The National at Ave Maria/Immokalee, FL

G'day boys and girls,

I'm currently in Florida on my annual vacation and heard about a course just opening in Ave Maria just near Immokalee.

The course opened on January 15th so everything is new. The check-in/pro shop is a portable building and the toilets are on a trailer. I'm told that eventually there'll a large clubhouse with a tiki bar, one or two restaurants, pool, tennis and pickle ball courts. House and condo construction is happening at a fairly rapid pace so there's a bit of dust and dirt flying around. There are no trees at this stage, but the greens and fairways are in nice shape. I'll say it now, when the course matures and the trees grow in about 12 months, this will be a very very good course. I paid about $64 inc tax, which is a very good value for this area at this time of year.

If you do go, don't follow the Google Maps directions, they'll take you to a dirt road that leads to the backside of the course. Go in through the main Ave Maria entrance on Oil Well Rd, take the first right and follow the signs.

Also, right now, bring you're own drinks and snacks as there's no beverage cart. I usually bring my own water anyway, so I didn't have an issue. No doubt, when the clubhouse is up and running there'll be a lot more available.

Onto the pics and description.

The temporary "clubhouse".

Score card. Check out #16 from the tips, yes that does say 701 yards. We played the Black tees but I'm going to try to play a hybrid Red/Black tomorrow. The par 3's on the front from the reds are a bit long for me.

The range and the short game area. Balls are free!

The rest of the photo's are of each hole, from the tee and my second shot, with a couple of greens and a rather large piece of wildlife thrown in.

I just want to know what’s up with the Snell that came bouncing through the courtyard at school. That driver must have been extra long today!

Wow Matt, good collection of photos.  That pro shop/office looks like the one here at Las Barancas... that has been here since it opened years ago 😄. The Sunshine state being where I started golf, I'm always curious about on-goings there.  It's amazing how much growth is going on.  Seems like they never run out of space. This is an article about it that has a cool aerial view.

Do you know who the architect was? It seems like it's missing a set of tees between 6400 and 7300 yards. They could even have 2 boxes between! Though if it's like the courses around here they will eventually bulldoze that back tee box for sanity's sake.

And while the par-3s on the back look normal, those on the front are asinine distances. Why do these modern architects think it's brilliant design to have amateurs play 3s that are well over 200 yards?? If they want length stretch out those short par 4s more.

Golf courses used to be designed simply with the land and played a bit tougher than they looked. Now courses are designed tough and set up impossible for anyone below PGA level. There's a special circle in hell for these people.

Nope, there's quite some distance between some of the holes.

No missing tees. Yes, a couple of those par 3's are ridiculous. Gordon Lewis is the designer. He's done Babcock National, Spanish Wells, Panther Run and a lot of others in SW Florida.

I kind of meant that with those distances they could add a set at 6700 and something around 7000 even. I think about Boulder Creek, that ciurse is supposedly 7500 from the tips, but I've never seen them on the back tee box. Or some of the boxes don't exist anymore but the yardages are still on the card

100% agree. I don't get the big jump down. They could have pushed some of the red and black tees back. Made the black 6200 or 6300.
