PXG Coolest Golf Brand?

Recommended Posts

I’m indifferent on PXG as a brand, but we have a very different definition of “cool.” The brands above are probably most admired, and technical leaders but they’re relatively staid, traditional and conservative - not cool! PXG is trying to be bold, innovative, and break the mold. At least they’re different, and they’ve carved out a niche - in an industry that’s not easy to break into. Cool? Who knows...

wiki says: Coolness is an aesthetic of attitude, behavior, comportment, appearance and style which is generally admired. Because of the varied and changing connotations of cool, as well as its subjective nature, the word has no single meaning. It has associations of composure and self-control[1] and often is used as an expression of admiration or approval. Although commonly regarded as slang, it is widely used among disparate social groups and has endured in usage for generations.

taylormade grabbed the #1 spot on my list precisely because they aren't staid or conservative.

between their social media marketing, the access they give inside of their tour van, things like the TM christmas card, and the guys on tour playing their clubs, i think they have the freshest and "coolest" appearance of all the brands.

if i were a young kid getting into golf, i'd be saving my money for a set of TM clubs because they do a good job promoting guys like Wolff, Morikawa, and Rory.  the same can be said for Cobra with Bryson and (the golfer formerly known as) Rickie Fowler.  then you get to Titleist, and Patrick Cantlay has the "cool" factor of a pocket protector.  way further down the line, and PXG gives off a drunk dad at a backyard bbq, yelling loudly about his high school glory days vibe.

With all the recent discounts, I'm not sure what the brand is anymore.  I will say from this year's most wanted driver testing, they must still be making some very good equipment.

The discounts were to unload inventory. The gen4 prices are what people expect PXG pricing to be.

They have grown as a company from just the high prices and the money is no problem type crowd and willing to pay whatever for something they want or what others can’t have to a company that still pushes that high end brand with the gen 4 stuff while expanding to having a separate line that is game improvement design clubs at a better than other brands especially in prices. They have had success in sales and now they want more of the market share and the 0211 line gives them that chance

Yup.

The new 0211 line is no different than the Mercedes A Class starting at $29,999.  It allows people to get their foot into the Mercedes door with the hope that they eventually buying the higher end models.  That is was PXG is doing now.

We have different definitions of cool, like most. TaylorMade is boring and classless to me, Titleist, Mizuno and Ping have class and some integrity at least- all in my opinion, no right or wrong. Taylormade and Callaway are the biggest marketing liars when it comes advertising IMHO, not cool.

To be honest I agree PXG advertising, Bob Parsons, is over the top obnoxious. But among people who have actually played the 0311 Gen3, everyone I’ve seen said they stand alone in terms of soft feel, and that appeals to me. I’d try them and overlook the ads, and I’m an admitted Mizuno fanboy.

different definitions of cool is what makes the world go round, so i'm all for that.

when thinking of "cool", i'm choosing to separate performance from personality.  PXG may well be the holy grail of clubs, and to your point most on here who have hit them love them.  but the brand isn't "cool" to me.  i'm a big fan of TM's youtube videos with their golfers.  to me, watching those videos and getting a glimpse in to the guys who are ambassadors for their brand makes it cool.

the other thing that carries a "cool" factor is who's playing the clubs on tour.  lots of people love Ping, and i know i love my G400 driver.  but Harris English looks like beige paint, so i have a hard time equating the brand with "cool"

Check the About Us link at the bottom of the page.  Hypebeast is a fashion site based out of Hong Kong.  But you'll have to be quick, because they seem to believe in infinite scrolling.

Cool is so subjective - how meaningful is it?  I have several Linksoul shirts in my closet; I used to think of the company as California cool.  Relaxed and understated.  Then Bubba bought a share of the company.  No one who whines that much is cool.  I still love their shirts, I'm sure I'll buy more (the quarterly gift card from Golfers Journal makes that easier), but my opinion of the company has changed.

One thing about that article... no byline.  Unlike many others on the Hypebeast site.  Was this paid content masquerading as editorial content?  That's truly uncool.

I also say no.

Its hard to believe that a brand that cost upwards of 3x more than the brands that win most on tour could pass for this. Just the fact that 99% of people cant afford them makes them uncool. Winning is cool, and they aren't often found in the winners circle.

I will say, however, I do love they try and take care of our military/first responders with a great discount. That does make them cool, it just benefits  a very small portion of the golf population.

Haven’t followed them much the past year, I assume?

The 2021 0211 line is priced less than many of the major new lines out and is a great iron it’s own right apart from the 0311.

I partially stand corrected. Now I have not had this set in my hands, but they very much look like PXG's most entry level improvement club based on offset and loft. And at $1400 dollars a set their least expensive set rivals other brands most expensive irons (TM P790 @ $1400, Callaway APex PRO @ $1300, Mizuno MP-20 @ $1300, etc) while PXG's premier sets come in at $2,800, a 2.15x increase. PXG does not make superior equipment based on MGS' own testing. Their irons don't appear in the top 5 of any of MSG most wanted Iron testing that I could find. In fact, PXG equipment only appears twice that I could see in any category (Most wanted best value, and High Swing Speed most forgiveness). This price to performance ratio, only in my opinion (which is what the OP asked for) is not cool.

But as I stated before, taking care of our military, police, fire, ems the way they do is way cool.

I like your list and definitely think PING is on top (no bias here, just don't look at what's in my bag, lol). I'm also thinking of brands that have evolved beyond just clubs and have become a force in culture as well - eg: Titleist hats, all of Puma/Cobra's clothes and accessories, etc...

I have no problem with your preferences, but I wouldn't call any of them "cool", except maybe Cobra. The rest are pretty buttoned up corporate brands to me. The exact opposite of cool.

I think “Innovative” is the correct descriptive word for PXG. I never thought I would be a PXG club owner, but with Bill Parsons “Heroes” discounts, I am now the proud owner of a PXG Driver and soon probably more.

I see PXG the same way I see guys driving Hummers.  When they first came out everyone wanted one, now when I see one I just laugh and think they are a bunch of a-holes.  No offense if you drive a Hummer.  Same goes with PXG.  Typically, the guys I see with PXG's suck.  They want to be noticed on the course, but can't hit the ball worth a damn.
