what driver shaft do you use and why

Recommended Posts

I use a Lin Q gunmetal made by UST Mamiya. I use this shaft because it helped me reduce spin (this has been a major problem for me before this shaft and a few lessons). Most low spin shafts seem to have very low forgiveness as well, but this did not seem to be the case for me with this shaft, my misses just flew like misses with a mid spin shaft. Another major reason why I use this shaft is because it was what I was fitted for. I was lucky enough to have a fitting from Josh at TPC Sawgrass, and durring this fitting we were both surprised by how much this shaft helped me. I would love to hear what everyone uses

I use various shafts depending on the driver and what I go with. Some is tinkering because it’s fun and I want to see what new shafts feel like and how they perform. Usually I have whatever I get fit to which has been hzrdus yellow, Aldila rogue Max or black/silver. I’ve been fit to several UST mamiya shafts. Ventus blue has worked and surprisingly hzrdus smoke green was a good shaft for what I was looking for in feel and dispersion.

Josh is a smart guy and has done a bunch of my fittings before he moved to Florida

Same here.  The TD 50 Cat 2 was the frontrunner in distance and accuracy over the stock Alta CB Red and a handful of others at my recent Truespec fitting.  Better yet, after a questionable start, I found its groove (or it found mine) and I'm seeing better numbers in play than I did on the LM.

I play a Graphite Design AD-XC 6S. I selected it because I was a tester for the TSI 2 and during my Titleist fitting, it was the best performing stock / premium stock option that was in the fitting cart.

I have a KBS TD shaft waiting to be tried. Got that one in a giveaway from KBS.

Ventus Blue 6X for me.  Simple reasoning for me, just like so many others.  It was best for me during my Callaway fitting with the Mavrik Sub Zero head.

In the past was fitted to a Fuji Pro 2.0 Tour Spec with a TS3.  Next driver will probably be a different shaft combo, however I really do like the Ventus currently.  Since I'm getting a late start to the season this year and will not probably play until May, I'll likely give the the 2021 drivers a chance next year and see if they outperform anything.

every shaft I use I was fit in to at one point or another, except the wedges and putter. If I notice something wonky going on when I make good swings then I'll go get re-fit but if you have the opportunity I think you should play the one that you get fit for and ignore the label/brand name/hype in order to shoot your lowest scores.

Mitsubishi Tensei pro white tx 60 gram: I was fit for this shaft while I was playing a g410 plus and still had a negative aoa on my driver swing. Since then, I’ve changed my aoa to positive, and now play a g410 LST instead. I also just did a true golf fit online fitting which suggested a PXG 0211 9 degree with a Hzrdus yellow x stiff 60 gram, which I bought and have been testing...

Currently, I play the HZRDS Smoke Black x flex.  It's not too bad, but if money was no object I would be using the Whiteboard.  I had that in my previous shaft and still use it in my 3 wood.  I love the whiteboard.  The Smoke is nice too, don't get me wrong.  I have a quick transition and it is able to keep up with all the forces with no problem.

Back to using the venerable Grafalloy Prolaunch Red - it just works. Launch and spin are exactly where I want them to be (low/low) and the price is insanely cheap for a shaft of this quality. I liked it so much I got one installed in my 3-wood too.

That was the Holy Grail shaft for my G10 driver I used for years and years.  I should get one and pop a G410 adapter on it to compare to the Accra.

I compared the Accra gamer to a couple of EvenFlow's in different flex's.  The Accra won out but I am a tinkerer and will probably try a few others as time goes on.  I tend to stick with a clubhead once I find one I like and try different shafts & weight combinations.

Handcrafted Project X LZ 5.5 flex. I use it because it works. And despite being 5.5, it can handle a fast swing when 6.0 flex in other shafts wont handle the hard, fast swing which is 108 for me.

I chose it after trying 30ish driver shafts in various products. It's older, but its consistent for me

I went for a full driver fitting a few weeks ago and the best shaft for me was the KBS TD with the Ping 425LST. After going through the fitting, I am now a firm believer that there is no one size its all approach. Just because I like the KBS TD with the PIng, doesn't mean it will react the same when paired with a TM or Callaway head for example.

I have the Aldila Rogue White 130 M.S.I. 60 X as this is what I was recently fitted for. I booked a fitting as the ball was 'ballooning' and the fitter advised I was getting way too much back spin with my current, stiff shafted driver.

Lots of stiff and x flex shafts in this thread.  I'll throw in one for those of us who are speed challenged:  The Ping Distanza.  40 gram range, light flex and high launch.  It works perfectly for my 88 mph swing with a lazy, smooth tempo. The other day, I was getting close to the theoretical max carry for my swing speed with a 10.5 degree lofted head.  At 12 degrees, I probably would have gotten a little more carry.  If you are a smooth swinging player with <90 mph club head speed try it out.  One day I may try it in a non-Ping driver.

Paired my Callaway Epic Max LS 9* with the UST Lin-Q Purple 7F5, 1" tipped (hard).

My 3 finalists were:

  • Lin-Q Purple 7F5
    • #2 in overall launch numbers
    • Purple isn't for everyone
    • Lowest average spin
    • Tied for best L/R dispersion
    • Fastest average clubhead speed by 3.6 mph
    • Least efficient (smash factor); first in distance
  • Ventus Black 7X
    • Best consistency in numbers throughout swings
    • Tied for best L/R dispersion
    • Slowest average clubhead speed
    • Went into the fitting with a "Team Ventus" mentality
    • Most expensive
  • KBS TD 70 Cat5
    • Felt great
    • Largest L/R dispersion difference between the three
    • Highest average spin
    • Most punished on mishits
