Why do people collect putters?

I've always understood a machined block of steel looks nice. However, I have never understood people's affection for collecting mass produced putters, most notably Scotty Camerons. I understand if someone collects one-off putters or special custom putters. However, I don't understand why people like collecting mass produced CNC machined putters. There is nothing unique about them, the premium for some of them is insane, and they really haven't changed for a few decades. I would be curious to hear why some of you collect putters like Scottys or Bettinardis. I'm legitimately trying to have some understanding.

Why do people collect anything?

Every manufacturer has their take on a design. They feel different. They are made from different materials. Milling patterns. The shaping of the heel, toes, bumpers, hosels, inserts are different.

So while to some putters look the same, there can be subtle differences.

As an anti-hoarder I don't see the point, but I guess people do it for the same reasons people collect anything else (art, sports memorabilia, comics/cards, etc.)...

I know people do, but I don’t know anyone personally who does. I insist of getting rid of any club(s) I replace, including putters. All but one of my 20 odd golf buddies use putters that look ancient, most are. But as noted above, we all have things we appreciate, and some are collectors too - nothing wrong with that.

I have a buddy that has a putting green in his shop and has a rack of about 70 putters on the wall....most of which he has used as his gamer at one time or another.

Because it’s a hobby within a hobby and also gives the opportunity to swap out a putter for a different look or feel.

I know a lot of people who collect putters but none of them collect otr scotty.

I'm with you on this one. If I find one that works it stays in the bag. In 32 years I've probably only had 5 putters. Current gamer came out in 2016 and still happy with it.

Collecting anything can look odd to those who don’t collect. I don’t collect putters, although I do currently have three, but I will admit that it has crossed my mind for no truly explainable reason. I do collect other things though, just because I enjoy it.

While I dont collect high dollar putters, i do currently own 22 putters (down from 45...ebay is my friend). Why?

Because I like putters. One is from my first tournament prize winnings in 1984ish, Ray Cook mallet. A bunch of Pings, an STX because its unusual, several old putters that I couldnt sell due to age and technology.

And finally, because I can. They dont eat anything and take up very little space. So when my current gamer misbehaves, I bring out a replacement.

Certain putters fit my eye so to speak. I have certain style putters such as a TP Mills #12 or Wilson Staff 8802/MacGregor IMG that I grew up playing with. So I am attracted to those classics but also like what Bettanardi has done with face milling.

I like the new Vault/Dalehead Ping Ansers models that have been released in last few years. I have many boutique putters not well known but they are new/modified versions of past brands/models with a touch of modern(face mill patterns or inserts).

I don't know I guess collecting putters for me is like someone collecting certain art. It just fits ones eye. At least it does for me and brings back great memories from when I learned the game.

I've never collected putters (or other clubs for that matter) as I've generally had a 1-in, 1-out policy. But since I've started making them I have a few different ones, 2 of which I've not even used on the course yet..

It's a little known fact that putters ability to make putts runs out at the end of each year. They then must be recharged for at least 7-years before their ability to make putts returns. All least that's what I tell my wife each time a buy a new putter!

Some people collect putters; others collect stamps, baseball cards, watches, hubcaps, hats, etc etc.

Like cnosil said - people collect things because they want to.

I understand it because we all collect a bunch of weird stuff in a way or keep old stuff that should be sold or thrown into the garbage. My main concern about collecting putter for me is like collecting ferrari, I wish I had the money to do it...

It always comes down to the means.  Ian Poulter collects Ferraris.  Literally.  Because it is within his means.
