short... an inch of small cracks. So we had to pry it apart and start over. Prying it apart with a five foot pry bar we discovered that actually forced the other pieces together tighter. Still, a lot of rubber malleting

Then literally roll out the turf (see above in first post). I used rubberized mulch to go around the edges.

The Sporina net fits perfect between the putting cup flags.  There are two poles that hold the top portion of the net up (look for the official review) so I placed a couple of old head covers under them so they don’t damage the turf.  I don’t know if they would, but I’m not about to find out on day one .

More to come after I’ve had some serious time to practice with it. I’d like to get a stimp (seems quick) and practice w the True Strike a bit.

I discovered I didn’t get my concrete fines base layer as flat and level as I’d intended. It’s hard. I stand in awe of those who build golf greens for a living.  I’ve got a bit of down hill toward the south (where I will place the net) and I have a break on the north end near the cup. In fact by all my cups there is some left to right break (from the center toward the edge). So that’s a next weekend project. ProPutt sells some sort of “closed cell poly” material to create breaks by putting them under the rubber base - so I may give that a try. Maybe exaggerate one corner and take the break out of another.

In the meantime, got out the stimp meter today and it’s running about an 11 or 12. Again, I know I’ve got some downhill (12) and some up hill (11). It is not perceptible to my eye, but the ball definitely rolls farther off the stimp to the south.  That’s pretty quick, and I’m ok with that.  The good news is it is very consistent.  The roll looks the same each time, stays on line, or at least rolls true with the break.

The turf has some texture to it. In fact, kneeling on it in shorts hurts my knees.  Of course everything kind of hurts today, but the texture definitely hurts.  Though She Who Must Be Obeyed was just laying on it soaking up some sun with no complaint...

Yeah, it ties everything together well.  I get no credit for thinking it up, just purchasing it....

No surprise, the fairway side is easy to chip off of, the rough side is, well, rough... so I’d say it gets points for realism. And that’s what I wanted. I can slide it back another ten feet or so, so will play around from different distances. It’s maybe 15/20 pounds, so no biggie.  Very portable. The turf is loose, so can just rotate on the pad.

im a little gun shy about taking too big a swing too far away from the net, but I want to land balls ten to fifteen yards away it’s fine. Chip and runs from the fringe are fine. So yeah, I have enough short game stuff to practice and I need plenty of practice.

if a person had the space they could use the chipping pad indoors. I clearly did. Just no pitches....  but true chips are fine.

i think ProPuttSystems bread and butter is really indoor set ups. A guy with a basement/garage/attic/mother-in-laws-room he wants to convert with an already flat firm floor. But it works outside too. They’ll sell just the turf - but the interlocking base system just too smart to not take advantage of.

I ordered two sets of their “break kit” which are .25 and .50 inch thick sheets of closed cell foam.  I used them along the sides to actually level the base (it goes between the base panels and the ground) and to build up a corner so I had an incline up to a hole. I could probably find something similar at a Lowe’s or Menards - but I honestly wasn’t sure what they were referring to. Now I know.  Easy enough to slide in, and out, move around when I want to.

I’ve been a bit frustrated - assembling the panels we didn’t do the best job of getting them tight together.  Trust me, we tried.  But little 1/8 inch gaps add up over the course of all those panels.   It really bothered me in this north east corner where the floating cup, pulled all the way towards the center still didn’t line up with the pre cut hole.  This was by far the worst corner.  You can see the gap between the turf and the raised edge of the panel.

A4E3D4E1-5BB7-497B-95F3-035DC13D8796.jpeg.143e2ebbd7091c1b454e5d55972350e7.jpeg

Today I finally went to Lowe’s and got four sets of tie down straps with ratchets. Needed twenty five foot lengths so I could slide one under lengthwise and attach it to another.  I used this to pull the panels tighter together.  I worked my way across length wise, while also tightening both ends across the shorter distance at the same time (they each only needed one strap)

D277D95A-3C84-411A-85C4-CC0E4DBE6C96.jpeg.dd6f1a1fd6f8b629575f438b0ccb2efd.jpeg

Was kind of a pain sliding and ratcheting, loosening and repeating the process but I’m pretty happy with the result. The floating cup actually floats...  you can see n photo below that it’s much closer to the edge of the panel.

this is a before and after of the southwest corner - just had the camera phone oriented the wrong way but you can see the space between the edge of the turf and panel is much smaller.

Just took a lot more force to cinch those panels up tight.  Should have done this on day one...

Great idea with the ratchet straps.  My wife and I put our own flooring in.  So I feel your pain in trying to get things tight and snug.  When you're dealing with tiny gaps in flooring, even a few millimeters will drive you crazy.

How has the durability been?  I'd love to do something outdoors like this one day.

It’s been a month and a half since I set it up.  Aside from sweeping debris off when I want to putt (no greens keepers to mow it clean in the morning) it as good as new.  Has not faded in color or anything (I do not expect it to btw).   The True Strike still looks brand new.  I hit the ball from the same spot because I measured out from my Mevo+ and you wouldn’t know it.  Rather than folding up and putting my Sporina net away I just pull the poles, lay it flat on the green and set some rocks on it to keep the wind from catching it.  That weight does cause some indentation in the green from the poles, but in less than an hour the turf has sprung back and you would not know (it may happen much faster I just haven’t timed it)

The only really evidence of wear and tear is the chipping mat with the long turf.  The fairway side looks original.  But I’ve had a a fair number of blades of grass from the long grass come off.  See the top set of pictures and video.  To be fair, if you looked at it today and I had not told you a bunch of blades came loose, you would have no idea.  Looks nice and thick, no sign of where those blades came from.  I haven’t seen any impact on playability.  And now that is outside if I am still losing blades I don’t see them.

I will keep this thread alive and give some long term reports.  I know come winter I’m planning on rolling up the turf and covering it under a tarp. In part just because I think it’ll be easier to remove leaves and winter debris from just the panels than if the turf is there.

What is the chipping pad your using?

It’s theirs-ProPutt’s. The base is essentially four corner panels fastened together to make the circle, with two different pieces of turf fastened together for two different ways to practice.  I move it around and vary the distance to the net.

Subsequently energy prerequisite and rooftop space accessible are significant variables to think about before any establishment. While 200 watt solar panel chargers convert daylight into power, the establishment has an inverter to change over Direct current (DC), got from daylight to Alternating current (AC).

One year later and I thought it'd be good to give an update.

First - glad I spent the time, effort and money.  I've gotten a LOT of use out of it.  Have made a few small additions to make it more useable.

Things I would do over - do a better job with the base - I've got some places where its not as flat as I'd like it - yes, you want some break, but in the right places.  I really discovered that over the winter as well.  It probably would have been fine, but I wanted to protect it, so I covered it with two tarps sealed to make one with duct tape, and tucked the edges underneath.  This kept leaves, debris from accumulating, and animals off.  Snow piled up and melted, and I could see the low spots.  But when I peeled it off in the spring I was ready to go.

68020766313__CA6C624B-194E-4571-8CED-C734B7586641.JPG.88551b38b496c9c66f6b87b4c180ec72.JPG

You'll see below that this summer I added a cantilevered sun umbrella.  Where my practice area is located there is nothing to block the sun and it just bakes all day long.  Its fine in the morning, the sun is on my back and the day is just getting started, but that turf and plastic base really reflect the heat back at you come afternoon and evening.   So much so that I couldn't hardly be out there when we had 100 degree days. It just never cooled down.  I don't need to shade the whole thing, just where I'm going to be standing.  Its been great.  And yes, you have to be careful about what you are swinging, and where, but it works.

Second, you'll see in this picture below that I finally put up a side net extenders to the Sporina net.  Had too.  You may not be able to see the broken fence piece in the background, but as I've documented elsewhere on this forum, I came out of the winter hitting balls with the hosel.  I only need it on the right side, and it just stays in place.

The other addition was the iRange sticks to mount my phone or ipad on .  They can just stay in place and not move.  I've been taking skillest lessons and need to send in video on a regular basis.  So these have been great.  Very stable.  Have the one you can see for DTL shots, and another that is apparently obscured by the umbrella stand for face on.  I got them with the spikes to go in the ground, and that metal base if I want to put the ipad on the putting green to look at it when its connected to the Mevo+

Durability - this was the big question going in.  While my Sporina net has shown some UV damage (things fading, parts disintegrating) the matt and hitting turf have been great.  Now, there has been expected wear on the True Strike hitting pad - see below.  But that is to be expected.  The good news is they anticipate that.  This top piece of turf is replaceable.  The gel insert and base and frame stay as is.  I have a new piece on order and will install at the end of the season for approx $100.  Not too shabby for two years worth of digging.

This won't mean anything to anyone but me - but made a significant improvement to the practice area.  Took out the little retaining wall and planters behind the net - that allows me an additional three feet or so to slide the net back and give me that much more ball flight/time for the Mevo+ to read it.  And, came up with a new way to store the Sporina net - hopefully this keeps it from being the leaf and debris collector when I just left it laying on the green.

IMG_3057.JPG.7a8e308f169c7634e72394ce7dbddfe4.JPGThis is my second net - my first got all kinds of UV damage - again left it laying on the green until I put it away for the year.  This spring I got the larger net, and hopefully keeping it vertical will lessen the UV damage.  We'll see.  But the easy open/close and a few more feet of ball flight was my primary goal.   Just put in a couple heavy duty i-bolts on either side and found a 48 inch bungee at the hardware store to stretch across it.  Had a pretty windy weekend and everything stayed up.  I'm sure the neighbors wonder what is sticking up above the fence, but they already think I'm a little crazy.

I just ordered a PPG system myself and will now wait for it to arrive. I notice when you roll the turf over the base, there is no adhesive keeping the turf in place. They tell me the turf expands or contracts with the weather so that's why you do not want to glue or tape it down.

However, does the turf really stay put even with windy and rainy weather?

Yes, it is very heavy. It won’t go anywhere.   (Sorry I missed this, was out of country at the time)

Another vote that the Pro Putt System stay put.  I installed the Major Championship model with a chipping pad in my back yard (as much as we have here in Key West) in April.  My wife wanted a pool, I wanted putting green and we both won!

Friends knew I put this in and gave me a Master's and St. Andrew's flags which I proudly displayed!  I love being able to go out and getting some putting in.  My little sanctuary.
